With the winter season approaching people are looking for new destinations to realise their backcountry skiing dreams. Gulmarg in Kashmir has become famous for great runs through untracked terrain and skiing the Himalayas is something which should not be missed.

Unfortunately there are every year disturbing messages on safety for skiers in Gulmarg and I have already written extensively on the subject. Due to some unfortunate communication in the past weeks I wrote a blog putting things into perspective so people will not cancel their plans just because of some people's dramatizing of ordinary events that happen in other parts of the world too. After the massive floods in September Kashmir needs our support!

Interesting article. I agree with most of what you have written. People tend to take to much notice of what is said in the press about the dangers in mountain areas around the world. Yes there are risks and you need to be careful, but it does not need to stop you from going anywhere within reason. Syria right now might be a mistake.

I have skied and snowboarded in Kashmir on both the Indian and Pakistani side and the people were friendly and mostly really helpful. I have skied in Swat Valley, Gilgit Hindu Kush and loads of other places in this part of Northern Pakistan and never had any prolems. Even been in a few other places in China, Tibet and Nepal. All really great to get away from the normal ski crowds and find awesome powder.

I must come and see you guys in Gulmarg some time soon. Good luck for this winter.
