Hi
Travelling to La Plagne soon and I have found a great iPhone app called La Plagne.
Amongst other things it will tell you where you are on the mountain which for me would be useful as I have no sense of direction at all.
It says it uses GPS by using location services.
I am with 02 and worried if this will cost me lots as I don't normally have the internet on when in France other than when I have wifi.
Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Check your particular contract, of course, but O2 (and most other operators) have massively reduced their data roaming charges in recent years - so you should be good.

A lot will depend on how efficient the particular app is though; some download ludicrous volumes of data (either that or they're sending your life history to the NSA) so do keep an eye on it (your phone will let you track data use).

It won't cost you a penny. You only need gps switched on not data. Switch off wifi too as switched on it will keep looking for a signal using up battery power.
Most of these apps have an option to download a hi res piste map, do that via wifi before you go.
I'll be using the La Plagne one in March. Used the 3V one last year.

Thank you to you both. I have already downloaded the HD version so all set to go. The teenagers in our group are wanting to go ski off by themselves, they're better skiers than the adults so it will be great for them too.
Have a great Christmas.

Just to add that although most operators have indeed dropped their roaming charges O2 are rubbish. They charge £2 a day for 15mb.
15mb on an iPhone is pathetic, i get through that in about 10 mins.
I dumped O2 for this reason and now use Three where they charge £5 a day for unlimited data for Europe. But best of all in some countries they do not charge you at all, its the same as if you were at home. Those countries included Austria and Italy.

Heck that is surprising . I have always thought I was getting a reasonable deal with 02. Just shows you need to keep checking these things. Thanks for that,

Make sure if the app needs any maps you download bbefore you go or use wifi in the resort. Apart from that as per previous comments turn off data etc and GPS should still work, I use ski tracks and the same applies.
There's no business like snow business!
