Link Cortina - Alta Badia ?

Hi,

We are tempted to go to Dolomites this winter:)
Cortina d'Ampezzo is high on our list.
However as the local ski area is not very large we would like to know how good is the link to Alta Badia (Armentarola, San Cassiano).
Is it possible/practical to travel between the 2 areas without a car and return to Cortina at the end of the day's skiing?
Does it take very long?

We have just returned from a fabulous week in Cortina and Dolomites :)
It was our first trip to this mountain range and hopefully not last :wink:
It is easily achievable to ski from Cortina to Alta Badia and Sella Ronda resorts from Cortina.
It starts with a free ski bus ride from Cortina's bus station to the bottom of Cinque Torri ski lift. From there it is skiing all the way to Alta Badia taking the most beautiful scenery one can imagine including Hidden Valley run from the top of Lagazuoi. Additonal attraction is a horse drawn drag lift! Please help the horses on the last short but steepish incline before the end as it is 40+ skiers and sleigh and only 2 x HP :wink:
The return from Sella Ronda / Alta Badia is by Cortina Express bus from Corvara, La Villa or San Casssiano at the cost of 6 - 10 euros pp. The last bus leaves Corvara at 18:10.

Was going to say that to the best of my knowledge access to Cinque Torri from Cortina involves a bus or taxi-ride. Biki17 has 'trumped me' and told you which bus, and when and where to catch it! :) We managed it without any bother from relatively remote Campitello. I would say that unless you are adrenaline junkies Cinque Torri is an absolute must. Although the skiing is made up of easy reds and blues, the scenery is second to none. (and that's saying something in the Dolomites!) There may be more picturesque places to ski in the Alps, but I am yet to find them. Have a good one. :)

Sorry Biki17, saw your thread only now!!! Really pleased to read you found the way to get from Cortina to Armentarola/Alta Badia. The Hidden Valley run is truly beautiful, glad to hear you enjoyed it.

I can only agree with everyone who've been to the Dolomites. The scenery is fantastic. Have been going there for the past 6 years, at least twice a year, just can't keep away from the beauty of it :) Had to force myself to book Feb half-term to somewhere else on OH's demand :)I would happily spend all winter in Dolomiti Superski area.

We normally base ourselves in Arabba (or in Kronplatz area if want a quick access from Innsbruck), being there gives enough time to go around Sella Ronda, to Marmolada, Lagazuoi and Cinque Torri ,to Kronplatz, ski in the other resorts off Sella Ronda, Alta Badia, Pedraces, last time even skied all the way down to Ortisei, and to Cortina (getting a bus from Cinque Torri, the one Biki17 mentioned). Although getting back from Cortina was a little push, we did make it to the last lift up to Bec de Roces - would've been much less stressful if we hadn't had a nice = long lunch on the way back and waited for quite a while at the bottom of Hidden Valley for the horses to set off!!! Would've skied cross country but OH and a daughter weren't keen :), to be fair, it is a long stretch to langlauf on downhill skis, even I was happy to get a drag by the horses.

Love the Dolomites and would go back any time, even if there was not much snow around, the current conditions are of course a great bounus!!!

We would love to go back to Dolomites for our next ski trip and base ourselves in another resort/valley off Masif Sella for a change. This time we got to know Corvara, La Vila & San Cassiano areas fairly well in addition to Cortina and Hidden Valley of course.
Other valleys: Val Gardena, Arabba/Marmolada and Val di Fassa seemed lovely during our Sella Ronda tour.

don't go Cortina, but go to Corvara or Val Gardena !!
We (my wife and myself from Finland) were in Corvara. and I made this 23 km long 'circle journey' via Val Gardena, Campitello and Arabba and then back to Corvara.

Nice place - in every place a lot of skiing pistes/routes, and then extra this 23 km long circle , Nice italian citchen, apres ski may be not huge one (in Corvara), but - other things, Not bad!!
Cortina (we were there 3 days) was a little bit disapointment - skiing places - not so many ,and on different side of Cortina . Not connected to each others (only connected by ski bus driving through the town).

Do you some good italian places near to Geneve?
