we have been fortunate to have skied every year for the past 20 years and are looking for a different resort to try. We have skied most resorts in West Canada but as a family of 4 we can no longer afford 2 weeks in Canada each year so are looking for a European resort. Have been to Livigno, Sesterier, Alpe du Heuz and Chamonix. kids are 9 and 11yrs and can happily ski blacks so looking for somewhere with good advanced and off pieste skiing but have a limited budget, was thinking of trying some lesser known places does anyone have any recommendations? not fussed about nightlife but would like somewhere with a few shop and restaurants. Thanks

Thinking budget and European skiing your probable best bet would be to look at Italy. France, Switzerland, Austria etc. all fairly pricey. Take a good look at Champoluc/Gressoney/ Alagna in the Monterosa area. Very quiet nightlife, uncrowded (except weekends), reasonable prices and excellent modern lift system. Villages have adequate restaurants, pizzas etc. Have stayed at Hotel Castor in Champoluc, English/Italian husband wife duo. I believe Crystal and one or two other tour companies go there but we went via Easyjet/BA to Milan and then hired a car for the week-easy one hour and a bit journey.Try website www.monterosa-ski.com/en website. If you really want cheap go to Bulgaria but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. Oh, one other good source for ski information is 'Where to Ski' Guide www.wheretoskiandsnowboard.com.
