I guess the answer to "what's it like" depends a lot on what you/your group is like. Also, is it not dangerous to ask after you've already booked :!:

I went to Chamrousse 3 or 4 years ago, it was a 'boys' trip who normally seek 'high mileage and speed'. I must be honest it didn't satisfy that requirement. I was disappointed at the time, but on reflection it has some good points.

It was relatively devoid of large numbers of tour operators, more local French visitors, so lift queues were non existent. I think its one of the closest resorts to Grenoble, so good for city day trippers or quick transfers if you fly there.

If you're with beginners or a young family then it's probably ideally suited. You'll be able to get around the different villages and be comfortable getting back before the lifts close. Don't recall any mountain restaurants, but "Chamrousse 1600" or "1750" are never far away.

We were staying in "1700", which is fairly quiet, mainly self-catering but some of the apartments do a deal with pre-paid access to a central "buffet style" restaurant; otherwise there's a local s/market and couple of hire shops. Also an outside swimming pool. For more bars/restaurants/shops then we had a 10min walk (up the piste) to "1750". If I recall "1600" is main centre (but didn't go there other than skiing in & back out).

The restaurants at "1750" did get busy in the evenings (March) so I'd recommend booking tables.

You'll guess from the village names that it's not a high resort; the top's about 2200. Hopefully if long-range forecasts are true then you should be alright for Christmas.

Anything more specific then just ask!
"Cham...where" is often the comment I get when I mention it.

[edit: sorry, just noticed, hello "newbie" :) }

if I'm not skiing then I'm kayaking.

Carol, I have been to Chamrousse 3 times now.... Hardly any nightlife, but if you are lucky enough to get some powder days then some of the tree runs and off piste are epic !!
When it snows there, it really snows...
Lift queues are virtually non existent ( although w/ends are busier with locals from Grenoble)

I am going back 5/1/13
... fingers crossed for the powder !!
