Hi there, right then I was wondering if anyone could help me on this site. Me, hubby and two kids, been skiing twice before - Bulgaria and Neiderau - about three years ago - want to book Filzmoos now - looking at time we want to go its looking about £4000!!!! Could we do this independently and if so how much do you think we could save please. The time we would be going is either just after xmnas or Feb h/term and yes we do have to go these times. Thanks in advance for your help )

£4000 for 4 people to Filzmoos? Thats almost so ridiculous its funny, bearing in mind what a tiny tiny little place that is for skiing.
I've never looked but I'm sure it could be done for less with a tour op.

Any reason why you'd want to go to Filzmoos particularly?

If you've been to Niederau, did you like it, and why not go back as its usually the cheapest place for a package holiday with all the tour ops when you search.....there or Rauris anyway.

Have you considered other places?

Yep, very ridiculous and yes open to offers, really liked Neiderau but again its coming up at a couple of thouand and thought we would try somewhere else. That price is with a tour operator - it includes all ski passes, lifts, equipment etc but it seems be along that price wherever we look. Reason we looked here is because we have been told it is very family orientated - and good for beginners and intermediates.

Filzmoos is nice, but the village is very small. We went there as 2nd year beginners and therefore didn't explore all the pistes, just beginner areas - which aren't large. From my extensive reading of this forum  I think there are probably loads of resorts elsewhere that are more suitable for beginners and families, and might be cheaper too. Would you consider France or Italy? I understand Alpe d'Huez (Fr) and Cervinia (It) are both very good beginner resorts, although I haven't been there myself. Also, would you consider self-catering? French resorts have lots of self-catering apartments - but bear in mind the UK half term hols will overlap with the French ones to some extent.

I'm not sure DIY holidays can compete with tour ops' prices, unless you are prepared to drive down and do self-catering. There is a whole other thread somewhere on this forum discussing DIY options, with mixed opinions about prices.

Thanks for your replies, not sure if we fancy France because as you say could be very very busy over the half term period. Italy we have thought of but really like the idea of Austria as its very pretty - even though hubby just wants to 'ski' I like the places to be 'chocolate box'. Thanks anyway will try the tour ops again and see whether I can get a cheaper price.

we did a DIY there - stayed at the Hotel Unterhof which was 5* but probably a bit too posh if that makes any sense, couldn't really relax and very few English (for our kids). happy Filzmoos and Hotel Hanneshof are lovely - the major cost for us was the flights to Salzburg.
