Hi Guys,

I'm going over to the US in January to visit for 3 weeks. At the end of the 3 weeks I plan to stay for another and go skiing.

Being from the UK I have no idea which american ski companies I should be booking with... if I google ski holiday I get loads of companies offering ski holidays from the UK to the US, when all I want to do is book an 'internal' America holiday.

If someone could suggest a couple of good websites that would be great!

There are no tour operators in the US. Most ski area accommodation will include lift passes, but do check. You will have to figure out how to get there.

Where will you be in the US?
because I'm so inclined .....

Okay. So you simply book accommodation (with/without ski passes) and then it's up to you to get to the resort. I guess the buses and trains are really good at getting people too and from the snow.

I'm going to be in Boston, but currently I have no idea where I'd like to ski.

Thanks for your reply!

Killington, as Tony says, is the obvious one as its a reasonable size and only about 1.5 hours from Boston.

I went there a few years ago and really enjoyed a lot of it:
Lots of variety - easy through to some serious double black diamonds
No queues at lifts - ever that we saw
Good grooming, lift capacity etc
Pico is worth a visit too off same pass

Downsides:
It's New England so the weather can do anything at any time (the images you have in mind of powder and blue skies all day in Colorado may happen but it's a lottery)
No real "village" so you'll likely have to hike/drive/bus to bars/restaurants depending on your accomodation

Now all that was 3 or 4 years ago so some of the minuses may be less so now - overall I'd go back for a good deal etc but I want to try some more of Colorado/Utah first

There are several US based peeps on here who will give you better advice on resorts in the West if you don't mind flying from Boston out there

I visited Killington when I was in Boston a couple of years ago, but in the summer, so I can't comment on the skiing.
I found a good site to find B&Bs here: http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/killington-vermont.html
and we stayed in the Red Clover Inn http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/vermont-mendon-theredcloverinnandrestaurant.html
Nice place, excellent food.
If you are not used to the USA a B&B is more like a luxury chalet or private hotel.
For more modest accommodation try: http://www.redroof.com/
Everyone I talked to said they drove there. Lots of people go for weekends so you might get a lift that way.
Pack your thermals...

Decision time

I guess you need to decide on whether you want to ski somewhere "close" to Boston, or take advantage of already being stateside and go for somewhere you really want to try.

As already stated, Killington is only a few hours drive from Boston, and like the others who have been I can add that it is OK, but if I went back I would want to stay up by the main lodge and lifts. I was there in 1998, and we had a 2 mile drive each day into the lifts. As a result, we didn't really leave the hotel in the evening, so missed out on the town.

Not sure if somewhere like Tremblant would be drivable from Boston, otherwise the internal flights in the US always used to be pretty cheap, so you could take your pi9ck from Colorado or Utah etc.

Most resorts will have a website loaded with accommodation, and it is pretty straight forward to book it all online.

Your right it certainly is decision time. Having Killington on the East coast certainly is a bonus, but you're quite right maybe I should take advantage of being stateside.

The thought of having to travel up and down from the village/shops/bars is certainly off putting - especially because I'll be skiing alone, so I'll want to go out and have a few drinks in the evening to meet people.
