Is there a good european breakdown/recovery policy for cars that you could recommend (or avoid) from personal experience? Thanks in advance.

Had the issue of my Gear box blowing up just outside Geneva a couple of years back, I have always used AXA for my euro breakdown Insurance and till then never had to make a claim.
I can honestly say they were superb Facilitating a conference call between myself and the french police which is the first port of call if you breakdown on the autoroute which is a private road, arranging for the car to be towed and repatriated back to the UK ( That took two weeks),
Arranged for a hotel, paid for taxis to and from the hotel to Geneva airport, easy jet flights from Geneva to nearest airport which was Stansted the next day and paid all excess luggage costs, and they also hired a car for us at Stansted to get us back to Norwich.
There was a lot of hanging around during the day and they phoned us every hour to make sure we were ok keeping us in the loop with all the arrangements for repatriation back to the Uk. All for the sum of £27 for 10 days cover.
