2022 London Ski & Snowboard Festival Tickets On Sale

The London Ski & Snowboard Festival is back in October after a three year break following the withdrawal of previous organisers The Telegraph, quickly followed by the pandemic.
New organisers, Smart Group, say their new four-day festival from October 27th to 30th will bring together global resorts, top fashion retailers, the latest technology, Team GB athletes and plenty of entertainment for Winter sports fans and families of all ages and experience levels.

Vail Resorts Take Over Andermatt Ski Area in Switzerland

Vail Resorts, the world's largest ski resort operator, has bought a majority share in the company that operates Andermatt ski area in Switzerland.
Andermatt has been transformed over the past decade with an investment of over 1 Billion Swiss Francs by a group led by an Egyptian billionaire, Samih Sawiris, building property and totally overhauling the ski area with fast new lifts.

New Thunder Quad at Jackson Hole To Cut Ascent Time in Half

Jackson Hole is into the final fortnight of its 21-22 season and has announced next season will start with a new Thunder lift in place.
The original lift installed 28 years ago in 1994 will be replaced by a newer, swifter capable of carrying more guests uphill.

Scottish Ski Centres Suffer In Warm Weather

The hot March weather that ended winter and started spring has had an impact on snow cover at the five Scottish ski centres.
The 21-22 season had only really got started a month ago after dry and warm weather from mid-December to mid-February prevented a snow base from building, however by early March most of the centres were able to open most of their runs.

Magic Pass confirms prices for 2022/23 winter season

The 'Magic Pass' - a single pass that covers skiing in resorts all over Switzerland - have confirmed their prices for the 2022/23 winter – the sixth season that the pass will have been available.
The pass has been a great success, with 141,000 subscriptions sold for the 2021/22 season – an increase of 27.6% - and over 1.5 million skier days.

Vail Resorts Announce Nearly Half Billion Dollar Spend On 22-23 Upgrades

Vail Resorts which has now expanded its portfolio of ski areas to 40 centres in Australia, Canada and the USA has announced nearly half-a-billion dollars of investment in upgrades for next season.
About a third of the money is being invested in the company's workforce with a big focus on career progression opportunities as well as the introduction of an across-the-company minimum pay rate of $20 an hour.

New Bozel to Courchevel Gondola gets approval

After many years under discussion, it looks like the proposed lift from Bozel to Courchevel will happen at last.
The local authorities have put out the construction of a new gondola, that will start in the valley town of Bozel and take skiers - and workers - to Courchevel 1550.

Scandinavian Ski Resorts Report Record Business Despite Ongoing Pandemic

The SkiStar group which runs a number of Scandinavia's biggest ski resorts says it has broken its previous visitor and sales reports with its best half-year result ever.
Net sales for the period from September to February inclusive increased by 64 percent compared with the previous (pandemic) year. Profits were up 106 percent, compared with the previous year.

Orange Skies & Snow in the Alps

Skies and snow have turned an orange-brown shade across a large swathe of the Alps over the past 48 hours.
The unusual hue to the daylight and the snow was caused by dust particles blown north from the Sahara desert in Africa.
It's an unusual occurrence but not unheard of, seeming to happen at least once every ski season or two.

Swiss Jungfrau Ski Region Extends Season To May 1st

The Jungfrau ski region which incorporates the skiing in spectacular scenery above the resorts of Grindelwald, Murren and Wengen has announced it is extending its season to May 1st.
It has joined a growing number of ski areas worldwide saying they intend to stay open in to May including Breckenridge and Vail in Colorado, Ischgl in Austria and Niseko in Japan. For some of these it gives skiers and boarders a longer season to get back on the slopes as pandemic restrictions continue to ease.

Cervinia Announces 2022 Summer Ski Season

Cervinia says it will open for summer skiing for the weekend of June 25-26 and then daily from the following weekend for just over two months from July 2 to September 4 this year.
Also open from early Autumn through to May, it claims to be open around 10 months of the year, placing it in the world top 20 for length of season. Cervinia offers summer access to the year-round ski slopes of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise above Zermatt.

“Very Aggressive Moose” Forces Closure of Elk Trail at Colorado Resort

A ski run at up-market Beaver Creek resort in Colorado has had to be closed to skiers due to the antics of a moose.
A sign at the base of the lift accessing the trail warns that the run is closed, stating,
"Due to very aggressive moose on the run-out, Royal Oak is closed, they have become very dangerous."

Steamboat Ski Area $90m Spend Will See Terrain Expansion And New Gondola

Colorado's Steamboat ski area is to see the installation of North America fastest 10-person gondola which will and also the addition of 650 acres of advanced terrain to give it the second-largest ski area in Colorado by winter 23-24.
The upgrades are part of a multi-year $90m spend by owners the Alterra group, which also includes phase two of Steamboat's Full Steam Ahead redevelopment completed.

Flights from London to Colorado Increase as Resorts Extend Seasons

United Airlines have resumed daily flights from London to Denver this week and have announced plans to add a second daily service later this month as resorts in Colorado announce extended seasons.
United first launched summer seasonal flights between London Heathrow and Denver International Airport in March 2018 and the service was expanded to operate year-round in March 2019. It was suspended a year later as a result of the pandemic but just resumed after two years, the first flight taking place on 5th March.

The Ski Podcast offers to become new sponsor of the ‘Emirates Air Line’ gondola

After being disappointed to read that Transport for London have failed to find a new sponsor for the 'Emirates Air Line' gondola in London, 'The Ski Podcast' has offered to step in.
Iain Martin, presenter of The Ski Podcast said:
"Like most skiers, I was very excited when the gondola linking the O2 and Excel centre in Docklands opened in 2012. I rushed to queue up for the chance to pretend I was in the mountains again."

France To Ease Some Pandemic Rules

France is the latest of the big four Alpine ski nations to announce it is easing pandemic operating restrictions.
The country is suspending the need to present a Covid-19 vaccine pass – proving vaccination or recovery from the virus - from March 14th.

Snowbird To Operate First Tram with Balcony in North America

Snowbird ski area in Utah has announced that its iconic tram (cable car) will have all new cabins for winter 22-23.
Both the resort and the tram have turned 50 this season and the centre's operators have decided that after travelling 794,994 miles (or the equivalent of travelling to the moon and back over one and a half times) its time for the original cabins to retire.
