Spectacular Snow in Scotland
Published : 31-Jan-2014 07:18
(Glenshee yesterday)
Although you might not know it if you're down in Aviemore or Fort William in the valleys, the snow on Scottish ski slopes above is nearly ten feet deep after five to six weeks of near constant snowfalls.
The warm and wet weather that has affected much of Britain has quite simply been dumping snow on Scottish mountain tops (Norwegian areas have done well from the same systems), and now at least one resort, Glencoe, reports the snow as deep as it was in the last 'mega winter' of 2009-10.

Too Much Snow at Sochi?
Published : 30-Jan-2014 10:15
Along with possible terror attacks, potential earthquakes, criticism of excessive spending and any issues arising from anti-gay laws, the Sochi Olympics faced a possible practical problem of too little snow – an issue which affected some venues at the the Vancouver Games four years ago, particularly Cypress Mountain, leading to last minute helicoptering in along with truck convoys of the white stuff from higher altitudes and spectators being limited at the venue.

Heavy snow has been falling on North Western North America over the past 72 hours – good news for the normally snowy region which had had a below average start to the season in some areas.
The Pacific coast had had snow well below average, just as four years ago ahead of the Vancouver Olympics, and in some places it was worse, particularly on Vancouver Island where Mount Washington, an official training base for the 2010 Games and with a deep snow reputation, has had to postpone opening for around a month, until today. 65cm of fresh snow in the past 24 hours has transformed conditions there for the better.

Big Snowfalls in (Some Of) The Alps
Published : 06-Jan-2014 08:51
There have been healthy snowfalls over the weekend in the Western and southern Alps and the Dolomites, further improving conditions.
However the snow, which has been most marked on higher altitude slopes, largely bypassed much of Austria and the north eastern Alps over the weekend, leaving some ski areas in the region almost totally reliant on machine made snow leaving white ribbons on green mountain sides. That does however seem to be changing to some extent at present with some fresh snow in parts of the country.
