Hlíðarfjall, Iceland (500m to 980m)

Northern Iceland's premier ski destination can be difficuilt to drive to so take an internal flight from Reykjavik. Lifts generally don't open until 13:00 on weekdays, but do remain open until 19:00. At weekends the lifts are open from 10:00 until 17:00. The local Ski Lodge has sleeping bag accommodation but there is more comfortable accommodation in Akureyri, 7km (5 miles) away.
