Close to the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, which bid for the 1994 Winter Olympics. A gondola whisks skiers from the city limits to Aleko (1810m). In good snow conditions an off-piste descent of 1295 vertical metres is possible. Great views from the slopes to the city.

The ski resort itself is above 1500m, so skiing or boarding back to the resort is usually possible. With skiing above 2000 metres, snow cover is generally reliable.

There are two airports within two hours drive, so ski weekends, snowboard breaks and short ski holidays to Vitosha are perfectly feasible. Sofia Airport is just one hours drive away, in good driving conditions, so you can be on the piste quickly.
