Briancon is a historic fortified town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It sits at 1200m, making it one of the highest towns in France.The renowned military tactician and architect Vauban had a vision for Briancon to monopolise on its strategic position at the intersection of five valleys and was responsible for building the magnificent forts on the high vantage points overlooking the town. It has always been an important staging and military post throughout its history and when in 1989, the Prorel cable car was built which links Briancon to the ski areas of Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Montier, it became part of the ever-growing Serre Chevalier ski resort. Today, it has a population of 13,000 and still commands a strong strategic position with its proximity to Italy and to the South.It is very unusual to have a living, working town that is also part of a major ski resort which makes the Schappe such an exciting and unique development.

The Schappe is an incredible renovation project on a grand scale. For ninety years, from 1842 1932, the building was a working silk mill and has a remarkable history which will be portrayed in the museum which forms part of the renovation plans. The plans for this project have been drawn up by an Italian architect who studied the Schappe as part of his university course and he is now able to realise his years of hard work and effort.
