2006 Olympics awaits environment certification

An interesting article on Sustain Online, 2006 Olympics awaits renewal of EU environment certification, describes the measures being taken to assess and reduce the environmental impact of the developments necessary for the Winter Olympics to take place.

The Turin Winter Olympics 2006 will be the first time that such a major sporting event as the Olympics has used EMAS (the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme).
The Turin Organising Committee (TOROC) was given the green light for EMAS in September 2004 and is currently looking to renew its certification as part of EMAS’s three-year cycle.
The International Olympic Committee recognises the environment as the third component of Olympism.

But it’s not all roses according to the WWF;

Rather than using the ski-jumps close by in Albertville, they chose to build five new ones in Pragelato, leading to a shift in the bed of the river Chisone. In the upper Val di Susa, they have built a permanent bobsleigh piste rather than a temporary one that could be taken down after the event, as suggested by environmentalists.
