Serre Chevalier - 6th March 2010

Well, seeing as it is now less than 28 days until we go to SC I thought I would start a thread.

Me and OH are very excited about this trip and especially as we both feel that we developed a lot in ADH in Jan that this should be an even better holiday.
We are hopeful that conditions will continue to be as good as they are currently being reported and that we get to have a fantastic time on the slopes again.

I dont pick the resorts.
I leave it down to my trusted ski buddy Tony H.
However, I did have a look around the piste map and also resort reviews on several ski themed website and the skiing comments were superb. I have never been there before but we are going twice this year, the 2nd time being over Easter Weekend.
So it had better be good.

It was selected because me and Mrs H went in March 2009 and found the skiing to be just superb, but our hotel was rubbish, so we wanted to take friends back and stop in a chalet this time.
Stewart was keen on going, and decided that becuase of the massive variety in terrain, there would be sufficient for him and his OH to go at.

Well I like hotels in certain places, eg Mayrhofen and much of Austria, and some chalets are clearly not too great, but if you get a nice chalet in a great ski in/out spot, I dont think you can have a better time.
I dont want to cook, and eating out can now cost a fair bit, and its fun in a group to have a place, and i also enjoy meeting new people and sharing experiences.
We did our first chalet last Jan in St Anton, and will continue to do it again every year now I think, although I wont rule out hotels, for example in Ischgl where I want to go.

Boring, loud people who like nothing better then listening to their own voices ....... come on you must of come across a few on your chalet holidays 8)

Over the last year I have done Hotel H/board, 2 s/c villas and a s/c/log cabin. For me now it will always be s/c appartment/cabin/villa. Have never tried chalet but I think it would be my worst nightmare. I prefer privacy and do my own thing, eat when I want, sleep when I want, get up when I want, wander around in whatever I choose, yes even break wind when I want :oops:, hence why unless I knew every-one in the chalet I could not do it.

This is the bit I dont get. You dont need to pretend to be someone you are not just because you are sharing a home for a week with some people you might not know. The last 1 I stayed in had a hot tub and a sauna, so you end up walking around in a dressing gown or a pair of shorts anyway. I farted many a time around the living area.....!
Each to their own though I guess. I cant think of anything worse than having to cook my own food after a days skiing though.

Anyway, lets get back on thread.
Anyone whos been to Serre Che recently got anything to tell Stewart about the place? Bear in mind he has a fear of heights and something of a lift phobia....

Not once Ian, not yet anyway. In fact I have made some good friends meeting in chalets, including a lovely family in Verbier who we have met up with several times since, and a decent guy and his Dad last month in ADH.

I went to Serre Chevalier last year (January), and thought it was great!

I stayed at Chantemerle in a s/c apartment and hired a ski locker next to the lift. We had SO much snow that on a couple of days not much skiing got done, as the blizzard made it impossible to move, and lots of the chair lifts shut down.

Fantastic black run down to Chantemerle though (Luc Alphand). It's a 6km Olympic run with 1000m drop over the run! Superb, although for those not so brave or with tired legs, there's a gentle green run through the forest, with lovely scenery!

I did that black, its a good one for sure.
We are stopping in Villeneuve.

Not sure about up the mountain (although I will try and remember the bar which had the enormous roaring log burning stove), but I went to a spectacular restaurant very near Chantemerle, called Le Loup Blanc. As far as food goes, this was superb! I've eaten in many French restaurants, and this one sticks out in my memory.

Don't think there's an English translation, but try the Tartiflette from the speciality menu!

According to the text, it's at the foot of the Luc Alphand piste. (I can translate if you like, my french is good!)

Just as I was about to start a new tread on serre che I saw this...Me and 10 other oldies 45-63 are going on 20th Feb. All are "intermediates" ...whatever that is... so it would be great if you could tell us the good bits to do both in terms of skiing and eating. We are 4 girlies and 7 blokes total age well in excess of 500 years. :D. look out Serre Che!!! (well until ten at night at least)

Hi folks,
I am heading out to Serre Che on 13th March with two mates. We are staying in an apartment in Villeneuve for a week. I wonder if any decent snowboarders or skiers will be in the area that week. Without sounding like a bighead, my ability is rather more advanced than my mates and I'm looking for some folks to hook up with to explore the whole Serre Che area ( my mates are less adventurous and will confine themselves to the Villeneuve slopes)
So if any one will be out there anytime from 13th to 20th March maybe we could hook up. My name is James, I'm Scottish, I'm snowboarding but am very happy tagging along with skiers as well.
We are flying in to Turin from Glasgow(Prestwick) and hiring a car to get to Serre Che, so if anyone needs a lift there is a spare seat. we will be leaving Turin airport approx 18:00 on the 13th.

My serre chevalier summary:

for the more adventurous freestyle types: melezone has
lots of bumps and grinds in the trees too which is awesome. Jam park up the top is split in 2 for beginners and advanced.

Fast downhill types: some nice blacks around the middle of the map. Casse de boeuf was a particular fav of mine.

Some nice bumps near the top right of the map if you like moguls. That could have changed since last year though?

The leisurely skier: mixed ability runs all over the mountain.

The explorer: you're in heaven

The apres skier: not an awful lot of night life, but la grotte du yeti is a pretty cool bar and gets busy at night. Plus, happy hour whenever it snows!!

Indeed it is, heavily yesterday in fact.
If it is snowing, head to LaGrotte at the bottom of the Aravet lift - special deal on beers whilst the snow falls. I imagine many people will have spent much of this week in that bar.... :shock:

Thanks for that...I don't drink any more.......or any less for that matter and anyway only plan to have a bevy or two on days with a "d" in them. La Grot is meant to be quite lively with dancing on the tables I have heard....wonder if they have ladders to get us oldies up there? :lol:

Baldy, no ladders but they have Stena Stair Lifts and Adult Potties for all you old folk who indulge in one too many beers.

Fine snow in the valley at 1350m, and heavy up the top. Its not warm enough for rain, just look at the webcam by the stream down at the bottom.

Well, we are now entering the final countdown.
Days to go is now in single figures.
Michael Fish has predicted that there will be several CM's of snow between now and next week.
The skis edges are looking sharp.
The clothes are clean and ready to be packed into the suitcase.
Hand Luggage prepared in the event of "Force Majure" or in the TO opinions that includes idiots not loading the plane of the damn frogs being on Strike.

All we need to do now is get some currency, pick up my new helmet, get the OH a new jacket and pray that the next 8days fly by.

Where are you getting your OH a new jacket from?? I looked everywhere last week and most shops seem to have removed their ski stock! Think I might buy a new one whilst I'm out in France.

As you may be aware, I had to buy new 'everything' when I went to France over the new year so I am able to tell you now that buying in France is NOT a good idea. It is sooooooooo expensive! If you are minted then ignore this message but if you are not then you would be better off buying a jacket before you go.

Agreed Bandit. I had to buy new sallos in ADH, and paid 105 euros for some Quiksilver ones which I didnt think was bad, until I found they are GBP85 in Ellis Brigham :evil:

Gadget Girl, I would suggest either Ellis Brigham, Blacks or Cotswolds.

My OH wants a Blue Animal Jacket which were seen in Black and Cotswolds a few weeks ago so we are hoping they are still there.

If not and she cant find anything I will have some new sallos instead :lol:

I have a quicksilver jacket at the moment, which I've had for years (Xtra small mens one, hence was very cheap in the sale!), but even after washing it, it's looking really shabby and worn, so thought I'd get a new one.

There's a Blacks in Oxford, but their range was very poor when I went a couple of weeks ago. Will see where my nearest Cotswold is.

Definitely not minted!! I just remember seeing some great value jackets last year in Serre Che.

the sale prices in blacks yesterday at Brent Cross were unbelieveable.

I am off to Gatwick now, chill out this afternoon, nice hotel for the night, dinner in Horsham, and a leisurely check in in the morning. Nice.

The snow in SC looks amazing, with more forecast next week to top it up each night. Perfect.

It never ceases to amaze me how much MORE excited I feel each time I go. I find packing my ski bag very thrilling!!!!! Odd.

My mate Steve, who is coming with us, is like a small child, so much looking forward to the trip. Its going to be a good one.

Those who are going out this weekend, particularly Freezy and Wickers, have a great trip and safe flights.
Don't forget to wave towards us in southern France at 10am on Monday.

Just back last night, ridiculously good snow. Perfect travel arrangements, all bags arrived as they should, decent chalet in brilliant position. Superb skiing, bright sunshine most days, fresh dump start of week.....more later with some photos.
