Holiday time is upon us

I am up early this morning and just completed a quick calculation that it is only 54 days to my summer holiday, only 54 days, thats not long is it ???

Rose, You'll love it there and the Greek way of life etc. Lovely scenery, tiny little coves and beaches, not a cloud in the sky....

I am off to Santorini June 11th, although that hasnt worked out good timing as it happens, as I have been forced to find another job recently, due to my company being in financial trouble, and they finally went into administration on Friday afternoon, so I am actually not going to get paid the month I have just worked. Atleast I have something up my sleeve to get on with though.

Today is a gorgeous day here. Bright sun, 20c already at 10.30am, its going to be a good one, so make the most of it as tomorrows forecast is dreadful!

that's why i'm making the most of the bank holiday weekend, hic! i know it's early but the weather is so nice it seems rude not to wash lunch down with a glass or two of nicely chilled rose 8) :oops:

Tony, I hope you enjoy your holiday in Santorini, there is never a good time for bad news like this. I think it's disgraceful that you are not being paid for the month you have just worked :thumbdown:

We have just had some good news for a change as we shall be moving permanently to East Anglia at the beginning of June - worryingly close to Norwich, but we will cope somehow!

Sorry to hear that Tony. That seems to be the way of it, with recessions. You are either hardly impacted, or totally screwed. It's a time when luck plays a huge part in events.

I was in a similar situation many years ago. I was working as a photographer for a very strange manufacturing company. They owed me for a lot of overtime and holidays. They had sold just about all the equipment in the factory to a finance company and then leased it back. Be for I left, I was able to find a copy of the lease agreement and see that a Hasselblad camera and lenses had been missed from the lease back contract. As I had at some point been given permission to use the equipment at home, I held on to the Hasselblad. It got pretty heavy on the legal front, but in the end, they gave up. That camera was sold for a deposit on my first house. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Guys, thanks for the support, but I dont want to turn this into a sympathy vote all the same. I have been pondering over whether to still go on holiday or not next month, but seeing as we would lose 100% if we cancelled, it seems silly not to. I have something in hand, so things will work out, but its just a real kick in the watsits to work a month and then find they pull the plug the day before doing the salary run on BACS. If they had done it the day after salary was paid, it would be easier to swallow. Hey ho.

Dave - now is not the right time in the current climate I am afraid. Ad sales are rock bottom so I need things to pick up. Also, I need a regular wage coming in first. It is however still a distinct reality when things change.

Trencher - I have a few things in mind pal )

Jastem - The ADH piste map will definitely be used, as the trip is already booked and partly paid for, and I had some money in an account with a tour operator for the potential Schladming trip, so hopefully I will get to use them both. Thanks again for your kindness.

Bandit - TH will be back with a bang, dont you worry 8)

Off to Lefkas, having my first ever Summer holiday abroad. Makes a nice change from camping in Cornwall.

That's brill Rose. Bit unusual to be a first summer abroad. Have you been committed to the UK, or have you just never fancied going abroad for a summer hol?

Like you, winter is our main focus for going away. But over the last two years, when the guide dogs have had to visit the GD centre at Forfar, to be "done", we have whizzed over to Austria. Austrian lake district, Niederau, hill walking.

Our current GD is away on Friday for two weeks, but cannot interest my OH in going to N. To be fair, she has been five times in two years!

This is made worse because friends in our village are going to Niederau for a week, staying at the Auhof. The following week, an old Manchester folksinger friend is also going, and taking his banjo.

I am bereft!

To be honest Dave with a fear of flying, plus lack of funds and a Son who wanted to play every tennis tournament around the opportunity never arose. But whilst I still dont claim to love flying I am happier to do it now. Plus Son caters for himself now and the funds are abit better. Given the choice of holidays our winter ones are still our priority, but this one is to celebrate 10 years to the day that Hubby and I met. We are still hoping to do a Niederau walking holiday in September.

Everyone I have spoken to who has been to Santorini has told me its the most beautiful place, stunning, gorgeous, etc etc. I have never heard anyone yet refer to it as "quite nice" but I guess that may have something to do with your age? I am aware its different to most places I have been to, mainly because of the geology of the place, but the sheer beauty and drama of the scenery attracts. We love the Greek way of life, the food, and the hot sun, so it will be perfect hopefully.

We are in Perissa which along with Kamari are the only resorts with beaches and sand as I like to sit near the sea and swim too. We go to relax, chill, sit in the sun, swim a bit, have a few drinks in a local bar, enjoy good traditional food and maybe meet and chat to like minded people. If you want loud music and clubs, I would heads to Malia, Ayia Napa, Laganas, Faliraki....etc. Not for me, though. I am hoping Santorini will be as enjoyable as Rhodes was, having been there twice in the past 2 years. We much prefered it to Kos and Zante.

Lefkas is a greatr choice for Rose, I am sure she will enjoy it. Its on my list of places to go, along with Kefalonia which I know she was also considering. I personally dont think you can go far wrong with the Greek Islands, as long as you avoid the usual "young and lively" spots.

Hope everyone has a great summer. I am not going to be on here much for a while. The recent job situation has been hard to deal with, and I have been rushed off my feet looking for a new job, and now that I have one, trying to win back my former clients. Its going to be a long hot summer for me, as I need to getmy head down and get stuck in to the new job. I guess I have to be thankful I have one bearing in mind whats happened, and what state print is in....

See you all back in the colder months ahead, once the white stuff starts falling again!!!

Speak for yourself! I think about skiing all year round. However, its easier to think about other things AS WELL during the summer. It certainly helps focus the mind on skiing when there is snow falling across the Channel.

I am one of those people who doesnt like the mountains for holidays other than skiing when there is snow on them. I know a lot of skiers tend to go on walking, biking or even relaxing holidays up in the mountains. However, the summer months for me mean a chance to soak up some hot sun on a gorgeous beach somewhere gazing out to sea in peace and quiet. Its back to the mountains once it gets cold.

I agree with Tony_H, not esp interested in the mountains as a summer hol.

Just come back from the Scilly Islands with the kids for half term, it was absolutely magical and am recommending it to anyone who will listen.

Have gone a bit bonkers (or rather Mrs T has) sorting out future holidays: got Italy in the summer, skiing at Christmas, and even Easter next year sorted.

Have a good summer everyone, and offer silent (or even vocal) prayers to whatever you believe in for a season like last year.

Thats a shame really because the mountains are as beautiful in the summer as they are in the winter, I have done the Greek islands,Italy, Spain, but for my family we have found a wonderful balance a week on the coast and a week in the mountains...but the world would be a boring place if we were all the same, enjoy your summer hols where ever you go. 8) 8)

I'm with Wickers, the mountains are beautiful in summer. It's possible to combine skiing and summer sports if you wish. Depending on your choice of destination, villages can be busy with events. Everyone should try this once before they head back to the beach.. 8)

Tino you really do need to start doing the snow dance as there is a distinct lack of it over here. :x

However I have been speaking to the locals and they all say the same that the snow is arriving later and later each year but the season is lasting a bit longer into September. They seem confident..... It is forecast snow/rain for tomorrow so watch this space :shock:

Cheers Brimster, I have read that Portillo is always amoungst the last resorts in South America to recieve snow, however it tends to dump in 7 or 8 big storms during the winter when the moist air rolls in off the ocean and hits the cold air of the high Andes. Would be a crying shame to go that distance and not be able to ride :(

Just back from Lefkas to-day had a fabulous time. Actually tried to stay on for another week at another villa but they could not re-arrange our flights. The villa was to die for, in quarter of an acre garden totally fenced off with electric gates and a huge pool. We picked oranges, lemons, limes olives,apricots and pomegranites fresh off the trees in the garden every day. Managed to tour about three quarters of the Island around the coastline, found the most wonderful places. The greek driving is the worst I have ever encountered.
Could not get over how cheap Greece is for eating out and drinks. I suppose our best value was a 10hour cruise on a boat that normally has 500 passengers but there were only 50 that day. We stopped for swimming off the boat at 3 of the best beaches, spent two hours for lunch in Kefalonia, two hours for shopping in Ithaca, saw the caves at Melagnissi, and went all around Scorpios the Onnassis Island and swam off the beach there. All for the grand total of 20 euros each it was fantastic.

Sounds fantastic Rose, just let my imagination run with your story and I could have almost been there!! shame about the flights though. Was meant to be going to a wedding in Cyprus next weekend but couldn't get flights for less than 700 nicker :(

We are still gutted that we did,nt book two weeks, but never having done that sort of holiday before we were not too sure how I would get on with the food and the heat, but I loved it. But I think definately Kefalonia next year, from what bit we saw it was gorgeous. Flew over the mountains to-day not sure if it was Italy or France but still plenty of snow on the tops.

Hence, totally unplanned, we are off to Minorca on Thursday. I have never been before, but I did like the other Balierac islands, and it is beautiful light for painting.

The lady of my life likes to get on a sunbed with a book. I cannot abide more than ten minutes of this slothfullness, so usually sea swim for 3 or 4 hours, then go and look for something ancient to paint.

Don't go there, I have cracked that joke before, and she says the punch line is thinner than the bases on my K2s. :lol:

We saw one on the harbour front at Nidri and the locals were trying to catch it or kill it, they aid it was a poisonous one, but that it was the first time they had seen one in seven years. It was horrible actually rearing its head up on one of the boats.

Had they had a prolonged hot spell ?, it is very rare to see one although if you are lucky enough to see a snake it seems that May/June is the time that they can be spotted in Greece, reading up a little it seems the Greeks do have a fear of snakes and go out of there way to kill them, which is a bit of a shame they do get a fair bit of bad press...... 8)

I am so pleased you liked it, especially after the advice I gsave you re Greece and its islands. Yes, its cheap to eat out GENERALLY, but specifically in the more off the beaten track kind of places. That cruise was fantastic value for money.

I shall expect all the info on Santorini Tony when you get back. I have the bug now and want to visit more Islands now. I would def go back to Lefkas but not stay on that side of the Island the other side was the best. The holiday would not have been enjoyable without a car, we were a bit remote. There are some fantastic places but my god there is some poverty there. We went for a walk right to the end of the lane we were staying in and could not believe our eyes. Imagine a four storey block with the side taken off. There were familys living in them, no windows, walls, doors with kettle drums burning a fire to cook on. Parts of Lefkada town were like that as well. I know it was destroyed in the earthquakes but 50 years on still not the money to re-build.
We travelled with Style holidays which are part of Thomas Cook and the reviews I had read and the things people on here told me about, well we could not fault them. It was the smoothest most hastle free holiday ever. Yes the leg room in the planes is not great, but for a three hour trip no bother. Even the inflight meals both ways were good, the stewardesses great. Plane actually left early. Quick check in, in flight entertainment, hire car ready outside airport and we had a free upgrade to a bigger car. The rep visits you at a convenient time at your villa to check you are okay, give you maps and all the info on the best places to go etc. The duty free at Preveza airport was the cheapest ever, indulged quite a bit, have become hooked on OOzo and metaxa.
Sounds sad I know but this weekend is Hubbys birthday and a lot of his family and friends love Greece/Cyprus so we are having a greek night. We are currently building a pergola with a bar in the garden and Hubby will re-create all the greek delicacies we ate over there. Will even do the garden furniture with check cloths, not forgetting the paper tableclothes and clips. Just going out to buy grape vines etc. Wonder where I can get lizards :lol:

Bandit, I'm a dab hand with a paint roller, (half the time than a brush, and better finish), also, plumbing, electrics, roof tiling, joinery, brickwork. What's more, I enjoy the creativeness of it all. So would love to help out.

Only one prob. After last winter, my Brownie point sack lies at it's lowest level of the year. This will have to be re-built gradually, throughout the remainder of the year, mostly using the aforesaid capabilities. The sack overflowed last yeare to nursing the OH through the broken leg, along with traing of two guide dogs.

On the bright side, have just returned from Menorca, having topped up the winter tan, knocked off another couple of seascapes, swum a couple of miles a day, and polished off a respectable quantity of alchohol.

A Swedish couple had arranged to buy one of the paintings, all proceeds to the GDA. We had arranged to meet them, on their last day, but were delayed, and missed them. Bit disapointing, but there is a plan....

Menorca ~ nice and quiet, but 15 Euros/day should you want 2 sunbeds and a brolly. That's why I sat under a tree for six hours, painting the view.

Hi Guys

Just back from Santorini, quite a beautiful place, although it was very quiet. People we spoke to who live and work over there say trade is down 50% on last year, and many businesses have not opened for this season as they cannot afford to. The recession has hit hard where places rely on the tourist trade it seems.
Over on the east side of the island, I was paying as little as 2,50 euros for a pint. However, in Fira or Oia you can expect to pay upwards of 10 euros in many places.

We drove over to Imerovigli to watch the famous sunset, and found a well priced and superbly situated restaurant from where to see it. I have prepared a small selection of photos, and have tried to be creative with them too, not that I am much of a photographer with a small Kodak digital camera!

The weather was superb, not at all like it has been in mainland Greece, Corfu, Zante and Kefalonia recently. 30-35c each day, a welcome breeze, and a couple of days where it topped 40c in the first week. Our hotel provided sunbeds on the beach, but where you had to pay it was 6 euros for the day.
Food was excellent everywhere we ate, and well priced too. 15 euros for grilled shrimps, 8 euros for swordfish steak, 7 euros for Lamb Kleftico and Souvlaki, 11 euros for T bone steak, and 4 euros for half a litre of house rose, which was lovely.

So, thats summer over for me now. This morning its misty and dull, such a contrast.

Hi guys, it's been a while. A couple of reasons, I've been busy cavorting and also, more importantly, the fact that I was on a bit of a downer about my skiing after Tignes. Having now visited the snow centre in Hemel I can confirm that the passion is reignited!

Nice photos Tony. We're winging it this year. We've got three weeks in August booked off work and will wait until as late as poss to try and grab something last minute. I love planning, I love being spontaneous but I can confirm that I hate planning to be spontaneous!

I've also got a weekend in Brussels in October with the girls to celebrate my 40th. I don't like all the whispering going on I can tell you!

I'm excited though :D

Tony, you deny your talent, your photos have great character. You have a good eye for composition, and the colours are stunning.

I rarely paint from photos, but a couple of yours, and one of Ise's could prove tempting.

I really like Greece, but since taking on our GD commitment, we only ever take a week in summer, and Greece needs a couple of weeks to do the journey justice.

Does leave more weeks for the winter though!

Have once seen a sea snake, ((I have met a few swimming in Australian rivers!), but this was just after jumping off a tourist boat off the Turkish coast, and swimming for a mile or so alongside the boat, then climbing back on board. The snake then appeared.

Thanks Dave. I spent a couple of hours in the wee hours this morning playing with the colours: I like the moody feel to the blues, reds, etc.

Rose, the Caldera side of the Island is quite simply stunning, nowhere like it with those sugar cube buildings clinging on to the cliffs. It is however usually very pricey, but if you shop around you can get good deals, especially with Olympic Holidays.

I am hoping to get to Skiathos or Kefalonia next summer, or maybe Paxos...there are so many to choose from.

Dave, its only 3.5 hours on a flight from London, I dont think thats much for a weeks holiday. I did 4 hours flying for a week in Egypy in 2007, and it didnt interfere with the trip.

It certainly was nice accomodation but I doubt it will be on offer through TO next year. The rep said it was the best on their books and they could not understand why the owner had gone with a TO as she could get double that if she went independant. I would love to go there again but for longer, but there are so many other Greek Islands left to visit.

Dave, its only 3.5 hours on a flight from London, I dont think thats much for a weeks holiday. I did 4 hours flying for a week in Egypy in 2007, and it didnt interfere with the trip.

It may be an age thing Tony, we are 4+ hours, and transport time. We had only a couple of days notice, when the GD was taken into the Forfar training centre for a week. The choice was Menorca, Croatia, a couple of Greek Islands. The flights times were the real clincher, arriving in Greece at 2.30am, add transfer time, arriving back in Edinburgh at 4.00 am.

London gives you southerners an advantage.

My best memories of Kos were the ancient sites of civilisations. We both felt the hand of history on our shoulders. Now who was it that first said that......?

Hi Bandit with Corfu really just which are the best parts to go to. Dont want a load of clubs and drunks. Maybe some-where we dont have to hire a car. I loved Lefkas but apart from the beautiful sea and island scapes and the beaches not to much else. Would like a few interesting landscapes, landmarks ruins etc.

Hi Rose

It's quite a big island, well, stuff is spread out, so it's possible to hire a car as and when you need one. We rented either cars or mopeds. There is a mountain in the north of the island, pretty much all traffic goes over this....the 2 of us, 1 moped, inflatable lilo folded onto the rack :D

I have found the locals to be pretty friendly and helpful, never been ripped off on the island.

Stunning setting, has to be Paleokastritsa,very hilly, amazing clear sea, Monastery perched on the hill.

Must see, Corfu town. Plenty of British colonial influences on show in the buildings, and you can stop and have a drink at the Liston, and watch the madness pass on by.

Cricket is still played in the centre of Corfu Town, where there is a large green space. Go to town on Sat evening, it's manic, with shops selling everything all out on the pavements.

Sidari is worth a visit, if only to swim through the Canal D'Amour, though the town has it's tat and tacky bars.

Mouse Island is little more than a photo for the collection!

Everywhere you look there are Olive Groves, try and get some oil to bring home in a Tin, so it can go in your case.

The Achillion Palance is not very old, bit of a con IMHO!

You can see Albania, it's really close. You could not visit, when I was last on Corfu, but that may have changed.

There are some posh hotels just outside Corfu Town, but you could be anywhere if you chose to stay in one.

Mozzies...you will need a good repellent, plus plug-ins for your accommodation.

Avoid, at all costs, The Pink Palace, not just because it's PINK :lol:

We are not really culture vultures, so don't do ruins usually, when we went to Corfu we tended to go peasant, eat local, use unmade back roads, dress down yada yada :D

Which may (or not) not be your style. I hope this helps :wink:

Rose, I have been to Rhodes twice and would definitely go back. The place to be is Lindos, although we stopped 3 miles away in Pekfos as it was much cheaper and had some good beaches too. We had a car to get about for a few days which was worth it for sure. If you want specific info, PM me.
As for Corfu, the only place I would go to there would be Paleokastritsa.

Kefalonia is high on my radar for next year, but I think you would probably like Paxos, Ios or Santorini seeing as you are not so much of a beach person!

Thanks Tony. I do spend a bit of time on the beach but easily get bored. But I did find that as it was hot and the water so nice it was easier to do. What region are you thinking for Kefalonia? Its still very high on my list and the couple of hours I spent there it was fabulous. It just had a good feel about it. So I will probably be looking at Fiscardo area, I could have spent all day there. Did you have a car while in Santorini or was it easy to walk around there? We had to have a car in Lefkas, this way we went about three quarters of the way round the island.

I was in Santorini for 2 weeks, and had a car for 3 days. In that time we got to see all that we wanted to, its a small place. Public buses however are very reliable and run every half hour from everywhere, and all go to the capital, Thira. It cost about 2 euros from one end of the island to the other.
We also found a large supermarket in the next resort who would come and collect you from your hotel in a minibus when you rang them, you do your shopping, and they bring you back - free of charge! What an utterly brilliant idea!!!!

Santorini is stunningly beautiful on the volcano side, and the black beaches at Perissa and Kamari are fine if you want to chill out and sunbathe or relax.

As for Kefalonia, I really have not researched it that much yet, and am yet to find anyone who didnt say the island was gorgeous. I think Lassi is the main resort but even that is hardly over commercialised.

I can tell you plenty about Rhodes though....!!!!

Never thought I'd say it but we too are going to Greece next year :shock:

We'll more than likely be sacrificing a second Ski trip to go to Porto Heli with Neilson for some serious dinghy sailing.

It will be nothing like a ski holiday - I'll be constantly monitoring internet based weather forecasts for a month prior to departure. My luggage will be over the weight limit because of all the 'gear'. First in the water, last out the water, dinner then bed. Dodgey eyewear induced tan lines.

I'm looking forward to the change really!

I certainly am hooked on the Greek Islands and Kefalonia was always my first choice, and I was going to Niederau for a walking holiday at that time but am afraid Kef wins hands down. The weather wont be so hot as when we went in June but who cares. Have a good deal, nice accomodation and a car for the week at Trapezaki.

The family I sat next to on the plane from Lefkas had just done a sailing holiday. They based themselves in Parga as they had 2 kids and thought it best that they slept on land rather than the yacht. They all learnt to sail every day, said it was the best trip ever and would be booking straight away for next year.

Ski Girl and allegedly, AmandaN are due in N this summer. Several of my friends there too.

Have a look at Turkey too. One of the best holidays we've ever had was a flotilla with Sunsail - every day jumping off the boat to wake you up, breakfast in a restaurant that you can only reach by boat, set sail and off to the next one.

Truly incredible.

We've just got a new computer and the photos aren't on here yet but I'll try and post a few once we've got ourselves sorted.

I still don't know where or when we're going in August! Possibly on a boat if we can get a good deal... Anyone been to Cape Verde?

No, but I have looked at it several times over the past couple of years. A friend of mine went last summer, but stayed in one of the RIU all inclusive resorts - bit of a peasant thing to do going to such a beautiful place like that methinks.

I have read some good reviews of the place, although it is starting to become more and more commercialised. It is seemingly one of the most popular places for new developments in Europe (still classed as Europe due to Portuguese ownership I was led to believe?)

I have however bene put off by the high prices in comparison to the Greek Islands.

It does have some fantastic beaches and snorkeling/diving to be had.

I have just booked 11 days in Pefkos from 1st Aug. 3 star SC for 350 each. Co-op Travel. I am hoping it turns out to be an absolute bargain.
I have been given the advise of this location by a fellow J2Ski member so I am sure it will be superb!!

I've never really experienced much of tourist Turkey as the flotilla is totally off the beaten track. The whole flotilla had an evening in Fethiye though which I enjoyed very much.

Tony, I'm beating myself up about those Riu hotels. We want a holiday with lots of activity and the small ones don't have it but I've never been to a big hotel like that before. I'm very tempted by the bearable temperature, sea and white sand though. I suppose it depends if we can get a deal that can't be turned down.

It was not rude a bit patronising and It just explained about food poisoning on the first day, pushy locals who actually tried to push me into their bars, poor restaurants, we should not really include that one as Greece is not a culinary experience, and general British holiday makers singing songs about Alice !!! and no it was not Marmaris but Kusadasi......a wonderful experience
never to be experienced again.

Your absolutely right the two countries you talk about are the only ones I have had bad experiences in, I have never had those experiences in France,Germany,Spain,Italy,Andorra,Scotland,Switzerland,Belgium,Holland,South Africa,Greece would I go back Austria maybe as I met some pleasant people in Innsbruck where we shared a bottle of Champers with a shop owner whilst watching the 1999 eclipse and Kitzbuhel where we spent a great lunch time being entertained by a restaurant owner, Turkey not while I have breath in my body, why would I return to a place that gave me food poisoning on the first day.
Holidays are about choice and thats mine....... :D

Nelly I have just checked the long range weather forecast for North Cornwall starting the 25/07/09.....heavy rain followed drizzle for ten days and then it clears for an afternoon and then rains again, I hope your not camping :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

The shite weather started early, went to Yeovil air festival to-day and although it was'nt raining to bad the clouds stopped every-thing we went to see from flying. Except the main one the Vulcan broke down. Well P**D OFF

Are you really going to Cannes? My daughter is currently in Nice, for a French language school holiday. She says the beach at Nice is horrible and pebbly, but she went to Cannes for the day and she says the beaches at Cannes are nice and sandy and Cannes is a much better place - more fancy shops and restaurants etc.

Yes, I am off to Cannes next friday staying 8k outside in a small village La Roquette-sur-Siagne, and the Nice beach is not so nice a bit like Brighton, I'm not really into fancy shops but I do like to people watch thats if I can get Little W out of the pool, I shall enter a few of the fancy shops in shorts T-shirt and flip flops just to pee them off, I really do not do snobbery.
I'll shall be BBQing around the pool a couple of nights because the French do like to charge a lot of dosh for their food and I have to work hard for my money so I don't like paying over the odds for average food, so your daughter is very welcome to join us in our humble rented abode for a glass of Rose and a burnt offering, if she does want to come along she will be made very welcome Pm for mobile etc etc.

Thanks very much Ian, that's very kind of you. Unfortunately my daughter is flying back on Saturday, after 2 weeks out there. The offer of food would have been very gratefully received (assuming you could have rustled up a vegetarian burnt offering). She was supposed to have been on self-catering, because of all her food intolerance problems, but there was a misunderstanding, and then when that was cleared up her French hostess went on about how clean her kitchen was and wanted to watch my daughter cooking in her kitchen!

So, as a result of that, my daughter has been living on pringles, oat bars, peaches and chocolate for the last week, and eating in the street or on the beach. I don't think she's had a proper meal since she left home. She's very excited today because they're off on a day trip to Monte Carlo/Monaco, home to the mythical country of Genovia (Princess Diaries books).

Have fun in Cannes. It sounds like a great place. My daughter says it has English type shops like Accessorize (however you spell it) where she bought new fancy flip flops and sun glasses. I'm sure your daughter will have a great time.

She'll love Monaco we were across the border in Italy last year and drove across for a visit, I really liked the place didn't find it over expensive wonderfully clean and a fantastic atmosphere, plenty of flash boats and sports cars, must have picked the most unfriendly restaurant for lunch the owner seemed very put out when I didn't tip, I tip on service and it was poor although the food was good.

Interesting article, I remember an American guy at a fuel stop just outside Narbonne several years ago fueling his vehicle with diesel and wondering why his car would not start,thanks for the warning I'm hoping I won't get caught out but there is always a first time for everything :oops:

Don't worry Nelly I'm only going to annoy the rich people and I will sit on their private beach, they tried to throw us off a so called private beach in southern Italy this very nice Italian person very politely asked if I would not sit on their sun beds as I was not staying at the hotel I also politely agreed and removed the offending sun bed and laid our towels on the sand, they wasn't particularly happy but I was allowed to use the sand. One up for the poor people !!!!! 8) 8)

Hi Ian,
Yes, my daughter did enjoy Monaco very much thanks. I think she's also going to have a look at Antibes. I did have a look on the interent to see if she could get to St Tropez from Nice, but it looked awfully complicated and a very long way, because there isn't a direct train.

Tomorrow is Bastille day, so she hasn't got any French lessons, and there should be plenty of street parties and fireworks.

I knew petrol was essence, but not that diesel was gazola. I know gaz is the bubbly stuff in my mineral water.

Are you swatting up on your French, or you might end up with bubbles in your petrol tank?

You're quite right (as usual!). I've checked in my French dictionary and diesel is 'gazole' not gazola.

I also discovered that 'gaz' is medical for 'wind' :shock: in my dictionary, as well as the gas in my drink. Maybe we should all stay safely this side of the channel, where at least we all speak our own variety of English? :lol:

I have never recovered from the embarassment of ordering pepper on my chips instead of peas (poivre and pois) when we were having a day in Paris many years ago. My nearly grown up children always remind me of this whenever they think I'm getting too big for my boots. And the worst of it was that I'm really stubborn and I used to get embarassed easily, so I ate all my chips and pretended that I wanted pepper sauce on them all the time!

And while I'm thinking about it, I believe that the French meaning of 'propre' depends on whether it's before or after the noun (as in clean, or belonging to me). And according to my dictionary it can also mean toilet trained! Speaking another language is awfully difficult.

My own local garage once put petrol in my car instead of diesel, when I wasn't looking, and they had to tow me back after I'd gone about 1/4 of a mile, and clean out my fuel tank. Luckily my car was O.K. because I stopped as soon as it did the first 'hop'. I think it does less damage if you put diesel in a petrol car.

Looking at those rude drinks reminded me of how we, as students, used to laugh at the latin name for common tormentil - Potentilla erecta - a member of the rose family, or Rosaceae. It's a pretty little plant, like a strawberry but with yellow flowers.

I wonder if there's a site for rude flower names?

Ian,
The ironing is not for us (ski virgins thread) but for the holidaymakers. I've always refused to do any ironing, and when I got married I specified that no-one was to give me an iron. So I don't iron our own stuff, and in our original holiday cottage I wash and dry the bedding and throws and put the bedding back on the beds straightaway when it comes hot out of the drier so I don't have to iron it.

But the new holiday cottage has one double, 2 king size, and one single bed, which is too much for me to wash as I go. So I wash it all after the changeover, dry it, and then take it into town to get it all ironed. At least it means I can buy Egyptian cotton sheets and pillowcases for that house, because they have to be ironed or they're all crinkly, even straight out of the drier. And for around 70 pence per large item I don't think it's worth doing it myself, plus they do a much better job with their big machines.

Well done for finding the cat (and the cat hotel!). You just have to find your way to your holiday place in France now.

Thanks Rose, Kefalonia is definitely an option for us.
We're looking for a club holiday rather than villa this year, we fancy an active one. Sailing round the Greek or Turkish islands is still possibility depending on one major factor, fingers crossed.

I've become obsessed with the weather forecasts over the last week, it's amazing how often the long range forecast changes. Literally by the hour every day, I checked this morning and it was doom and gloom, a few hours later and it's all sunshine and roses.

I think I will just have to stick my head out the window every morning, more reliable.

I don't mind people being flash our european folk do it so well the brits I saw in St Trop had no class at all well about as much as I have......the brits seem to wanna tell everybody that I got some cash the euros just cruise along gently doing their own thing, Give me the flash euro anyday, I'd like to flush the flash brits. Seeing as everyone is talking about holidays I thought I would say that in 4 days time I will be in Rhodes were the weather is currently 42C and Sunny.
I cant wait for it....... however, I am moving house the day before so I think I will need a holiday after that.

On a more relevant topic relating to this website, it is 24 weeks until the skis are on and I am gracefully falling on my arse in ADH........ not that I am wishing my summer holiday away.

Step-daughter is feeling much brighter now, the doctor was called out in the early hours of Saturday morning, he didn't know if she had swine flu or tonsillitis (symptoms very similar) so he gave her tamiflu and antibiotics. It's obviously doing the job.

I popped out in my lunch break to-day got a few holiday brochures, (as if I did,nt have enough already). Picked up an Inghams villa holiday cat. can not believe what I saw. A villa in Cote D'Azur peak season price GBP32,000 per week. Yes its in 3000 acres, has direct access to the sea and mooring dock, it had 6 bedrooms and a private pool. But 32 grand per week that obscene, who could pay that sort of money.

Well, I shall be holidaying in the UK. But then I'm lucky to live in Cornwall.
Money is certainly tighter this year with the economic slow down. Builders / developers who were building houses are now competing with the smaller guy like me and doing patios, decking, porches etc. Larger companies like Anglia & Everest are banging their prices right down and matching the little guy on quotes. Really hard at the minute to get the jobs in.
I'm putting what money I can away to ensure we go skiing. During our summer break we'll head to the beach (hopefully), take our boat out for a couple of days, go surfing, hire kayaks, take the bikes out. With the amazing countryside, beaches and visitor attractions we have in Cornwall and the UK I can see why people stay in this country. There's no such thing as bad weather, just people wearing the wrong clothes. Yes, it would be great to have some more sunshine but you cannot knock those who can't or don't want to go abroad.

Agree with you any small companies/building/windows etc the economic down turn is really affecting them. Two years ago my hubby was fitting a conservatory a month, 4 or 5 complete sets of windows and doors. Although he still gets a bit coming in he is mostly doing repairs and patching up, it gives him a job every day but not huge money. The bigger companys are definately dropping their prices.

My point was that it costs as much, if not more to holiday in the UK as it does to go abroad, provided you can find a good deal (which I have always managed to), and thats without even considering the packed roads, poor public transport, poor standards of service, standard of accommodation (generalised comment admittedly), price of food and drink, higher risk of crime (theft, break in, vandalism, etc), the weather (wearing the wrong clothes....come on!!!!).......

Up until 5 years ago I had never had a holiday abroad, never even had a passport. The reasons were usually scared of flying, lack of funds etc. Plus I always assumed the likes of me could not afford holidays abroad. I know in the last few years I have had several holidays abroad and not always the cheapest accomadation. But when I think of some of the holidays I have spent in this country I ended up spending a lot more money than the holidays I take abroad. My holiday to Lefkas our spending money could have worked out about half of what I last spent on a holiday to Cornwall. I found in Greece food and drink much cheaper. It was cheaper to hire parasols/sun beds in Greece than it is the hire a deckchair in this country. You pay the earth for car parking in this country no charge in Greece. I visited local beauty spots, ruins,waterfalls, etc all for free you would pay large entrance fees in this country. I did a 10 hour boat cruise and visited lots of islands, beachs and landmarks for 20 euros each, in this country you would have paid the earth.
Years ago I used to rent a caravan in Devon on a huge all purpose site, they now charge more per week for the hire of that caravan than we paid for a villa/car and flights to Greece.
I have done both holidays but I know now what I prefer, but its every-ones choice.
Plus the weather was always bad in this country, never ever had good weather.

Please don't knock holidays in this country too hard, or I won't have any customers left for our holiday cottages :cry:

One thing we do quite well with is dogs. It's very difficult for people to take their dogs abroad and we live right next to a public footpath which connects with the coastal path, so people can walk 186 miles with their dogs if they like. And the national park do shuttle buses covering the coastal path, so you can walk one way and get the bus back, or vice versa.

And most people know that sometimes it rains, even in summer, and they bring wet gear and wellies so they can still go out walking even if it's raining.

But I agree our cottages aren't very cheap. The advantage is that people can drive here, and bring all their stuff, which saves all the hassle of getting to airports and catching flights etc.

My hubby is in the window industry (they manufacture and he sells to trade)and his business is booming. They've recently had some of the best months ever.

TH - I do agree with you about the deals going abroad etc, our 2 weeks camping are costing GBP450 which is a bargain, however we will probably spend around GBP1000 in those 2 weeks with the weather being crap and could probably have found a good deal abroad for the same amount. Saying that, we'd also have to put the dog in kennels (GBP150), park the car (GBP150) and have spending money on top, so scrap that.

With any luck this time next year I'll be packing my bikini instead of my wellies and jetting off to sunnier climes, I would rather spend a bit more on having a nice sunny two weeks than a soggy wet one. This year it's just not possible.

Just came back from the Orkney Islands. We were camping for 10 days. 1 morning of heavy rain apart from that excellent weather.. sunny& blue skies..Not expensive...went to visit an ancient chambered cairn..no charge although in the care of Historic Scotland. Many beautiful sandy beaches. We went fishing as well this was also no charge.. Our dog came with us so no expensive kennels .There are many good deals in the uk & excellent places to visit etc. :D

Rose, you are absolutely right about finding Greece so reasonable and beautiful. I know a lot of people who religiously take or took summer holidays in Devon, Cornwall, Wales, Northumberland etc and said places like Greece and Italy were out of reach for them, without even looking at the cost comparison. Many of those people only went in the UK because it was a family trait, and something they had had instilled in them to do. Many of them now holiday abroad and never take a break in the UK. Not that I am saying thats a good thing, as tourism plays a part in our economy, but I really cant blame anyone who feels the same way as me, inasmuch as holidays in the UK really are unreliable and expensive.

Lovely photo of the beach in sun & Greece is beautiful. But I still maintain if you cannot actually afford a passport then a Sun (the newspaper) holiday will just have to do.
There really are people for whom a holiday abroad is just a dream.
I do agree, if you are going the whole hog on a UK holiday it can be expensive, but if you ain't got it you can't spend it here either.
And....No, I'm not holidaying in this country this summer, because like you I don't have to.

In the defence of me old mucker Tony, he is not snobbish, just a genuinely nice bloke as I am sure those of you who have met him on the travels would agree with.

In relation to the topic, holidaying in this country is absolutely pants in my opinion.
Holiday time is one where you want to be able to relax in the summer sun and get a nice tan whilst having a few beers.

I agree that it is possible to do this in the UK but you do have to be very lucky with the weather.

I mean a few weeks ago, the Met Office were forecasting a heatwave for August and now it is most likely to be unsettled.

In relation to the cost of holidaying, the price of holidays in the UK is ridiculous for what is on offer compared to travelling abroad.
I know that people will talk about the cost differences but is there really that much difference????

I dont think that there is and if there is difference it is going to be GBP100 - GBP200 pounds at the most.
Considering that difference, what price could you put on having constant sunshine on you all day long with temperatures +35C and more, sitting by the pool drinking Pimms, VC, GT, or whatever the hell else tickles your fancy.
Not having to think of what activities you need to arrange for your children because it is so hot they just want to "bomb" in and out of the pool all day.

Anyway, that is only my opinion and on that note I am off to pack my suitcase as I am going to Rhodes on in 60 hours for 11nights which cost GBP350 each.

Well,
Our holiday cottage is much cheaper than GBP350 per person, even at this time of year.

It is just under GBP100 per person for one week, for 7 people. And it's four star, with 3 tellys, DVD's and books, free broadband, a huge enclosed garden with patio and picnic table, one mile from the beach, right next to a public footpath, and it's a fourteenth century traditional stone built farmhouse.

The only thing we can't promise is sunshine for the whole week. But people like driving about sightseeing, and shopping, which they can do even when it's raining. And when it's hot and sunny there are about 30 sandy beaches to choose from.

Sadly I doubt I'll ever darken the doors of West Wales again, too scared to in case I see my pshyco ex.

Back to sunshine holidays, mine clearly won't be remotely sunny as the forecast for August is completely pants. Anyway, too much sunshine is bad for you so instead of sun bathing I shall get wind burn and cover myself in Cornish mud for a nice even tanned effect.

Why would 2 people want a 4 bedroomed farmhouse for 7 people?

It's not like one of those squashy French self-catering apartments. It's got 2 king size beds (one of which splits into 2 single 2 foot six beds), one ordinary double, and one ordinary single bed. And it's got a mahogany dining table that can seat 10 people (we use it at Christmas). Plus it has a huge bathroom with bath and shower, and another wet room on the ground floor with shower and toilet and washbasin.

We also have another cottage for 4 people, with only 2 bedrooms, and that costs GBP513 for one week high season.

But unfortunately for anyone thinking of staying in either of them this summer holiday, they've both been booked up for ages :lol:

We only get about 2/3 of what the holidaymakers pay, because our agents take 22 1/2 % plus VAT.

Well, most couples probably wouldn't. But it was a little warped to throw in a cost of GBP100 per person, based on their being 7 people in the party, as the price of the property remains constant irrespective of the group size.
Therefore, to compare your lovely cottages to Stewart's holiday is, well, almost impossible.

However, for 2 people, I think the Greek option was by far the better one.

It was the hotel in the end. Unbelievable reviews on tripadvisor, loads of activities, no swim-up bar, the beach is like Tony's picture and, most importantly, they have dinghy sailing. The better half deserves it, he's worked himself to the bone since his dad has retired and business is on the up.

Went to Cuba for honeymoon and it is an amazing place. we went at this time of year and there were some hefty thunderstorms but as quick as they arrived they ended.
The people have absolutely nothing but their warmth and hospitality comes unconditional.

Don't know where in Cuba you're staying but if you get a chance go to Havana. We flew up there for the day. Full on, knackering and wish we'd one for 2 days.

7 years on we still long to go back and still talk of the brilliant time we had there.

We were in Holguin further down the coast. Havana has to be done. The only down side to the Havana trip we did was that we were guided everywhere. Because all the transport and guides are government run, you're restricted in where you go, what you see and your questions are answered very diplomatically but no necessarily hoestly.

At the time I was still in the forces and so going to Cuba involved a lot of security clearance. I made sure I didn't travel with my military ID card, gave my job description as engineer rather than armed forces and told no one what I really did for a living. When we got to Holguin airport I put my hand luggage through the X ray machine and walked off, totally forgetting to collect it from the other end of the machine. OMG you should have seen the uproar!! I was absolutely cacking it!! Really had to bluff my way round the questions they were asking.

You will have the time of your life there.

I have to admit it is rather cold and rainy here in West Wales at the moment. I have just lit the wood stove for our holidaymakers in the farmhouse. But they seem happy enough. One of the kids is on the internet already, and they have plenty of books and DVD's, and they have brought waterproof clothing.

Lets hope the British weather improves. Monday was a gorgeous day - sunny and roasting hot and I was on the beach, and I even got a bit sunburnt.

I hope you have a good time in Cornwall Nelly. It will be a while before we make enough money with our new holiday cottage to pay for the improvements we made, which cost about GBP20,000, so probably about 5 years.

So we will still be going on 'cheap' ski-ing holidays staying in squashy 2 star self-catering French apartments. But as long as the ski-ing is good I don't care about the accommodation. And I don't mind cleaning up after us, because I make my money cleaning anyway, and it's easier cleaning up our own mess than cleaning up someone else's.

My wife loves the greek food but then again she is a big carnivore, I tend to find greek food a bit on the boring side apart from Santorini where I found the restaurants varied with some excellent dishes that I have never found on other Greek Islands, I remember a dish of deep fried tomatoes and a wonderful stuffed squid. 8) :lol: 8) :lol:

Interesting comments Ian. Of all the places I have been to on holidays, Greece probably has the widest and most varied choice of food. I found such a good lamb kleftiko in 1 restaurant in Santorini, I could have eaten it every night.
I never once got bored of eating Greek food, something different every night, meat or fish.

Beacuse I dont do any cooking my Hubby does it all. He is a wonderful chef and should really be doing it for a living. I have some sort of gastronomic dinner and pud every night. So I am not usually that immpressed by food abroad. But I could not fault it in Greece.
To-night I will be having homemade pumpkin soup, bean ratatoue with grilled salmon. Pudding is home made chocolate cheese cake, lovely.

Have just been looking all around their site for all their accomodations around October the flights are free, they must really be struggling to fill their villa's. There is also some deals for Kefalonia, like chalet/villa/flights for GBP380 for two. I am gutted, wish I had held off until now to book.

It does get wet and windy after late October down there. The only parts of Greece I would touch in October would be Kos, Crete and Rhodes to be honest. Or Cyrpus, obviously.

Yes I know it wont be the temps we had in June but what the heck its better than it will be here, I'll take the chance.

You're absolutely right.
I am off for 4 days to Spain next weekend exactly for that reason, because its turning chilly here and its still 30c out there and I want a few last days with the sun on my face this summer.

Come and spend a few days in sunny Norfolk the weather has been fantastic for the last four weeks and is due to continue, I will have to put the hose pipe on the grass tomorrow as it has gone brown

Thats an easy one Dave. Egypt. The only place within reasonable travel distance (5 hour flight) where you can guarantee it will be warm. Canaries are volatile, Greece is often wet and windy, as for Venice....it will probably be flooded and you will be walking on planks (sounds familiar for users of this forum....)

Your right about Cyprus.....as for Venice eat the Venice pizza at pizza express they donate some cash to sure up the town, I think I must kept the place from sinking for many years 8) 8)
