Well I'm a bit bored so I thought I might start this old thread up again as I am starting to get a little bit excited, I'm off to Adelboden in 21 days time, and I still have not booked the hire car yet.

i've booked schladming for xmas and new year, my son has joined raf so didnt fancy being alone at silly season, then Feb i am off to Italy with the school aaarrrgghhhh 22 kids at min signed up gonna be fun, how many can i get away with knocking over so hopefully will get a last blast in march, fancying Switzerland bandits blog is great so looking in to that

I went there a few years ago and I found the place to be fantastic I hope to return soon and ski a lot more now the kids are now that much older, I know Tony_H is off there soon so read his posting on his return for an update.

I don't really use the Vultures/Tour operators as I have been D.I.Ying winter and summer holidays for some years now the To's have there uses but I am not a mass holiday maker. Last years summer holiday I heard two English voices in two weeks. I think it adds to the adventure we have some great times overnight stops in places off the tourist map, locals looking at you as if your from mars but always very friendly, thats my type of holiday.

thanks LOTA just off for a look, wickers i only use TO's cause i travel on my own i'd be too nervous to DIY alone i might go missing then who would you laugh at on here

I always think it's more dodgy travelling with a lot of strange sometimes drunk people, it not always true safety in numbers, each to their own I always say....

yes be boring world if we all the same, myself i am not a drinker like the odd tipple of bitter 'n' lime but anything stronger and i be out for a week and a hangover for a further week low tolerance

I travel alone several times a year. It's no big deal really

Also, you can talk to the folks that you choose, and you are not stuck in a hotel with the same boorish idiots with whom you were obliged to share the plane and transfer bus

it was quite a culture shock when i first moved down here i came from whey aye pet to hey up me duck but i wouldnt go back its strange when i pop up to see them in tyne and wear for the day totally different language you sorted little wickers now? again i amuseless at that my lad has to do it for me, i have just bought my first mp3 for travelling march keep having to remember yes people can hear me signing along so i wont be hard to spot on the slopes.

Yes, nearly there but I cound'nt track down too many edit versions so I'll have to just download the singles just too many swear words.

We've booked to go with them (13 sleeps!) to Claviere for a week, am packed already, although unpacking again is likely.

Bookable Ski also seem to have a lot of reasonable deals, and teletext have some bargains too, although have noticed some of their 'deals' don't include transfers.

My niece is on her way to Austria for her first ski trip with the school, she seemed more excited about being able to snowball the teachers rather than the actual skiing. 12 years olds

I had an email from a mate on Friday afternoon to say he just booked for his family to go to Pra de loup (not somewhere i have come across before) in france, and he went yesterday.....thats last minute!

2 weeks today and I will be arriving in Serre Che, and started counting the days now big time. There appears to be fantastic snow out there but a little bit of a top up the days before we go would be nice, so I can enjoy the offpiste more.

Theres 11 of us going in a group, only me and Mrs H are skiers the rest are boarders. Most of them were in Sauze with us in Feb last year so it is going to be lively!

Just sat here now watching the slalom on Eurosport.
My new bindings turned up on Friday so they are going in this week to be fitted, so I will be able to try out the new wider skis when I go.
Really cant wait now.

For those of you looking for late deals, I'd look at Crystal and Inghams of the tour ops, as well as Skiworld. The best time to look is midweek for the weekend coming, as thats where you get the real deals. I saw GBP229 for a catered chalet in Les 2 Alpes if you could go in 4 days time.
Otherwise, bookableski.co.uk is as good as anywhere else. Funnily enough, with the fantastic snow across Europe, the deals are not as low priced as I have seen before, but then again its half term week too.

I am thinking that going on 1st March, I might be able to get a late weekend in somewhere mid April......???

Val d'isere is my favourite resort in the world (so far) and as costly as it is, when we were there a couple of years ago we discovered a great place to lunch that did barbecues in good weather for a reasonable price. I'll need to dig out a map to remind myself of what it's called (unless someone knows off the top of their head) if you want to know!

All depends what a reasonable price is, I tend to just snack at lunch time washed down with something amber and cold, cold meat and cheese with some local bread...

Still not decided; won't be Adelboden as I couldn't get any suitable accommodation (Lenk remains a possibility though).

Mate of my brother's recounted a tale last week of being charged 18 Euros for three small bottles of water in Alpe d'Huez. That would have been a rip off before sterling's collapse - and is another reason why I'm unlikely ever to return to France for ski-ing.

In 2 weeks - to Auron. Short transfer time from Nice. Had a great weekend skiing there last year/ GOing for 5 days in March. Apres Ski is quite (its French! )

Assuming they still do the bbq, it's at the bottom of the Madeline lift/green run on the Solaise area. Can't remember the cost but I do remember it being reasonable (3 years ago) for a slab of meat, jacket potatoe and salad.

Weatherspoons, I bet. Anyone else noticed that when you go through to departures at gatwick, its all changed recently. We seemed to go through the back door to get in, and the queues for security were enormous at 5 in the morning.

It's done...have opted for an old fave: Hotel Eden in Arosa on March 8.

Fantastic price as well: 715CHF including lift pass! Sensational value for a designer hotel!

Spoke to the hotel just five minutes ago; the receptionist said it was still snowing!

I like to think of myself as a professional skiver/ instructor !!

I am always torn between to sports, but the good thing is when the snow is around the diving a little quite, so we can take the time away Then when the snow has gone, the sea is calling !!

That's a bit like us. We took up sailing last March. When the snow melts and the ski gear gets put away, it's time to get out the wetsuits!

Actually there's a bit of overlap as we sailed yesterday and we're skiing again in a few weeks!

3 sleeps to go for us..than we take off for a 4 day stay up on the mountain at sunpeaks. Really looking forward to it,love staying at the Delta hotel and its so nice not having to drive home after skiing....instead just sit in the hottub
Snowed last night and going to keep snowing till we leave...perfect timing!

Most days, about 9.45am and riding the lift by 10.00 am.

Might get a few days in Utah, mid March. It's a freebe if I do some electrical work for my brother in law in Park City.

If you think unemployment is lucky, then yes I am. I normally manage to take several weeks off most winters, but this is a bit more serious. Actually it is lucky, my season pass is only about $350, so it doesn't cost much to ski. Just a few gallons of petrol a week, which at 1.35 GBP a gallon doesn't break the bank. My wife also likes that I'm having to ebay off a bunch of the vast collection of ski and snowboard junk that's piled up in my office (the future music room if I can ever clear it out

Countdown continuing only 12 days and counting, I have been lazy since my return from LGb I was even thinking of letting the local ski shop service my skis but no I'm back the not so lean fighting machine. Got a couple of days off work so today after taking Little Wickham to school I'm into the garage repair a couple of scratches to Mrs W skis and then edge and wax, I'm getting in the mood, I've just booked the hire car on the rest of my air miles, so we are are starting to a rocking and a rollin. Adelboden here I come......

hi new to any forum have been reading this forum over 12 month's now just plucked up courage to join in,me and g/f are going to banff wed for 10 nights sooooo exited cant sleep at nights silly realy am in my fifty's and only been skiing 3 years this is our fifth trip cant wait.

There has been a few changes, but we are still going to Serre Che.We were going 20th March but circumstances meant we had the chance to go 1st March with a group of people from our village for a fraction of the price, and still have one in hand for next year.

Yes I guess once the half terms are out of the way resorts normally become quieter except at week-ends, to counteract that one I'm going mid week, fly out on the Sunday fly back on the Thursday, the plan is we will avoid the weekenders who come out more as the weather becomes warmer.

Just got back tonight! 4 days of great skiing. Today there was so much new powder,almost too much for the old wrecked knee

My friend came up today to ski with us...and went home with a spiral fracture in her ankle kind of put a crappy end to a wonderful vacation.

Have just booked my end of season blast to Bsm/Les arcs for the last week of the season....can't wait its going to be a long 6 or 7 weeks ...blinding deal on flights and car hire GBP91 each for two mates and myself...mind you i checked the flightprices again just after i had booked/paid for them and they had gone up by GBP9.28 in the time it had taken me to book.

Ol'e Stellios must be making a buck or two.....

Only 31/2 sleeps before heading off to Soll on Saturday for a long weekend . Crack of dawn flight so up really early - still, if all goes to plan should be on the slopes by lunchtime

BTW, anybody know what road conditions are like around Soll at the moment?. We are driving down from Munich and I am little concerned about road conditions. The snow keeps coming and more is due on Saturday. Great for skiing but not so good for driving - I always find it really difficult to get my edges in a car .

I really begrudge giving the carhire company Euro25 to hire chains that I will probably not use on top of the Euro25 that they charge for winter tires that are probably on all their cars at this time of the year anyway . However, with so much snow about, I am wondering whether I might really need them.

Soell is same height and area as N. Forecast for Thur/Fri/Sat is 3cm,2cm,1cm. I would be happy to edge in those depths. Soell is a through road, so will be a priorty clearance road.

You might skite a bit through the village, but the winter tyres should be man enough.

Will give you a wave from the top of the Marbachjoch, when you are up on the Hohe Salve.

LM, Nothing will stop myself and Mrs W skiing on Sunday afternoon, If Mrs W does break a leg tomorrow on her way to work in the next couple of days she stays at home, cough's and colds I work though very rarly take time off from work I don't do sickness....

ha ha ha if you could see me know lol i look wonderful i have helmet hair, am freezing cold havent warm through since i got wet yesterday, tired and grumpy, no sleep at all, did a head count at 1am and 4 girls were missing, found hiding in the boys beds !!! #

well 2 were actually in the beds and 2 were, if you can imagine they have little cuppy holes under the bunk beds on the bottom bunks and they were in there,

even better was standing on ther landing at 6am with the pan and wooden spoon

I did that a couple of years ago. One pupil kept others awake until two in the morning, so i put her in a room of her own and then woke her up (loudly) at 6 the next morning. Gave her some work to do until breakfast. She was not amused and by 7 that evening was begging to go to bed early. I didn't let her go until 9 like the rest of the group...she was the first one asleep! A peaceful night was had by all!

best bit was all ready for coach at 1pm,

1.30 came and went, 1.45 hum worries, 2pm call to coach company, reply came

"oh is that pickup today? we've got you in diary for tomorrow"

middle of valley no mobile reception grrrrrr bus turned up at 3.30 so straight from there to ski club yippee

Oh memories, memories of school field trips....and I went to an all boys' grammar school!

Now just a few days to go - 0600 flight from Heathrow. Planned train arrives in resort at 12.09, quick check in - and on the piste by 1pm Sunday afternoon! And snow is forecast tomorrow and Thursday!

When booked the rate was something around two swiss francs to the pound, now it is 1.59, the hotel was happy to take the booking on my credit card for security, so I will pay the hotel bill on departure so unless the rate suddenly goes up which I can't see happening it gonna cost more. It's a pretty dam good hotel five course dinner in the evening plus spa. But never mind
It's not going stop us enjoying ourselves it is Mrs W and mine's treat mind you if the hotels a bit posh I don't what there gonna make of me in my jeans and T shirts

I look at it that my money is as good as any body else's, I might take the lap top but I'll have to check with the hotel if they have Wifi , I will not dress up its a ski resort casual dress as far as I'm concerned, so no dinner suite for me and no slurping my soup, decorum at all times, don't you know

I really don't worry what people think I am polite and socialable and will talk to anybody but if I want to tuck my napkin into the top of my shirt I surly will , and if somebody looks in a disaproving way I make eye contact and smile and they automatically smile back and laugh, I really don't do snobby, but I do cool

I'm with you. It's a holiday. It's supposed to be enjoyable. Really good hotels make you feel comfortable and welcome whether you could afford to buy the place three times over or have saved up for a special occasion.

I'm off 13 March, leaving the kids at home. Obsessively watching webcams etc, normal behaviours.

For this trip Little W gets really spoilt at her Grand parents, they are completely knackered after six days looking after Little W but they do enjoy having her and they are also quite local so it does not interfere with her schooling, but they find it hard getting up at 07.30 to get her to school by nine, retired people a life of leisure.

oh you guys are so lucky!!! no kids along,sounds like a great time!!

(Although 4 days straight skiing for my 8 year old was good for him...he out ski's me now..the crazy guy already is skiing double black diamond runs with bumps! (experts only)...and taking huge jumps...he is going to give me grey hairs.....
oh I have to add that the little bratty woke us up at 5am in the hotel to get out and ski!...it doesnt open till 8:30!

Have a peaceful relaxing ski holiday guys!

watching my boys coming down trolles in tignes (from the gondola I hasten to add) was one of the highlights of my life.
I really wish they'd been there with us on our last trip to see me ski the steepest slope I've skied in my life, so far

It is great seeing the little ones ski and enjoying it. My little guy is on his 4th year of skiing,I can barely watch him now because he scares the heck out of me...he is wild!

I would have loved seeing my Son ski but he has never shown any interest. Even when we gave him our holiday to Seefeld a few weeks ago he had a few taster sessions, said he was good but did'nt really grab him. Shame it would be nice to have had a holiay away with him.

In my experience the High Street is possibly the worst place to get euros, after the Bx de Change at airports... the spread (between what they will sell you euros at, and what they will buy euros at) would be hilarious if it weren't so tragic.

Luckily the ECB cut rates today along with the Bank of England, otherwise we'd be even worse off. 88p buys a euro; when I was last in euroland, val d'isere at Christmas, we were around 97p for a euro, so you're 11p to the good! Woo hoo!

Anyway. I've always withdrawn money from foreign ATMs for a better rate than you'll get over the counter... they will normally charge a couple of quid - check with your bank who they have the best deals with in Foreign.... of course if you've already done it, ignore this...

Time is now of the essence, Mrs W has been burning my ears about packing my reply was " as long as the dinner suit is packed" did not go down too well, I'm now playing Peter Frampton " Lines on my face" very loud don't think thats going done too well either, mainly because she hates Peter Framton, some people.
Still I think the packing is going extremely well, Little W's now in the bath shouting whats that rubbish you're playing can you put Miley Cirrus on, two against one again.
Just one and a bit sleeps to go, talk about pressure I have all the important stuff to do, finish off the skis tomorrow morning, pack the skis and boots,pack the car,book the flight seats on line ,take the cat to the cat hotel, Little W has a party tomorrow afternoon and then my time, the mighty Fulham will be giving a football lesson to a team from Manchester, I don't know who they are .
And the day which we have been waiting for for weeks arrives, depart Norfolk 03.00am for four days of heaven, it does not really get much better, does it ??

Just a quick last check of emails, weather forecast and my friends on J2 ski before I head off to pack for my early morning departure to Soll . Another fall of snow forecast for this evening so conditions should be pretty good . Just hope the roads are ok and that the sun comes out to shine on all the lovely snow - unfortunately, the forecast is for more light snow showers over the next couple of days but as long as the lifts are open and visibility is half reasonable, I will be one happy bunny

Amanda, if you land at 11.00am, assume get away by 12.00 noon, normal transfer about two hours, but this depends on the drop-offs. So arrive Schneeburger, 2.00/2.30 pm.

Lift pass, if you buy a pass at the lift office from Sunday for 6 days, it will be operable from 3.00pm Saturday. If you have pre-booked, I don't see why this should be any different. But then, you need to actually have the pass, and sometimes the reps want to deliver them at breakfast, or late afternoon.

hopfgarten we got them from rep soon as we got to hotel at xmas, we had the female rep whose normal resort was niederau from crystal so might be same girl again. will you be waiting with a nice cup of hot tea at 2.30 lol does schneeberger have its own ski lockers wondering where to store the boots and skis for a week, just had the snow report looks like sun and snow all week great

But thank you I have just finished the ski prep, the air was blue I nicked my thumb on the ski when I was scrapping off the wax, luckily Little W was no where to be seen, got away with that one.
We depart Heathrow at 08.55 so we intend to depart Norfolk at appox 03.00am Sunday morning, I shall be in touch with the forum if I can get a Wi fi link at the hotel, they have confirmed a wi fi connection but you never know if it works. Snow looks great and the weather looks fine for our journey with snow on Sunday evening, so all set for a fantastic few days, I'm all excited.

had to reply when i knew you were leaving narwich at 3 am. i run catering trailers at portman road ipswich and we have a market there on a sunday morning so any time after 0600 hrs you would have been welcome to a freebie cup of cha and a bacon roll to help you and your family on your way to adelboden , i think that is where you are off 2 .

I went skiing on Sunday,It was sooooo COLD!!!! at the top of the mountain it was about -25.. even colder with a windchill. Im a Canadian ...grew up in Alberta...so I dont get cold very often ha ha ha ....but my face was paining it was so cold ...and it was covered! Sitting on the lift was nasty!!

Heading up in a couple days over spring break,but thankfully it is warming up tomorrow.

Off to Nendaz on 21st and already booked for Montgenevre Jan 2010. OH is doing his best to keep me from booking another for Mar 2010 - he seems to like some sort of spontaneity to his jollies but that leaves way too much to chance in my book! I am now officially a grumpy old lady, who will only travel from a local airport at a reasonable time of day, wants a certain standard of facilities, preferably ski in/ski out and within 2 hours of resort airport - not to mention decent slopes and lift system,
and all for 2s 6d. (told you I was old...)

You and me both with that list of preferences, although it never quite seems to work out exactly like that, especially if you want to pay ****er all.

I was in Verbier late march last year, so you should enjoy Nendaz. Make sure you get up to Siviez and Tortin and over to the higher slopes above Verbier, theres some fantastic skiing there.

I have noted quite a few people heading to MontG these days. Not a great resort IMO, but very close to lots of other places. The snow there was sensational when I went through on the bus on Sunday.

A yurt is a tent type home that people in say, Mongolia, live in.
They are like a mobile home...they move on and take them down and then set them up where they settle.

I know this coz my brother went on one of those charity cycle rides and was invited to eat in one.

There is also a company in the Alps that does Yurt evenings..and that might be what Pablo is referring to!!!!

There's a campsite in dorset that has yurts. In fact I think they are quite a common occurence in various places in the UK these days.

just back from the best week skiing i have been on in val claret tignes

this was my 4 time skiing havin been to torgon/swiss hautlac/ swiss and alpe dhuez/france and tignes

have to say it was great from the hotel to the kids club to the ski hire and loads of slopes to do as well

very impressed

the location of the hotel and town/village was great freindly and slopes was plenty for all.

then u could ski over to val d`sere were there was plenty to do there was the two olympic runs which were cool to do scary but cool

the hotel i could not complain about from freindly staff to kids club would go out of there way for our kids.

the choice of food was great too self service type with plenty too choice from.

from the hotle u had a ski lift facing you too take you far and bout 4-5 ski lifts that take u differnt runs from blu/red/black the snow was great

I came back from St Anton in January and 'wanted to go again' - so I am - leaving home at 2.30 in the morning for a 6.30 flight to Turin and on to Sauze d'Oulx. Just time to get my had down for a few hours. Bit worried about the lack of new snow and freeze/thaw conditions, but snow depths seem ok, although probably icy.

Off to Val Cenis on Saturday, my first time skiing. I' m so excited, my 9 year old tells me I'm too excited! Though he's quite excited at the idea of seeing snow again. Can't believe that I've got to the age of fourty-something without trying it before!

remember if at first you fall - get up dust the snow off, laugh and try again

I've got 11 months to go before my next ski holiday, but only 3 months before my mini holiday to the Manchester snow dome. And maybe I'll fit in another snow dome holiday at some time before we go to France, so that the wait won't be quite so unbearable.

I would factor in somewhere between 10% and 20% more distance than it tells you also, I am guessing it calculates on known slope length, which unless you ski directly down the centre will likely be an underestimate.

I have toyed with this idea, as it is cheaper. I am unconvinced it is less hassle however. Most policies ask questions about health over 12 months, this is not a static answer. If you fall over and break your ribs in week one (and dont make a claim) you are obliged to tell your insureror and have your policy updated. Last year I had several out patient visits to have minor operation on a finger for something completely out of the scope of skiing, I have to declare all of this each time. So unless you never see a doctor in a 12 month period the information on your policy becomes innacurate at some point, potentially leading to loss of cover (at worst) and endless expensive phonecalls to keep yourself covered (at best).

I agree with all of what you write, which is correct if you desire that your existing conditions are included in your policy.
Our household decided to drop "existing conditions cover" this time round, as we thought (and so did you) that maintaining this was a PITA.
I have been skiing since 1983 and have yet to have a pre-existing condition force the curtailment of a ski trip. Never say never, of course, it's a very personal thing, but we feel it's a reasonable risk to take based on our circumstances.

The issue I see with dropping existing conditions cover, is the possibility they tie an existing condition to an incident on the hill which by most by reasonable peoples standards, is totally unrelated. I am a little paranoid about insurance to be honest. This being said you would think I remembered it a little more frequently.

I got my ski insurance as a one off from the post office. As far as I remember, as long as you hadn't recently been to hospital, or had something like a major heart condition, you didn't have to tell them anything about past medical history. Of course, I haven't claimed on it yet, so I don't know if I might come unstuck over some small print somewhere. And I made sure it covered ski-ing.

I worry about insurance as well - you read these cases in the paper where the insurance company wriggles out of paying up for the most unfair reasons.

I'm shattered, I went to the ski shop in St Albans today and found nothing so, obviously disappointed, I thought I'd pop up to Ellis Brigham in MK seeing as I was so close to the M1. A waste of time for me, I couldn't find what I wanted at all (a nice fitted white jacket at a bargain price). Quite a lot of stuff in there though and I got to watch the skiers for 10 mins to whet my appetite

Still, going out for a meal tonight should cheer me up - 23 years ago today mr a uttered the words "will you go out with me" .

Just an observation, but I found it very difficult picking out people wearing white jackets on the slopes, not that there were many of them. It was bad enough with Mrs H's white sallos, but jackets???
I dont know of many people who make plain white ladies fitted ones, although I would expect Kjus and Eider probably do, and I have defo seen white North Face ones.
Have you looked in Blacks, as they have got good sales on skiwear?

I was going for the chic look, what with my black fitted salo's that the group bought for me last year. I did try a North Face one but it was too short in the arms (don't ask!).

But after all that, it's occurred to me that I wouldn't be able to wear tinted moisturiser while I was wearing it would I. Girly I know but slightly important

So now, I'm back to square one, what colour to pick

My daughter wears white trousers and a white jacket with a small amount of red in it, and a brown and pink ski hat, and I have no trouble picking her out on the piste, even when she's miles ahead of me, and she looks pretty smart as well (her make-up matches too!).

I very nearly ended up with a dress like that for my mate's wedding. Unfortunately, the one I ended up with may have been ruined by the dry cleaners! (there's no appropriate smilie for how I feel about that!).

Wickers....Les Collons is quite a big resort by comparison, part of the Verbier system and quite a distance away Was that recently?, I saw one UK agent was offering places with the Swiss version of Leaseback, under which you get a couple of weeks in the winter and a couple in the summer.

Grimentz must be incredibly small as when I visited Les Collons I thought it was quite a small place, I thought it was quite a pleasant place I even had lunch there, I suppose it was was three or four years ago.
The property were a bunch of refurbished apartments and chalets and yes it was on a lease back, which would always put me off investing, but a bolt hole does appeal, maybe one day

I am ski-ing on the glacier at Tignes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week, during half-term. I hope there is some real snow, as well as the artificial stuff, and my cold goes away.

I also hope I can still get into my ski trousers. I have eaten rather a lot over the summer holidays and my tummy has become fairly round. Otherwise I will have to buy/rent/borrow some bigger ones.

Hi Tony,
Well, I have had to put up with being jealous of everyone else, for ages, because normally we only go ski-ing once per year, and some people here seem to ski loads of times per season.

I am a bit worried about the weather. It's bucketing down rain here at the moment, and I have a nasty feeling that if it rains/snows at Tignes, it will be rain all the way up to whatever height the ski-ing starts. I haven't tried my ski clothes (assuming I can get them on) in rain before - suppose I get soaking wet? I mean snowflakes just land on top of you and you can brush them off and they don't seem to soak in.

Anyway, I will hope for the best, and let everyone know how I got on when I get back.
