footbed?

Have just aquired some almost new salamon boots courtesy of ebay. They are a pretty good fit but need some insoles. I've looked at various websites offering various footbeds costing around 35 quid. Seems like qiute a lot of cash for what it is, can anyone recommend a particular type/brand and are they really worth buying?
Any advice appreciated...

Re:footbed?

The simplest, good quality, over the counter footbed is by Superfeet. Trim to fit. Blue or Green depending on your volume needs.

Thanks Bandit,...my boots have plenty of space so the higher volume ones would be best.
Are they worth GBP35 though?

Re:footbed?

That depends on how much you value your feet. I have Superfeet footbeds in all my shoes, and the Custom moulded Full Kork version in my ski boots. Same goes for my OH, and they cost a wee bit more than GBP35

Re:footbed?

Hi

Saw your question and just had to reply. For what it is worth I am a qualified ski instructor, this is no big deal of course but I am just mentioning it so that you can appreciate that at the very least I am a very keen skier have have a lot of skiing experience and so perhaps it could be argued that I have some idea of what I am talking about.

Anyway, over the years I have been sold/recommended/sucked into buying special customised insoles 3 times (including Superfeet) when I have bought new ski boots. Each and every time they have felt fine in the shop but when I have skied on them they have been a nightmare and stopped the cirulation in my feet. Needless to say that each time I have gone back to the original insoles and they have been absolutely fine. Each time I promise myself I will never buy them again and this time I really mean it. My friend also had the same problem with his new ski boots so I suggested he try putting the original insole back in and he was also immediately comfortable.

It should also be remembered that shops make more money if they can also sell insoles when selling ski boots.

No doubt other other people have different experiences but if I were you I would just get ordinary bog standard insoles first and see if they are comfortable and if so then there is no need on spending more money.

Either way, good luck.

Of course they make more money if they sell more services/items. If a bus company sells more tickets, they make more money..

Do you mind me asking where you have been fitted for these in the past? I had properly fitted footbeds (custom made efforts) and the difference in the boot fit was unreal (Salomon Falcon Race)

Re:footbed?

I have just found these, has anyone tried these heat mouldable ones?

Ski shops try to sell us as much as they can, and for those of us on a budget it's nice to know whether we really need these 'extras' or not.
The guy in the ski shop was trying to sell me the boots (GBP175) and he said that the footbeds (GBP37) were necessary because my feet 'needed' them!
As it happened, i went home, searched ebay, and found the same boots (used twice) which a got for GBP60. I'm happy with the boots but do have some issues. The
main one being that after wearing the boots around the house a bit i have discovered that they are particularly tight on the 'boney bits' sticking out on the insides of my ankles. I'm not sure how to fix this, without cutting a hole in the shell of the boots!

337

Your choices are perhaps, to either "blow" the shell yourself, or find a boot fitter willing to make the necessary mods. It may be that your foot needs to be lifted/or lowered in the boot to resolve the problem.

If bootfitting was an unneccesary luxury, we'd all buy our kit off e-bay

I have a couple of pairs of these. Not a fully moldable footbed, but the arch support does mold and continues to adjust a little with use. They are rigid enough to take wedges underneath to correct your stance if needed. I would say they are like superfeet, but with a moldable arch support.

I picked mine up on line for $20 a pair, so good for the price if you can get a deal.

Trencher

Bandit, i will see how they feel once i get a footbed in them. By 'blowing' do you mean heating the area and moulding the plastic shell out a bit?

trenchy...$20 is a good price....unfortunately i cant find any that cheap in the uk.

are they worth the money ?...YES
are they correct for you? well that depends on the boot the foot and the fit between the two, without seeing your feet it is impossible to say

i would love to know where the ski instructor who posted earlier has his boots done, my money would be that he needs more than just a moulded footbed or at least more than a badly moulded footbed...again without seeing his feet impossible to say what will work best, but there are not too many people out there who will not benefit in some way from a well made footbed or an off the peg one. i offer a 100% money back guarantee on all the custom beds i make, i see on avaerage 1 pair back a month and i build over 700 pairs a year for all sports footwear, ski boots and day to day shoes

badly made footbeds are definately not worth the money a suitable well made one is a valuable part of the ski boot fit

Re:footbed?

I have posted on here before about long standing problems with my boots and in particular my right foot!! Crushing, pins and needles sensation after about 2-3 hours wearing them. Suprise suprise it happened again the beginning of last week in Mayrhofen where I again was having to take my boot off every 2 hours or so just for a minute to relieve the discomfort and then suffered for about 30 seconds pins and needles when the blood returned to the rest of the foot.
Cem this seeemd to stop after about the 4th day, now was it my foot had just given up trying to tell me I was damaging it, or could it have been the fact that I had to loads of walking in Mayrhofen to the gondollas and chalet there with the damn things on that even though the boots are 3 years old that I have finally broken in the foot beds to the proper shape of my foot. I keep my fingers crossed that this is the case as I am off back to Austria for a cheeky week at the end of January!!

footbed?

it doesn't suprize me if this was the first days in the boot this season, most people wear loose fitting shoes for 50 weeks of the yearthen put their ski boots on and the feet need to get used to the feel, wearing them round the house can help to aclimatise the foot but the true solution is to spend much much more time skiing

Thanks Cem, yes, very worrying indeed! They are pale blue wedges that obviously tilt the heel inwards, towards the inside of the boot. The previous owner must've had strange shaped feet and enormously fat calves as the buckles were adjusted to the outer holes! I have now put these back to the original position, and removed wedges and installed the new footbeds. Certainly feels more comfortable and i have 7 weeks now in which to get used to them before my ski trip.
Do you know if i should heat up the whole boots a little to get that 'custom fit'?

I have seen cem heat up boot shells and liners separately. He uses a special oven for the shells and what looks like a fan heater for boots liners.
Then he works very fast to get it all back together and the owners feet in the boots!. I would say that this is not a job for the faint hearted or unskilled hands. I "think" that the liner moulding is also activated by foot heat, but takes longer.

footbed?

apologies for the delay, been busy and skiing...... heating the shells will help them to mould quickly if not just wearing them will do the trick

Re:footbed?

Just my 2 pence but I use superfeet insoles. Compared to the default they just added extra support to the arch of my feet and helped a lot, no circulation problems at all. Trying them on in the shop will give you a little idea but the only real test is after a full day of skiing.

So if your feet need more arch support than what the default gives, get better insoles.
