Dolomites/Val Gardena region

Has anyone been to this area recently, in particular Arabba, Selva, Ortisei, Canazei, Val di Fassa, Val Gardena areas?

Its being considered for a future trip. Looking for somewhere with some nightlife, good snow record, mixture of slopes with some nice easy blues as well as more difficult reds to go at within easy reach. The Sella Ronda looks like it might be the prefect kind of area to me, but would welcome input on various places they may have tried.

Many thanks

Re:Dolomites/Val Gardena region

Went to Val di Fassa this february half term!
We stayed in the pozza area which was very quiet to be honest!
I had some great advantages like the fact that when skiing in that area we didn't cue for a single lift! And i mean literally not a single!
The first day we arrived at the gondola base at about 9 and there was nobody else there in the lift cue! It was fantastic! It also meant obviously that the slopes were empty!
The downside could be seen that there isn't much nightlife but that didn't bother our group as were in the hotel every evening!

From Pozza i skied upto the marmolada and the val gardena area! I enjoyed both these days especially the marmolada trip which was essentially non-stop skiing from about 8.30 till 5.30!

It is very easy to access the gardena area from pozza in two ways! One is to get the free skibus to campitello and ski over or start skiing at pozza at the buffaurae (sp) gondola and ski over to alba then taking the 5 minute bus ride down to canazei and then gondola up, down to the canazei/campitello crossover and gondola to the top of campitello then ski down into selva etc!

I very much enjoyed the area it has some stunning and miles upon miles of runs.
the snow wasn't fantastic when we were there and it was quite warm! I am also lead to believe that the area doesn't receive as good snow as other areas of the alps but i think i would definetly go back again!

Chris

Here's a link to show how empty the "pozza" slopes are!

http://s337.photobucket.com/albums/n376/skiareas/Italy/Val%20di%20Fassa/?action=view&current=IMG_1808.jpg
yes it was fantastic!

The slopes were like that everyday and i think that photo was taken on a sunday mid morning so one of the peak times!

It is obviously busier over in canazei and campitello but was lovely!

Stayed in Canazei 3 years ago, fantastic trip, the Sella Ronda is well worth a visit.
Best area I'd say was Arabba/Marmolada, closely followed by Selva and Val Gardena.
The scenery is simply breathtaking.
The scenery is stunning and the skiing is excellent. We stayed in Corvara. German is widely spoken in this area. You can see the mountain caves where the Italians and Germans faced each other during the first World War!

Re:Dolomites/Val Gardena region

The history is fascinating, the area was Austrian until after WWI.
10,000 soldiers were killed by avalanches (many set off deliberately) during the winter of 1916 alone. This was just as much the front line as the trenches of France and Belgium and just as brutal. Such a stark contrast to the breathtaking beauty of the area.
Re:Dolomites/Val Gardena region

Have stayed in Arabba. So features I recall:

Beautiful rock formations, many just off your piste.

Sella Ronda makes for an easy day trip, stopping off at a different village for coffee, lunch, etc. And then do it the other way round and it is totally different.

May be a generalisation, but I viewed the Italians as having the worst slope discipline outside of snowboarders. (I said it once, and I think I got away with it!)

But if you have children, Italy is the place to be.

The year we were there was a bad year for Eurosnow, and the Sella was a white artificial strip of sugar.

Made a mental note that the Sella Ronda would make a great summer walking holiday.

Re:Dolomites/Val Gardena region

Make sure you ski the Saslong (Mens downhill run) in Val Gardena, it's one of those runs which makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up on end. The rollers which you see the skiers going airborn off on tv are huge and make you glad you're not racing the clock!

The womans downhill (or might be super GS) run in Arabba is also a great run.

i was in santa christina (Val gardena) last year booked my accomodation through www.valgardena.it - put your dates in and it is sent to all hotels, appartments in the resort and all available accomodation will get back to you i had plenty of choice - you can also get a terravision bus from bergamo airport to ortisei, santa christina or selva it stops in the 3 resorts.

This year was in alba di canzei and booked through fassa.com and again plenty of choice for accomodation, would recommend either of these areas the scenery is stunning the sella ronda is a great way to see arraba, covara etc.

Re:Dolomites/Val Gardena region

I stayed in Val Di Fassa but skied over to Marmolada. Its a great trip to do, took all day there and back. Theres the sella ronda circuit which runs around the sella ronda. You can go clockwise or anti-clockwise. I didn't do this as was with a snowboarder and he's lazy! Would love to go back there great for beasting the miles out. At the end of you holiday you can go on the dolomites website and put your pass number in and it tells you the distance you covered and you study each day's progress! Lovely area with beautiful scenery!

Re:Dolomites/Val Gardena region

If you think of the Sella Ronda as the face of clock, coming off at 2 is the Alta Badia area, at 5 Arabba area leading to Marmolada. 7 Canazei and 10 Selva, Val Gardena and St Cristina.

The circuit can be done in either direction, intermediate skiers will be able to get round in a day, just watch the time when you're off the circuit in one of the linked areas.

I stayed in Canazei, which was a bit of a trek to the more demanding skiing in Arabba or Selva, so if I went back I stay in one of those resorts.

Marmolada is the highest peak in the area at 3350m. I remember it being -25c up there!

Re:Dolomites/Val Gardena region

Well the Dolomites we go to every year we just change resort. Fantastic beauty and skiing is just so vast you can travel for miles and miles. This year we will go to Arabba again, not big on nightlife but fantastic skiing and more restaurants than it used to but its not big apres ski. We tend to sit eat and drink at night more than anything. We also do a great night toboganning which is such a laarf all of us on wooden things with no lights but the moon to guide us - usually a few injuries but fun. Check out www.simplydolomiti.com our friend Sue will fill you in

From Pozza Di Fassa it appears that its roughly a 45km round trip!

My total for the week was 206km's however if it wasn't for my snowboarding bud i would have done much much more!

Edit,,,

I have just noticed that when you put in your lift pass if you look at the map, it shows in which order you rode the lifts, it shows a picture moving up the lift showing which order you did it in!
Hi there
I live in Arabba and Santa Cristina, Val Gardena. I can recommend both for variety of pistes, good snow, good food and great value for money. With regards to nightlife and apres bars I think Val Gardena would be a better choice, Arabba has just a few bars but is within easy access to Corvara which has one very lively apres venue. I organise holidays to a number of resorts around the Sella Ronda, please check website www.simplydolomiti.com
Ciao Sue

Flights are 06:30 from Manchester so you need to be there an hour before. Dont forget to pack your tooth brush

Out there two years ago, great ski safari circle around the mountain. It is a large interconnected ski area, you can go clockwise or anti-clockwise, but need to start early in the day.

Also suggest you go and see a ice hockey match, great fun, they even have a " drum band" to add to the atmosphere.

Derek

Re:Dolomites/Val Gardena region

Hi,

I was looking at this area too - Selva- in particular. Comes highly recommended by a friend of mine. Great scenery, hotel, food, etc. Ski area looks massive but I'm a bit concerned that it's easy flat stuff. My friend is a beginner so I'm not too sure about her judgement on this. Myself and the missus have been skiing since we we're kids, i'd say were adventurous intermediates. We reckon Selva ticks all the boxes except we're just wondering if Selva will have enough challenging slopes. Any intermediate/expert out there with an opinion on this?
