Prescription skiing glasses help....anyone.....

Does anyone know of a good brand/shop who can do prescription sunglasses for skiing? I have a strong prescription, and my optician tells me Oakley don`t do a lense to suit my prescription. In the past i have just used my normal sunnies for skiing, but these are really not suitable. I need to get a decent pair or wrap arounds if possible. Any help appriciated....

Hi

I know that you can get prescription Adidas ski-glasses, as a family member has some. The prescription bit pops out if you don't want to use it all the time and you are left with a damn fine pair of sunnies.

Expect to pay around GBP220.00 I think.

Hope this helps.

If you have a strong prescription then many of the wrap styles of sunnies cannot be made with a prescription lens, as you will get too much distortion. Instead you can get a clip in for sunnies like these:
http://www.rxsport.co.uk/RX/Pages/selectcategory.aspx?categoryName=Adidas&categoryType=Brands&?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=CPC

I have a pair and they are quite tough. Alternatively get some decent goggles that can go over glasses.

Oakley do excellent prescription sunglasses and can be ordered from most opticians. And they look cool.

Re:Prescription skiing glasses help....anyone.....

Thanks for the quick replies guys. i`ll see what Adidas can do. I`m not fussed about the cost really, as they`ll be used twice a year, and are pretty important

I thought i`d be struggling with the wrap around ones to be fair, i`ve been to my opticians, and Oakley don`t even do a lense strong enough for me! Maybe new eyes altogether is the way to go.....

I`ve just emailed RX Sport, and they sdaid exactly what you said. I might be acting stupid, but i can`t imagine an insert fitting on the inside of a pair of glasses! Are they not obstructive at all, and won`t it just look like you`re wearing 2 pairs of glasses? Sorry, probably a daft question, suppose i really need to go and see them for myself....

I also switch lenses to suit the conditions. I find the yellow ones quite good in low light. Click on the image then use the zoom to see what I mean.

Hi Rob,

I have evolved several solutions. I am short sighted, but can read clearly. Normally wear varifocals. Solutions:

Wrap round dark sunglasses, Specsavers GBP60 ~ in fixed short sight lens only, but this is OK for skiing, I only need to see the next turn. Wear these 98% of the time. OK in snow conditions, unless really wet snow.

Wide goggles over normal glasses. Old solution, no longer used. Available from ski shops. Cheap

Goggles with internal clip-in spectacles. They work OK, but I rarely wear them. GBP90 ish

Clip-in inserts into wrap round cycling-type sunglasses. Five different colour lenses. Normally only wear for biking. Under GBP100.

Last two available as specials from most spectacle shops.
I thought about the goggles, but would need to wear them all the time, so that really rules them out for me.

Just out of interest, anyone who uses the clip-in inserts, do you ever have any trouble with fogging up?

To avoid fogging up problems, I use Hilco Fog Buster, from this supplier..
http://www.gosportspex.com/ZeroFog.asp

Your prescription is not so high, really

If you do go for the Adidas shades, may I suggest that once you have them, that you go visit a high street optician and buy the toughest metal case that will fit them. I broke my Adidas plastic case this year and I've not been able to replace it, so I went for a big spectacles case instead. I also carry a spare pair of specs with me at all times...just in case of mishap!

He solved it by switching to disposable contact lens and wearing what goggles or sun glasses he likes.
Unfortunatly, contacts are a no no for me. i`ve had a cornia graft, so the only lense i could wear would be a hard gas perm. one. I`ve tried this in the past, and it`s just not worth the hassle!

I`ve also found a frame that would work with my prescription. I`m quite liking the idea of the Adidas ones though. Thanks for all the help again.

over here (Switzerland) you can walk into one of the chain optical places like Visilab and get new glasses in a couple of hours, the last pair I had were some Bolle, they take out the stock lens and make one up. They can take the prescription from your existing glasses. As Bandit says, that only works for certain strengths. It's cheap though, obviously there's a high demand for decent glasses and lenses here.

I do like your shades, though your prescription is clearly much weaker than mine (for example). Some of the issues for optical lens makers are:

*Curvature of the frame/lens causing distortion
*Insufficient depth in the frame to fix a high Index lens
*Frame manufacturers only supplying stock Index lens blanks machined to fit their frames, and labs have insufficient volume to tool up for making others.

Visilab are elsewhere in Europe as well AFAIK
Re:Prescription skiing glasses help....anyone.....

Hi simonsnowboarder, welcome to J2ski Unfortunately your prescription fields on your site don't go high enough to match my prescription. I do have Adidas E.E. Explorers with an insert though, which work just fine.

Mostly I wear goggles with glasses. I use Oakley L Frames, and this winter will try the Sinner Beast II.
