Already a "clarification" for item 6.

Since several "questions" were raised on issue by persons working in industry!

The question relates NOT to first ski lift and where it was installed but rather to the "conception" ,,the inspiration of the idea of a ski lift!
Where did this idea of "towing skiers up a hill" come from?

Now if you really want to impress everyone ,,,give me the name of the person who proposed this means of moving skiers!
No extra points will be given, however!

Well perhaps a free beer at the annual J2SKI end of year party!

Pavel,

Please could I ask for some further clarification?

Once a post is made will you be providing a total mark for that post? I understand you wouldn't want to mark each question individually but a total mark might make it more interesting for the rest of us to try and guess which questions gained the marks?

Thanks,

Jan,
I will give total mark for each posted reply!

At end of quizz I will post complete answers and declare the winner!

I do have to mention to all that it is very important to read all the words in the question! As in all quizes ot tests each word has specific meaning or "guides" the person to the answer! It is like looking at clues in the forest for the path to take! That broken branch to the uninitiated is just a broken branch but to the "knowledgeable" person it leads to the path! So please read each word carefully!

Perhaps my "clarification" post may help some of you find the path! The broken branch is there! Lift up your gaze and look for it!

Re:SKI Racing Glove Questions Are IN!!!! (sleepless nights are coming)

I’m new on j2ski but needed a break from writing up 3 years worth of lab work and so decided to give this quiz a try, despite knowing pretty much NOTHING about skiing other than what I learnt in my 1st week earlier this year! Little did I know that I would spend hours searching the internet for answers instead of working!

So I know my answers may seen ridiculous to most of you on here who actually know what they are talking about but if I don’t submit my answers now I’m going to keep trying to find the answers on the internet and my thesis is NEVER going to get finished, and plus I don’t have to worry about giving answers away, coz there are people who know waaaay more than me on here….so although the answers are probably laughable to most of you…here goes!

1: Honestly don’t know, did I mention I know nothing about skiing (yet), except that I love it?

2: Same again….

3: All made with Fibreglass?

4: Something to do with Vibration Dampening technology?

5: Finally one Google can help me with:
Heavenly (over the Nevada, California border)
Portes du Soleil (over the French, Swiss border)

6: I think it was based on a design of a mini-hydroelectric/water mill in the hotel of Robert Winterhalden, the transmissions gave him the idea of towing skiers up a hill!

7: I think this is how you calculate the flex of a ski? If it is then Y would represent the flex of the ski

8: This one I was completely stuck on, Google doesn’t help with numbers, the only thing I had to go on was a previous competition on here about the 5 magic numbers every skier should know…….but I pretty sure they don’t match up but I’m going to say that’s what they are anyway (although I’m not sure what order they should be in!!!)

DIN settings, Ski length, Turning radius, Sidecut, Mark-up price

9: Again, I’m new to this (that’s my excuse for my ignorance) but I’m going to hazard a guess….don’t laugh to much if they are ridiculous!!!

Lightweight ‘non-wood’ skis…not exactly a ‘new’ invention I know but…
Shaped skis
‘Fat’ skis

10: I have absolutely no idea, Google let me down on this too….the only thing I could find was a North American Alpine event that the top level skiers attended because the World Cup championships in Spain had been cancelled so the North American and Canadian ski teams went to train and compete in, even though it’s usually attracts the ‘B’ level team members…..
I realise this is still a competition so doesn’t answer the question, but I spent so long trying to find the answer that I had to put SOMETHING to justify it to myself!

Well, like I said I had to submit this now so that I can get back to writing up instead of searching Google for the answers, the title of the thread doesn’t quite fit for me….it should have read ‘workless days’ instead of ‘sleepless nights’!

1. Its an old piece of Lego from the 70s which you cant use anymore because of the sloping single holes on the outside. You used to be able to connect them to the old Lego sets.

2. This is a set of stocks once used by Professor Yaffle on Bagpus, when Charlie Mouse was particularly badly behaved when Emily brought home a condom, and Charlie Mouse thought it was a mouse raincoat.

3. None of them have been used by Basil Brush.

4. He put a Seat engine on them to make them go faster (system Porsche - you see it written on old Seat Ibiza's). Jeez, they could move....

5. I know this one: Vialattea and The Milky Way :D

6. To get you up the mountain.

7. X is the amount of beer you should drink in a week at home, but divided by 2 is the amount of beer you should drink whilst having some apres ski. Therefore, half the normal amount of beer is Y, and this is important because if you exceed Y, you are buggered for the next days skiing. This is not recommended, except of course on the day of arrival in resort when no one cares about anything except the next drink.

8. Its the padlock combination number to the ski locker I used in Verbier in March, and without it I couldnt get my skis out.

9. Ipod, Mobile Phone, Red Salopettes

10. I reckon that was that mad night you were on about when all those people turned up on that wild goose chase and had such a great time at that lovely resort that you won't tell us the name of. It had something to do with consuming ridiculous amounts of alcohol I believe. Surprisingly.

What do I win?

Gordieski,
Welcome to the wonderful world of skiing.

Welcome now to the world of real skiers who are so fanatic that in the Summer they do these crazy mind twisting quizzes just to "keep skiing alive" in the mind!

Also congratulations for being the first person to have tried to answer all the questions.
Your score is 1/10 ,,however you did get some answers very close to "target"

You have also discovered the "weaknesses" of Google and all internet search engines! You have to know what to ask! In other words you must have some "basic knowledge" of the subject matter! The first two items Google can not yet "compute" them ,,unless you work for CIA or such agencies!

The numbers are not numbers! It is the relationship and order which is meaningful to all "knowledgeable" skiers! I know that at least Mike, Ellistine and even Jan are going to slap themselves on the forehead if they do not get this item! They just have to think and get away from Google!

Great first try Gordie!

As always I make silly mistakes that may cause 'problems" so please accept this "clarification.
I stated, "the numbers are not numbers......"

What I meant to state is, "The numbers IN THEMSELVES are not that important. It is their relationship to each other and their placement or order that is important" That will give away the answer!

It is that knowledge of the order and the relationships which separates the "real skier fanatic" from the weekend skier!

Once you get it,,,,you will all say, """"ha,,,,, yes yes so easy,,so clear"!!!

Tony, Tony, Tony,,,,I have so much to tell you! Do you have a "minute"?

As I read your answers I tried to "project" who you are, what you looked like..and how you ski!!!

Your answers were, "entertaining". imaginative, creative and unique! They provided me ( and I am sure many other readers) much "laugther"!
Please keep up imaginative messages!

Now for the bad news!
0/10 score!

However, I can not let this type of imaginative responce go by without some form of recognition,,,,so unless we get better "imaginative answers" Tony I will be sending you a "special" prize! Just send me via your PM your address etc,,,, You will wear it with pride as you ski! When other skiers ask you how you got this "unique" item,,,you can say,,,,,,,,,

Thanks for all answers!

Sleepless nights indeed .... and not just form this set of questions. It has been so hot and humid at night here that the nights are sleepless.

This is a difficult set of questions and I thought the Lego block answer was pretty good :!: It wouldn't be the first time that Pavel had adapted something complete unrelated to skiing into being a main tool for tuning or buckle fastening.

I too haven't yet given proper consideration to coming up with a set of answers ... and now I see that Pavel says we will be once more slapping our foreheads :!: :!: . But Pavel, the headaches are just about gone from the forehead slapping from the last time.

One thing that came to mind when reading the questions was the common use of layered kevlar in some ski bases as with some sports car construction. (Just a guess.)

But numbers have come back to bite us again. Hmmmmm ... and not on google??? I'm in trouble then

I must settle down and give some serious thought to what Lego could be used for in skiing....

I do remember a "certain" ski tuning course you attended when all this was discussed! (Well most of it)!!!

I can not help to help you "engineers" since you are so close! Think,,,what do F1 cars, Stealth bombers and skis have in common as far as primary goals!

Yes yes you got it....to be at the "fine point" of product changes,,,, using new technological materials to make the final product better, faster, ligther, stronger, etc....

So sorry about "getting you away" from work and serious studies! Let me make you a bet. 20 years from now what will you remember? What will you use?

I bet you will remember all the answers to this fun quiz since many will help you ski better! Also I am sorry to tell you this but you are now "addicted"! You will sneak by every so often to check what "others" are answering! You now have a personal stake!
That thesis is for others, for that paper,,,these questions and their answers is for you!( the future expert skier)! So when you will use those numbers, and your son asks you how come you know them by heart, you will smile and remember this quiz!

By the way, the shortest Ph.d thesis was one line! An equation to determine Factorial Analysis using varimax rotation! It took a book to explain what the equation meant!

Tony,
I only wish! I often make mistakes, like the time I "assumed" a young lady on this site was a man, but I try to learn from my mistakes! Thus not repeat them!

There is a whole new way of considering learning,,,,real learning in which central concept is the learner! You retain "terms, concepts" when it pertains to you! Your image, your success, your performance! When you do it for others,,,,,for that school mark, that Phd. etc,,,you forget much after three weeks!

Since Gordie is "addicted" he will soon want to become a better skier! He will soon read all about skiing! Then he will buy videos!
Then of course the ski classes will begin!

Then like Elistine, summer skiing on plastic.

Then like Jan and Bandit move to a place where you can ski.

Of course he will look for a spouse who MUST also ski

The final stage of this addiction is flying down to "south" to ski all Summer in New Zealand or Chile!

Be warned Gordie!

Hi Jacqui!

Welcome and well done for taking the most important step, admitting your addiction :)

As for you Pavel - My nights were spent in splendid perfection until this ridiculous list of questions turned up! I just wish I could post half of the answers I have considered but I don’t think Mr Admin’s server would handle the volume

So in the spirit of Jacqui’s admission, I too must confess … “I am addicted to Pavel’s quiz”

By the way did I miss the announcement of the closing date?

Now then where was I, 3 67 48 255 7 …

Or in other words, "why do modern skis "carve" so well?

Pavel... isn't it nice to see everyone excited because of your quiz!

To answer a couple of your unrelated questions ...

My shotgun is missing so I must offer a one (as per the rules of engagement)shot blast as close to the target(s) .. all 10 at once... as I can. No wonder the nights are sleepless. - so I am contemplating my reply very carefully.

"why do modern skis "carve" so well?

It is all in the flex due to structural alignment of the longitudinal fibers of the materials. That is to say the "softer" the ski the more radical the curve we can induce with applied pressure and therefore the fun whipping sensation of the carve. One of those magic numbers we should know which you listed. Another was our boot's sole length ... but I must put this in my final one time answer.

Don't be concerned Jan ... I am in the wings or maybe on the "wings of a dove" or whatever.

Has anyone else noticed that this quiz is one of Pavel's toughest quizzes?? Or maybe I am just in the lowest part of the non-snowy part of the ski season.

Just think how much learning we are all doing with this one :!:

That first picture isn't a Lego reject?? Or maybe a drill bit holder for the different screw sizes where a starter hole need be drilled.

Mike

Tony,
Are you aware of the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" produced by the APA?
It is a reference manual for all psychiatrists and psycholofist in trying to find the causes of mental problems!

In the Substance and Dependence section there are many "addictive" substances which I am sure you all know! Now there is a NEW section dealing with SKIING and the skiing addict!
Seems some bright psychologist has been reading various ski sites and determined that it is an addiction! ( as if we did not know that)!
Well serious work has been done in "folowing" the progress of this unique addiction! Seems it is more powerful than LSD, caffeine, Nicotine and yes Cannabis! It becomes a life long addiction
Tony if you have a chance read in "Abnormal Psychology" by David S. Holmes on page 463 there is a chart which relates personality types and addiction such as skiing.

Phase 4 is the phase which you are entering!
Do you;
plan your ski holidays in July
visit every ski shop as you travel
try to buy that 6th pair of skis
have long long dreams about skiing and wake up in a sweat
consider changing jobs so that you have more time skiing
wear you ski gloves while raking leaves,,just to "break in" gloves once you have spread non-toxic, animal friendly cream
begin wearning your ski boots in August
begin to make a list of friends that ski and that do not ski
think of buying a car with folding back seat for extra skis

If you have at least 9/10 symptoms,,,

When my wife tells me we are going to a party, it's always reassuring to know there will be some skiers/boarders there. Makes it much easier to avoid talking politics. My disdain for the current administration is not so controversial nowadays, but in the past it's made for some heated moments.

Dave, Bandit and Trencher,

Normality.....now we can have a great debate over that!

Seems psychiatrists do not consider thinking about skiing in June and July normal! Seems some people would consider people who are in front of a screen "chatting" about skiing in Summer,,well a bit bizzar!

Just warning Tony that soon he will have to explain to. mother, wife, father some things about his addiction! I know my parents thought I was a bit "nuts" going off in a blizzard at 5 AM! My wife initially thought it was "different" to sleep on top of a mountain (in winter) just to get first tracks. I know my boss found it strange that I did not accept a promotion ( with greater prestige, more money, car and more problems)!
So what id "normal"!!!!

Yes Bandit my reservations are made for Utah already!

I was not aware that you had to "wear in" ski socks! Mine come all ready "fitted"!

Caron, however your comment about socks allow me to pass along another tip.

This Summer I have discover a "secret" that many women know! Are you aware of these very thin socks that just go over ankles! Many women wear them for tennis or when the change from 3" shoes to running shoes when walking to work!

What does this have to do with skiing!

In my case after I ski hard for 4-5 days I get just below my ankle in the inside part a "raw" spot! It becomes sore and after one week of continuos skiing I can feel every set edge I do! I have learned to place a small square plaster/bandage in this area before hard long skiing!

These very thin short socks do wonders! I recommend them to racers and skiers who ski a great deal! Also in the Spring your boots get, "compressed". That is the inside foam becomes "thinner",, thus you feel that your feet are less "tight"! These socks also help get a better late skiing feel!
Try it.

Do you have cold weather in your area! I will wear my ski socks to see Sir Paul tonight!

I think it'd be more accurate to say that I'm wearing them "out" rather than "in", they're going to need replacing before my next trip!. They're just sooooo comfortable and I love them.

Finding how comfortable wool blend socks can be year round, is an expensive discovery. I prefer wool blend ankle socks in the summer though, as the ski socks get some funny looks when worn with shorts.

Your correct answer is one of the more difficult ones! You will have to tell me at the end how you got this answer!

Imagination score 10/10!

Your farmer answer is not far off! In North America the very first rope tow was put up by a farmer with a old Model T car motor, some pulleys and a long long old fashion hemp rope!
The most common ski injury at that time was dislocation of the shoulder due to beginer skiers holding to rope,,while they were dragged up hill!

Now for that nail polishing answer!!!! It could happen!

Do you know something about ski racers and their social activities that we do not? Birth is an important event,,but for ALL skiers,,I mean top level skiers to get together for longer than just a week and stay together......it must have been an "exceptional" birth!!!!!!

SKI Racing Glove Questions Are IN!!!! (sleepless nights are coming)

SKI Glove QUIZ

So here we are with less than two weeks left in the timed quiz.

The common thread through many of the questions is the importance of "shape" as my wordy answer will show.

I would like to offer the following in humble submission:

1.	What is its function and why is it that now in 2008 it is outdated and hardly ever used!

The Lego looking item is a "universal tuning tool " produced by Solomon or perhaps Snoli which is shown through its " S " shape. This item was to be used as a rough guide to determine the base and side cut angles. How it works would become obvious when we see the rest of the components that make up the whole tool.

2.	What is the function of this item ?

The function of this item is to grip an item used in the tuning process. Something like a brush or file. Gripping is done through the visible teeth.

3.What do F1 cars, stealth bombers and the modern ski have in common?
(just one word or sentence will do)

SHAPE!! Each item has a unique shape for its proper function. F-1 cars are streamlined for as frictionless motion through the air as possible. The shape of the Stealth Bomber is such to disrupt radar signals and confuse the reflection by scattering the signal. The Modern Ski is uniquely shaped to a parabola such that when placed on edge they carve with little effort in a predictable fashion.

4.How did F. Porsche’s innovative ideas make the modern ski better?
(one word or sentence will do)

The ideas produced a stronger material and when applied to the ski ... the ski maintaines a degree of flexibility to aid carving yet has strength to withstand great pressure from the skier.

5. List 2 ski resorts that are located in different countries/different states/different provinces!
That is, each ski resort geographically is shared by two “states” (country, state, province, county etc,,)

1. Kicking Horse - Western Canada Alberta and British Columbia (???)
2. Laqke Louise Alberta, Canada ... the back country must extend into BC!

6. What was the source or original idea in designing the modern ski lift?

The source was two people who desperately wanted to get to the top with little effort who were of inventive minds. Their names escape me right now. It may have been first discussed on one of their annual trips to Tuckerman. Once at the top they thought "there has to be a better way". The primary source to their discussion was "Necessity", you know -- the mother of "Invention". That's it ... the other guy was named "Lazyness".

7. Sum of x divided by 2 = Y
Why is this formula so important to all skiers and what does the value y represent?

"Y" represents 1/2 of the set of skis -- either the left or the right one.

8. The following are key numbers which every skiers should know!
They are presented in a specific sequence which will help a skier enjoy his/her time on the slope! What does each number represent and what are their relationship to each other?
           3 67 48 255 7

These numbers represent a unique ski set of specifications and settings.

3 = a radical 3 degree side bevel; 67 = tail and tip width on a twin tip set of skis; 48 = the waist value of these skis; 255 represents the boot sole length for which the ski is set; 7 = the DIN setting of the binding

9. Often in alpine ski racing “new” technological discoveries are initially not allowed or seen as “cheating”. List 3 “new” equipment changes which were initially frowned upon yet now have changed skiing!

Bent ski poles --- why wait for the gate to bend them :?:
Race suits --- and this is why I'll never race -(They don't make one large enough  )
Wax compositions --- ohhh the faster to move down the hill

10. One event,,just one event motivated the very best skiers in North America to be together for more time than just a ski competition! This happen just once in the history of skiing and has never been repeated!
What is this event?

The New York Winter Olympics at Lake Placid!!

I wish I had more time to ponder and research more deeply as I'm sure there are better answers to these questions.

Mike

I promised NOT to give hints,,but I really do want to give away these gloves to a "worthy" skier so,,,,,

2. Item 2 : The "teeth" should tell you where to bite! If ever you had Tyrolia the answer is yours!

3.To be "ahead" of the wave of new ,,,,,,,,,,, is their goals.

4.Strength and rigidity comes in many forms!

5.There are many places where you can be in TWO places at once!

6.The man that can "tranfer" one successful process to another context will always be a great success!

7. What is the central concept in Gaussian theory?

8.What do they ask you when you rent skis or when you buy skis?

9.How can you go faster, sharper, longer?

10. This event made "men" out of boys! All who participated never forgot this event. In fact they still talk about it! They still make movies about it!

I hope this helps some skier!

I know the rules of engagement stated that we were permitted one - and only one reply ... and to that end I've used my one shot.

Since the quiz continues in my own little world until I see the correct answers.... and possibly others who have yet to post an answer (maybe Jan for example) might get a thought from what has come to my mind to help ( ) in their reply, I offer this for consideration.

Maybe the answer for # 10 has more to do with the quest of "Invention" and his friend "Lazyness". Maybe Pavel is not trying to have us focus on the Lake Placid Olympics but rather a major trek up the Tuckerman Bowl :!: I know he has done this trek quite a number of times ... I don't think that is a secret.

I wonder ...... .... Was there a major gathering at Tuckerman which fulfilled the clues of Pavel's original question. (Something famous like the concert at Woodstock which has world fame.)I have seen movies on the place. The trip down is a lot more fun than the trek up -- Just ask "Invention" & "Lazyness"

If there was a really strong case that skiing may come to an end then I think skiers would unite and try to stop the cause - of the possible end of the sport. The cause is huge, the cure is even bigger because it would require world wide co-operation.

Global Warming would unite all skiers and as the weather patterns have changed in North America.... this must be the event!!

Yes Pavel, that's certainly true ... it is an unfolding event.

I was originally thinking of the World Cup events of the 1970's when the Crazy Canuncks came into the forefront of the event; but didn't think that was as huge as you may be looking for --- nor did I think it united any more than the Canadian skiers from North America. There have been movies made the ski team's formation and it's story in general. And the way they dominated the World Cup events certainly shook other countries in suprise...

So let's see if this is the event you have in mind. It almost seems that I've found my shotgun ... but my reply has been posted so any of my comments are actually just "ski chatter" :-o .

Here is a reference to the Crazy Canucks for general interest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_Canucks

(By the way, 1970 was my first year in University - and many years before I "found" skiing, so all the excitement about the "team's" accomplishments at that time was lost on me, I'm afraid.)

Mike,
You must be Canadian to mention those "crazy canucks",,most skiers on this site have no idea who they are.

Let me try another way to get you out of the "skiing" perspective. Yes this great event did unit ALL the great skiers to be together (some even had life long activities due to this participation)!

In our life time ( assuming you are not under 50) there were perhaps 5 events that "marked us"; onset of Rock and Roll, Beatles, Cold War, Hippie Mouvement, and,,,,,

Some demographers would even argue that we were the "product" of this event!

Well Pavel I cannot wait any longer or spend any more time lying awake at night trying to work out your fiendish clues so here is my submission ...

1.	For some time I was fairly sure that this was one of a number of “flex control inserts” for Salomon boots. I was sure I remembered seeing this type of thing on the market – You bought the standard boot and then installed the appropriate insert whose “squishiness” met your personal requirement. But then I thought no. I then spent sometime thinking it was a binding hold drilling guide (again for Salomon) but however I looked at it I couldn’t work out why the top surface would need to be inclined if this was it’s purpose. I have now settled on an answer which I am convinced in wrong because I can’t make your clue work with my answer (never a good start!) So my answer is: A device to prevent ski tips from crossing. I am sure there was a trade name for them but advancing age prevents me from recalling it! I think the holes are both to allow fitment on a range of different ski tops and makes and also to reduce weight. I suspect that they are no longer needed because the introduction of shorter skis has reduced the tendency of skis to cross.

2.	Ok, now we enter the realm of “The Sleep Deprivation” question … Again I don’t immediately know the answer but hopefully like my old maths master used to tell me, “Show your workings and then even if you get the answer wrong you will get some for method!”. Firstly, my observations:
•	The device appears to be made from metal – Is this for strength of to dissipate heat or perhaps for both?
•	There is an area between to two raised sides that looks to have less white powder deposit on it – Could this be because this is where a ski is located?
•	The two raised areas have semicircular holes – Is this for attaching some other element of the process?
•	The overall impression of the metal is that it has been exposed to some kind of heat process and we see the flux residue. Equally the white powder could be wax, although it looks too dense.
•	The two ends are reduced in thickness – Why would this be important to the function of the device? At one point I thought that this was an old version of a “Ski service boot” that allows the person servicing the ski to insert this into the binding and then invert the ski and mount it on a bench to work on the base – This doesn’t really make sense because you would need a different plate for every different boot sole length and anyway the ends are the wrong shape to fit a binding properly. So why are the ends thinner?
•	Reviewing your clue I am more and more convinced that those teeth are not intended to be used to remove any material from the ski. They certainly aren’t sharp enough to remove edge metal so that leaves them as some form of clamp / retainer, but the distance between them cannot be varied so they must be designed for a specific ski / binding configuration.
•	So my final answer is that this is the worlds most over engineered device to support a ski whilst at the same time clamping the (Tyrolia) brakes out of the way to allow base servicing. For an extra point I suggest that there are additional elements required to make this item fully functional.

3.	I think this must come down to shape (as mentioned by others) but more specifically their shape to out-do the opposition, respectively, Other cars, The Enemy and Other ski manufacturers. It is the adoption of this “new” shape before the “opposition” can find an answer that allows success.

4.	I think that this answer boils down to one of the phrases “monocoque” or “composite” but my automotive history isn’t strong enough to explain my reasoning. What I do know is that Porsche is one of the very few sports car manufacturers that employ the monocoque construction technique (the tooling costs are prohibitively high I understand). As for ski manufacturers, presumably the concept of manufacturing skis from a range of different layers rather than a single strong core (like a chassis in a Model T Ford and later) was prompted by Ferdinand’s designs although this is conjecture.

5.	Cervinia & Heavenly – Although if Ski Areas are allowed either “The Porte du Soleil” or “Espace San Bernardo” would both qualify.

6.	Pass.

7.	Now this might be a little controversial but I believe this is a question about weight distribution both in a fore-aft direction and a left-right direction. My only hesitation about this answer is that not all skiers are bipods, which would discount the left-right aspect but here is the thinking: Assuming that the total of all forces acting on the snow is X then dividing these forces equally between both feet gives Y, an optimal force distribution for efficient carving. Equally, if the total force applied to the ski is X then to achieve a neutral and optimal stance the forces should be applied equally to the front and rear of the ski or X/2 = Y where Y is the force applied to each half of the ski. Gaussian theory is intimately involved with distribution involving symmetry which would perhaps explain the clue.

8.	These are all pieces of information required by ski hire / ski shops in order to provide you with the best match of equipment to your individual requirements.
a.	3 – Self Assessed Ability rating. Many systems exist where 1 = Total Novice, 6 = Expert or possibly I = Novice, II = Intermediate & III = Expert
b.	68 - Mass in Kg
c.	48 - Age in years
d.	255 - Boot Sole Length
e.	7 - DIN setting (although in many cases the shop should probably calculate this for you!)

9.
a.	Probably not strictly classed as “equipment” but the introduction of the hinged slalom pole has probably had more influence on that particular discipline than any worn by the racer – It allowed the development of the “cross lead” where the racer can take the pole at ankle height using the outside hand to “clear” the pole and so with a fanfare of trumpets we unveil the need for your legendary “Racing Gloves”! Prior to this, heavily ribbed tops were worn to clear the gate by extending the inside arm forward thus allowing the pole to slide past, bearing in mind the pole was solid and did not flex on impact.
b.	Cat-suit material has a huge effect on the performance of downhill racers, so much so that exacting limits are set for the porosity of the material – Who can forget Ken Read having to hand over 1st place to his team mate Steve Podborski in Morzine, France in 1979 when Ken’s suit failed the porosity test!
c.	Finally it has to be that topic that is never far from our thoughts – Wax. Probably the subject of more conjecture, discussion, pseudo-science and confusion than any other topic in skiing. However, with continued development modern waxes play an extremely important role in Alpine racing, probably contributing at least as much to ultimate winning times as any other single piece of equipment.

10.	I just don’t know enough about North American Ski history to be able to answer this with any real confidence but just to give an answer I’m going to say “The day Mount Saint Helen exploded” …

And now for a good nights sleep :)

Jan I just did the first read of your answers. You see like you I go to sleep at night thinking who will be the great winner! First thing in the morning and read posts on this site!

Your answers made my day!

Your sense of observation, coupled with your experience made the difference.

You are the top scorer so far!

Your answers were so close,,,I am going to have to read answers again.

You are "soaring" very close to success score!!!!!

I will send you pictures via your email of the two articles and I am sure you will emmediately get their use!

Bravo for great effort and "complete" answers!

Jan, your answer was superb. Hats off to a great approach to the analysis.

I confess that this quiz scared me, I knew if you wanted to do well, there was a lot of time involved.

Was in Niederau last week, but couldn't meet up, every minute was filled. Will catch you in second half of January, maybe wait at the bottom for you? :-)

Re:SKI Racing Glove Questions Are IN!!!! (sleepless nights are coming)

Jan, I cannot quite work out the logic of the 4 man chair. The only issue with the single chair was it's age, it was after all, the first chair lift in Tyrol, installed by Herr Hochmuth, in 1947.

But there was hardly an issue with lift queues, so I would have thought that a double chair would have been OK.

The other issue is that the chair is only feeding the Hochberg. What would be good is if another run was developed. The easiest for this would be the Gseng, and I discussed this with Michael Unger. He said the bottom section was too steep and narrow for the average skier, and this is true. So why not develop, the bottom section?

I see at the top, on the path to the Anton Graffe Hut, there is some log/earth widening.

There used to be other runs there, too, the Standard, and the Touchech, both of which got treed-over.

With regard to the Roscopf idea, I think the issue remains with the camber of the Lanerkopfl, together with it's preponderance to ice over where it is wind-exposed.

I can not wait any more!

Too many skiers "begging" me to give out the answers!

So if you all do not mind ,,,,,,,,,,

The winner is Jan!

As a smart wolf he waited till the very end,,sniffed out the competition,,checked out all the "angles" and spend hours analysing the "properties" of the two first items! I suspect he also used his wife and sons to get some of the answers,,,,but all that means is that he will have to share his gloves!

Now for the surprise!

Rossfra8, Gordieski, Tony-H, Rose R, Mike and Trencher took the plunge and posted some possible answers! They took the time to research possible answers! They checked out sources and I hope in the process learnt about skiing!

I will be sending via PM to all above in the next 30 minutes all the correct answers!

Those that just surf around and do not wet your feet,,,,well you are going to have to ask these skiers to share their knowledge!

Till next quizz,
