Next season

So, wheres everyone heading off to next season? I know its early doors, but even if you dont have something confirmed yet, most people have a plan of where they intend to go.

Its my wifes 40th in Jan, so a group of us are going to Bad Gastein. Looks like a good choice, large ski area, excellent snow record, Austrian apres ski prices, short transfer.

I also want to get out to Serre Che for a week next season. Its had a lot of investment and I want to do it before it gets really popular, as the travel companies predict.

Its possible that I will also make the annual pilgrimage to Mayrhofen, but that will very much depend on what the snow is like and what deals can be done. Having had a fantastic week in Verbier recently, I am quite keen to take the Mrs there and show her just how good it was.

I can only manage 3 weeks per season, so it all depends on what comes up when. The Dolimiti Superski area is also on the wishlist - Arabba, Selva, Val di Fassa or Canazei would do nicely. We will see in time.

Whats in everyone elses plan?

The group want to go back to tignes so we'll probably do that but if I can get a week in before hand I want to go somewhere that'll be kind to me post-op (unlike dave's friend in la grave!). I was thinking of ste foy but I'm not so sure now, maybe flaine or saas fee, but we'll probably end up in val thorens (though I wanted to save that for when I was strong enough to ski the cime de caron).

Re:Next season

Nice question Tony.

Always spend my birthday in the Bichlwirt, 18 Jan presents of schnapps, zipfer, etc welcome. Then stay for two & half weeks. Most years that covers the Hahnemkam, and sometimes go over to Kitsbuhle and watch.

Most years, finish off the season with a week and half in Niederau. March is a very pleasant time to ski, and the light & length of daylight is good for painting. A recent problem has been the conversion of valley painting time, to top of the mountain gluewein time, followed by a last run down.

The other couple of weeks are spent in a couple of big areas. My other half likes to ski different runs every day.

However, the small group of skiers in our wee village, has voted to go to America next season. Have skied a fair bit in Colorado and love it. I am being swayed towards Utah, which actually suits me, but I don't think the group have thought through the full effects of steep off piste, and I am not about to enlighten them.

My parameters are, good snow, good runs, strong preference to ski within 50 metres of the door, good atmospere/ architecture, nice beer & pubs, modest cost mountain food, modest cost lift pass.

That is why I return to Niederau, year after year. Why do you think a core of J2SKI folk keep going back? Why don't we have a J2SKI meet up in the Bichlwirt on 18 Jan 09?

Re:Next season

A question for all the obsessives, eh!

Note sure yet - my main week is usually with a big group, lots of families including my own. We tend to favour the big resorts - something for everyone! The Crystal clubhotels in the big French resorts, Tignes, Meribel, Flaine, Alpe D'Heuz, etc. are usually well placed to meet our diverse needs and things like free kids places and group discounts bring down the cost. Might try Morzine/Avoriaz next year - haven't been there yet. My real ambition would be to get the group to St Anton - it is simply fantastic. Unfortunately, suitable accommodation for large groups can be hard to find and most tour operator accommodation (affordable!) is quite bit out of town.

Four of us went on a lads long weekend to Soll in January this year - it was great . Will probably try to do that again next year as well. Now that it is in the diary, so to speak, the missus will probably put up with me going again! Given the rave reports about Niederau, I might think about there for that trip. As far as I can gather, it is not much further than Soll from Munich airport (transfer times critical to effectiveness of weekend package - 3 days skiing for 1.5 days off work!).

Would love to do more but missus thinks one ski holiday enough for anybody and believes I am doing well with my second trip.

Its kind of nice to start thinking about it already but it really is too far away

Re:Next season

Funny isnt it - Mrs H believes 2 ski weeks are enough, as she also likes her time in the sun in them summer, and before anyone suggests a summer holiday in the Alps - NO!
I however have managed to get her on 2 weeks, and wangle a 3rd week, be it with a mate as previously, or my daughter as this season. I need those 3 weeks.

I still cant get my head round this obsession with Niederau. It does appear there is a huge bias on here to that resort, which I guess only means I am going to have to try it sometime. But I have this mental block about the conditions and the height of the resort and ski area which keeps telling me to go elsewhere.

I do like the look of Jasna, and the prices are hugely attractive too. My requirements are similar to those of Dave Mac in terms of costs and location, although I do tend to end up making a decision based on holiday price. When you end up in Verbier for £269 catered including flights etc, I dont think you really care too much if its ski in ski out or what the architecture is, without sounding flippant. What is important is going somewhere where the ski area is a good size with varied runs, and that is snowsure so you cna get some good conditions. Short transfers are also a bonus, which is why I tend to rule out 3 valleys and Andorra every time, although France is almost all a non starter based on the rudeness of the people in the lift queues, the queues themselves (I dont do queues), the price of food and drink generally, and the fact that bad weather often means piste closures.

I notice a few people mentioning Norway, Finland and Lapland for next season. A good mate of mine is going for the first time in his early 40s next Jan, and is going to Lapland. It does appear to be a sensible choice for beginners based on snowsure conditions and nice easy runs. Not sure it would have the appeal for more experienced skiers, which I think is where the alpine areas are on a winner.

Long haul is simply not an option for me, as I cant afford to take more than a week off at a time, and I wont fly for 12 hours just for 6 days skiing, so Europe it is for me. Austria, any time. France, maybe only Serre Che has the appeal, or somewhere on the PDS. Switzerland I liked, and would like to see more of. Italy needs to have some good snow, but I really like the look of the Dolomites. As for Eastern Europe, I think I would have a week in Slovenia and try to do KG, Bled and Bohinj all in a week, as they are only small areas, or possibly take Dan up on his offer and visit Jasna.

Who knows what next season has to offer, until we see the prices on offer and what the snow is going to be like.

Re:Next season

Dave,

Niederau is a small resort set in the Wildschonau valley. Not many runs, but what they have are true skiers runs, not overly difficult, but they need respect. (This is a bit dodgy, one person's easy run is another person's Eiger)

The runs are north facing, and set in the trees, so they hold the snow well.

I expect to ski 80/90 km a day, excluding lift distance, so you can get some good milage in if that is what you like to do.

You can walk to a lift from almost everywhere in the village. And ski back to close to your accomodation at night. (If you are near the road.) Or during the day, if you want to add/shed gear.

The top of the mountain has three or four old alpine mountain places to eat/drink.

In the village there are old farmhouses, stubles(pubs), plus two or three music/dance bars. At the top end of the village is a 500 year old stuble, the Bichlwirt, my local. Most nights, Herbert Thaler plays harp, sometimes Strauss, sometimes the Beatles.

From the top of the mountain there are great views over the Kitzbuhler alps, and towards Westendorf and the Ski-Welt.

The ski school is very highly rated. It is one of the earliest in Austria. There are actually two schools, and I refer to the red school, not the blue. The instructors speak good English.

At the far end of the valley, lies Auffach, 20 min ski bus ride. This is a higher resort, and there are a fair number of runs including a long run down to the village.

Niederau is the kind of place that if you have been twice, they will remember you, sometimes after a single visit.

I have been there more than 150 weeks, so I may be a little biased......... Hope this helps.

Sorry Tony H, Niederau is too low for you.

Tony H, you have to include Zermatt. You can leave it a few years, though, if you wish, Zermatt's greatest attribute is the Matterhorn.

We had a week there last year, but were sufficiently attracted to take a day off from Saas Fee and get another Zermatt day.

There are drawbacks, getting up the mountain in the crowded big cabines, and the associated lift queues, are a pain. Once up the mountain, it is pretty open. The views are terrific, from Zermatt, and from the top. Skiing through to Italy for lunch is very pleasant.

I guess when you typed in Niederau and nothing came up, that was a pretty big clue?

I would try Inghams if you want to prebook. However, you can always get very cheap deals on the usual websites - bookableski.co.uk, skideals.co.uk if you can be a little more flexible and book later. Pensions/Guesthouses there can be had for as little as £150 B&B per person, inc flights and transfers.

And a week in March, venue to be decided, when I hope to persuade my other half to get off her sorry backside, put all that new kit on and actually do some skiing with me!

Just booked a flight in December, thought I'd grab some early snow. It's before the official lift opening, but I should be able to skin up, if the co. decides to hold the opening.
Or I may pop round to ise's hill and steal his pow. It's only a bus ride away

Have just got invoice for next January,s trip. Going to Ruka and trying self catering for the first time. We think the price is excellent.
Trip includes:
BA flights from Gatwick to Kussomo, plus half hour coach transfer to resort.
4 person luxury log cabin, with d washer, w machine, sauna, log fire, drying room, m wave, c machine, tv, radio, dvd player etc, linen, cleaning etc. Had to pay supplements ,cos there,s only the two of us.
Hire of thermal boots and suits for the week, it will be a lot colder than we have been used to.
Three quite expensive pre-booked trips, husky safari, reindeer safari, and snowmobile excursion.
Use of snowmobile for the week.
We did get £280 discount for earlybird booking and internet booking.
Total cost £980 for the two of us.
I know this does not include lift passes, food etc but I still think thats not a bad price.
We do not usually buy weekly lift passes because 1 day we ski, the next we hike up a mountain and board back down, then we might rent sledges for a day and mess around, then we might have a day of cross country ski. We just do what we feel like, so buy appropriate pass by the day. If what I am led to believe Ruka has one of the cheapest lift passes of all.

Wow, to me thats a lot to pay for 2 of you. And I understand that the cost of living over there is very high, so buying food or eating out could prove more costly.
I like to ski for a week for uder £500 including lift pass if I can. St Anton in Jan is one excellent example of just that, in a catered chalet as well.
I guess you do what you think it right for you though.

so I'd say £530 per head in a catered chalet in tignes at the bottom of the palafour during the easter holidays is an absolutely steal :D

I know the cost of living is a bit higher in Finland, so expect to pay quite a bit for eating and drinks. Also will have to get to Gatwick whereas we normally fly local from Bournemouth. But we wanted something a bit different this year, we will have been married 10 years and wanted a bit of 'us' time. We thought we had a bargain, 'cos we normally pay about £1400 for the two of us to Seefeld in hotel. I guess I shall have to do more research from every-one on J2 next time.
When people on here do catered chalets do you go with groups of friends or do you share with strangers? Not one of our friends or family would ever consider having that sort of holiday they are all summer holidays, hot sun and beaches, so have always been wary of sharing chalets with strangers. Enlighten me some-one.

Hit and miss I am presuming...

I only did the shared chalet once last year to Val d'Isere, and I guess it was okay, the other people were about the same age and it gave us more options on the slopes with small groups splitting up due to levels etc.

The only disadvantage you have is, if you get on okay, the direction of your holiday can be taken out your hands a little.

I was with an friend. Her and the rest from the chalet finished around 3.30 and were back for afternoon tea by 4pm. I would board until last patrol or beyond, so when I got back all plans were made and I got no say in matters, spoilt it a bit for me to be honest.

To add to that, I am considering doing half of boarding hols alone this season. Get a cheap single room with balcony, central, in a non catered place (just seen one in Mayrhofen for 30 EUR a night in Feb). Take a stack of books and do what the hell I want. I know exactly where you are coming from.

BTW Just booked 8 nights in the Waldcafe (fairly central as you will doubtless already know and with a good restaurant attached) for £20 a night B and B with en-suite.

Could well be going back in March

I agree about getting time to yourself, I probably sound a bit unsociable but I work in Bournemouths biggest pharmacy for the biggest company in Europe. I have some-one hassling me all day every day, the phone rings every minute and I have to be so professional and full of sympathy and always smiling. I have 70 drug addicts every day to give their daily dose to, the shop is always full of screaming kids, shoplifters, addicts and obnoxious OAP,s. The company is on at you permantley to meet targets, dont overspend do this, do that. On top of that I have to do 3 hours extra study per week, document it and send it to the Pharmaceutical society for marking or I will be struck off the register. So some-times I hate people I just want to get away from them and the phone and do exactly what I want, when I want. Hence why we do the sort of holidays we do.

I've done both and hugely enjoyed both. The best bit of advice I could give you, if you're on your own, is to book into a larger chalet - 20 to 30 ish. Small enough to know everyone, big enough to avoid those you don't get on that well with!
