No smoking in Austria

Question for any of you living in Austria or who are in the know - is the no smoking ban to come into effect in Austria in June? I think I read this somewhere but can't remember where.

I just got back from Austria on saturday there and all my clothes were stinking of smoke! And because you can smoke inside pubs and resturants you smoke more. Someone in my hotel told me the ban was already in place in Austria but due to the amount of ash trays on tables and people smoking I think he was talking s**t. To be honest I prefer the ban in Scotland and im a smoker. Swal

Sadly smoking is (for the time being) alive and well in Austria. However, we operate a 100% non-smoking apartment house and if you read the blog on our website you'll see that I actually evicted a guest for smoking OUTSIDE :) We believe that nature provides enough stimulation and/or relaxation in the mountains to make nicotine redundant! I don't know what the rule changes are and whether anyone will obey them if they do come in but for this season anyway the smokers continue to inflict their noxious fumes all over me wherever I go :( The Auhof

Good for you The Auhof,Why have your right to clean fresh air spoilt by ciggy smoke.Although i`m a beliver in each to their own so long as it does`nt infringe on other peoples enjoyment,The key word hear is CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS. Your home is your castle and you have every right to say no to smoking,I stopped smoking 13 years ago now and i`m very anti smoking, Especially around my children. Rant over......... AJ Adele

Hubby and I are very anti smoking also and NOTHING is worse than standing up a mountain on a crisp, sunny morning and somebody lights up beside you. Or if the people at the next table have just finished eating and light up just as you are about to start eating - now that's really rude. Glad to say that the Kramerwirt Hotel in Mayrhofen had a no-smoking restaurant, not just a no smoking section. It was a refreshing change. I think one of the restaurants on the Raskogel mountain (on blue 4) in Mayrhofen also had a no smoking section. Good on you Auhof, aside from the couple of places we came across in Mayrhofen, you must be one of the few places to ban smoking. We are also accustomed to the no smoking ban here in N Ireland and it's brill. That's my rant over as well 8)

Just got back from Soll and even the bar staff smoke behind the bar. Can't remember that happening in the U.K.

You must be young. You maybe don't recall the ash trays in elevators (oops lifts) and department stores, smoking allowed in the rear of the bus (which meant all except the first two rows of seats), the novelty of non smoking railway carriages, machines where kids could win a packet of five fags at amusement arcades, and of course, everyone behind the bar in the pub had one burning in an ashtray. Oh and funniest of all, you needed a gas mask to go into the teachers lounge at school. It was a different world Trencher

and on aeroplanes and the london underground! those were the days when I used to smoke. so glad I don't now, what a pain in the back side.

Niederau's Harfenwirt is No Smoking in the restaurant area. In the Bichlwirt, I have no problem in asking people in the front room not to smoke, can't guarantee, but most people oblige.

I'm not Scottish Tony, I hail from sunny Manchester. Have lived for a long time in Fife, have a Scottish wife, and two Scots for sons. And yes, I qualify to wear the kilt ~ and do!

We share something other than our love for skiing in common then, as I am an Englishman married to a Scots lass. However, my 2 kids are both English born and bred, fortunately :wink: No kilts for me.

Scottish? We are from N Ireland and twice or three times in Niederau people have mistaken us for Scotts. Not complaining of course, just think it's funny - must be our "country" accent! :shock:

AJ, You'll love this.... Recently a law in Nova Scotia came into effect which makes smoking in your car (if anyone under 18 years of age is present) illegal. Now, I've never smoked in my life and throughly dislike the smell but I disagree with that law. There are too many laws out there. Another town here wants to ban smoking on their sidewalks and parks. Taking it too far... In a ski related manner ... smoking is banned on the chairlift where I ski mostly ... but you see people smoking anyway. If no wind, your chair passes through the same smoke! :cry: Mike

SkiGirl, What part of NI is home? My wife & I visited Bangor, Belfast and the Antrim Coast areas with some Canadian friends who come from Bangor. Several highlights of the area -- The Ulster Folk Museum, Grey Abbey, Giant's Causeway, Bushmills Distillary, Daft Eddy's, Portaferry, Carrickfergus, ..... Just too many to list. But what really stood out was the scenery of the Antrim Coast - lush rolling hills. Too bad they aren't snow covered at some point :!: :cry: Mike :wink:

I know what you mean Mike,If people just had consideration for others laws like the one you mention wouldnt have to be made. It beggers belief though at the number of people who smoke with kids in the car,As the saying goes ignorance is bliss. AJ Adele

Hi Mike Ballymena in Co Antrim, about 30 miles from the coast, 25 from Belfast. Glad you enjoyed visiting here - you got to see a lot. Yes, the North Antrim coastline and glens are very beautiful. If you visit again, other places that spring to mind that are probably worth a visit are are Dunluce Castle in Portrush, Mourne Mountains in Co Down, around Strangford Lough, Lough Neagh and Shane's Castle grounds, Slemish mountain near Broughshane in Co Antrim, Marble Arch caves, Co Fermanagh lakes ... I could go on! 8)

AJ, You are absolutely right! "If people just had consideration for others laws like the one you mention wouldnt have to be made." Respect and consideration for others and their property would make for a much better world .... along with more consistantly cold winters and great snowfalls :!: :wink: SkiGirl, Thanks for your suggestions. The Marble Arch caves sound interesting. We also took in "A Chorus Line" which was playing at the Old Opera House in Belfast (just down the street from the Europa Hotel). We were there in 1997 so I expect a few things have changed since then. Mike :roll:

Hi AJ So you've been to Ballymena? Most people can't pronounce it, never mind having heard of it :) Where did you stay, did you go anywhere nice? Helen PS - all now "No Smoking" in Northern and Southern Ireland of course.

Mike If I'm thinking of the right place in Howard Street, right in the city centre, it's no longer called Shenanigans, now called Skye. They still do very good food downstairs. Have had lunch in it a few times. :D

Hi skigirl, I didnt get chance to see the sites as such,I was delivering a waggon load of copper cylinders to a plumbers merchants :oops: what i remember though it was a lovely place.Quiet the opposite from what we were led to belive about Ireland.As you can imagine it was a while ago when times were difficult.We keep thinking about going back with our caravan. Come on Austria, get your flipping act together and BAN smoking!! I agree, the number of people smoking on the slopes is outrageous. I would just as soon drive 40 more minutes to Samnaun, CH than put up with the disgusting cig smoke in Austria. Ischgl or Samnaun? Hmmm. No cigs? CH.
