Mayrhofen snow

For any of you going to Mayrhofen soon, there is plently of snow there. We are just back from Mayrhofen on Saturday and it snowed 4 out of the 6 days we skiied. It's still snowing but even if it didn't, there's enough to last through the next 3-4 weeks. It's cold at the moment at well, between -5 and -10. However, hubby and I, as early intermediates, found some of the runs fairly bumpy and others fairly icy. Advanced skiers won't find it a problem, I'm sure 8)

Good news for me as i will be there from next Sunday. Looks like it's gonna start heating up next weekend from the forecasts I've looked at. Need to be up early to avoid the really soft stuff later. It's funny cos I don't mind ice at all, just the slow stuff.

Re:Mayrhofen snow

I think the ice freaks me out a bit because when skiing last Jan in Niederau it was only my second time skiing from a complete beginner and the snow was crap. We were skiing on ice on fairly steep reds and it was the horrible feeling of being out of control sliding all over the ice. It probably won't be busy when you go but when we were there it was the week before Easter (I think there were a lot of Germans already there on their Easter break) and the Saab ski challenge was on. Penken mountain was busy but up Raskogel and Egglam it was much quieter. :-)

Hi Ski Girl. I hope you used lots of those tips I gave you about Mayrhofen - looks like you did by heading over to Rastkogel and Eggalm. Its always much quieter over there.
I bet the icy rin was red 16, which is the ridge back from the 150 man cable car back down into the bowl - it doesnt get any sun so its always hard on there. Its where I had my close shave earlier this year, and there is often a helicopter swooping down on that slope.
The reds down the back of Penken, 3 and 5 I think, are also often very bumpy too, but nice and wide so you can pick your way down.
What did you think of red 7, down from the Schneekaar lift? My favorite run.

I hope you go back again, its the sort of place a lot of people tend to.

Hi Tony

Yes used a few of your tips - especially useful one to get to Rastkogel. (However, did get manhandled and elbowed several times in the ribs by an eight year old determined to get on the Tux cable car before me ). A lot of the runs were icy but it was below freezing 24/7. Some of the days it snowed the visability was just a few feet and the light was very "flat" so it was hard to see the bumps! Did 3 and 5 a couple of times and fell on my behind a couple of times cos of the bumps! Red 7 good but again visibility rubbish. We only did it once because any other time we were at the Scheekar chair the queues were about 10-15 min. Reds 1 and 11 good also. Didn't attempt 16 just because it was hard to see and quite icy anyway. Nice long reds at Egglam but the blue/red 5 to the village was awful on the last few hundred yards - icy, hard and very bumpy. Nice little run through the trees from Rastkogel to Egglam. Stayed in Landhaus Roscher (one of the snowhouses) - great place, basic and a bit dated but clean and quiet. People who ran it were lovely, really friendly. Great views from our room onto the mountains towards Finkenberg. Ate in several places but Kramerwirt twice - food fab and service excellent. Oh and the Irish coffees in there are cheaper than Mo's! :) Thanks again Tony.

PS - Ray Mears and Sir Steve Redgrave were also skiing in Mayrhofen last week

Hi Skigirl - I stayed in Landhaus Roscher at Xmas 2006, we were half board so ate in the Strass all but 1 night. Accommodation is excellent in terms of room size, and not a bad walk to the lifts.
Glad you had a good time.

Thanks Tony, we'd a great time. We were gonna go half board and then changed our minds - gutted to find out we would've been eating in the Krammerwirt every night

Ice Ghost - best to ask someone who's skiied in America - I never have (yet) so I can't compare

In Austria, blues are easiest, then reds with black being the most difficult. :)
