Tour Operators Ski Schools Niederau

Went to Niederau Last Feb 2007 with Airtours who booked us (The family) into the Aktiv Ski School (Blue Team) which I must say was excellent. Our 2 boys then age 4 and 7 on the Beginners package were going up button lifts and down Blue runs by Midweek. Our 7 year old was going down Red runs by Thursday. This far exceeded are expectations as we thought they would spend the whole week in the Kindergarten area. It also ment that we could ski as a family by the 5th Day. Unbelieveable. :D

That said, we have booked the same resort again for March 15th 2008 with First Choice this time. Our sons want to go back to the same ski school (There are 2 the other of which is the Red Team called 'Happy Ski School'). Does anyone know which school First Choice use before we book any extras regarding lessons with them?

First Choice couldn't tells us or should I say the sales reps didn't know.

Re:Tour Operators Ski Schools Niederau

hi glyn,
you should book your kids' ski school lessons with the RED ski school in niederau, which is the WILDSCHOENAU ski school. (the HAPPY ski school is one which operates out of oberau, the next village along). i don't understand how you came to mention them in your email. you can book with the aktiv ski school, of course, but the wildschonau ski school, who are in red, is much the larger of the two in niederau and therefore, your kids' experiences will be much wider for that. when first learning to ski, the ski kindergarten of the reds is much bigger, it has more and better facilities. i don't know which school first choice uses, but you can easily find this out by emailing erika at the wildschoenau ski school office. go to www.wildschoenau.com and follow the links to the ski school, but be careful you choose the wildschoenau ski school link. erika speaks perfect english and mans the office throuout the season. you could even telephone her. she works every day except saturday morning, when the boss, Sepp Schellhorn, mans the office. tel; 00 43 5339 2200.email: ski.schule@tirol.com
unless you've booked everything oas part of a package, you can book your ski lessons when you arrive in resort - just go to the wildschoenau office next to the church, opposite the hotel austria, at the foot of the big car park. you can't miss it. you will pay no more doing things this way. however, if you've booked a package including kids' lessons and those lessons are with the aktiv school, you will have to keep that arrangement, as your resort rep will give you tickets for your kids which they must give to their instructor, and the instructors will know and recognise that guests at different hotels are booked with one of the two ski schools. they will see the name of the hotel/guest house on the ticket. there were a few times when it was a few days into lessons that we found out we'd been giving lessons to kids who had paid to be in the other ski school and vice-versa. it happens with adults too, so take care.
really, the reps should be able to tell you which school is which. your brochure, and other brochures, might also give it away, but if first choice is a sister company to thomson, then you will be with the wildschoenau ski school as a matter of course. the children's races at the end of the week is also a grand affair with the wildschoenau school. the instructors are all trained to the same high standard, but if you trawl thro the reviews pages of various ski websites for reports about the wildshoenau ski school, you'll be inundated with parents singing its praises. Sepp and his right hand man, Tony, take the children's safety and enjoyment very seriously; the two are constantly watching the ski kindergarten and the slopes for the children's groups, and are very much present on a monday/tuesday when the kids are trying to get the hang of the lifts and invariably taking a few tumbles!!
hope all this helps. L.

Glyn, Got back from Niederau on Sat. (2nd feb) after a week of instruction with the WILDSCHOENAU ski school, (pre-booked through Thomson), having started as a beginer. We were on Red 19 by Wed pm ! Although I have no experience of ski instruction I though the standard of tuition was excellent and we had a fantastic time. One thing we did notice was how much fun the kids were having and how quickly they seemed to pick things up. Talking to parents who had kids in the red ski school, you can buy a lunch voucher through the school and the instructer will look after your kids at lunchtime, if you happen to be away on the slopes. As an adult I would have no reservations in recommending this school to anyone and we are definetly going back with then next year.
Have fun (I'm envious!!) Roger

Does anyone know if the parents (who are in ski school) actually meet up with their children (who are also in ski school) or whether you stay with your own schools. Bit concerned as this is the first time they have been to ski school, last year they went to ski kindergarten. Thanks )

If in any doubt just as the instructor they are very helpful.Have a fab time its a great place.

Re:Tour Operators Ski Schools Niederau

In reply to Blackbrooks message regarding breaks etc when everyone is in ski school.

For us last year we had the same concerns. This is how it worked out:

The ski instructors all had mobile phones, so if you informed your instructors that your children were in Ski School, they could get in contact either way. Also as a beginner myself you were always insight of the Kindergarten lessons even on the lower blue nursery slopes, so I was always able to keep an eye. My partner was on intermediate lessons, so was out of sight most of the time. But still managed to return for lunch. We did take walkies talkies so that myself and my partner could keep in touch - In hindsight not really necessary and mobile phones are a lot clearer.

As regards to lunch - Everyone stopped at the same time. No matter where you were on the slopes they always made sure you got back to the meeting place/kindergarten. This happens until Wednesday when you may be experienced enough to go up the Gondola and ski at the top. If your children are as advanced you can still meet at the top or you can provide lunch money approx 5 Euros and the instructors look after the children.

We couldn't believe how quickly our children progressed, especially our 4 year old who by Wednesday was going up button lifts and drag lifts by himself.

Basically, don't panic its all family orientated resort.

Have fun.

Glyn

PS. Race day is held on Thursday mornings. We entered the children and it was fantastic.

My other half and I learnt to ski with the 1st Skischule Wildschoenau (the reds) and they are fantastic. We've had lessons with them three years in a row and have booked lessons again when we go next January. So far we've had four different instructors over 3 holidays and they've all been great - we learnt something different from each one. Regarding kids & parents meeting up for lunch - in Niederau all the ski classes seem to stop between 12 - 12.30 so there's a good chance that you'll end up in the same restaurant as your kids (unless you go to Auffach). We don't have kids but any parents we've had in our ski classes have spoken highly of the "reds".

Re:Tour Operators Ski Schools Niederau

hi blackbrook et al:
yes, the skischool will do all it can to make sure that families meet up at lunchtimes. the children's instructors will wait at the ski kindergaten for the adults to finish their morning classes (at 12.00 midday)and will not walk away until ALL the children in their group have been collected. parents: please do make yourself known to the children's instructor and that you're taking your little darling: there is nothing so worrying as suddenly realising you've 'lost' a child, when mum or dad or grandparents have innocently scooped him up. if you are later than about 12.15pm, your child will be taken to the Sportcafe bar nearby with the children who have been booked into lunch. ANY instructor, reds or blues, would never walk away from a child in the village who is obviously 'lost'.
if your kids have been taken up the mountain by their instructor, he or she will try to go to the same place for lunch. at the top, most intructors will head for Rubetzahl's near the gondola.
you can buy lunch tickets for your children at the reds ski school at any time up to just before 12 midday. a different children's instructor each day (or whoever wants to do it) is told very clearly that he or she must expect x - number of children for lunch. the kids' lunch tokens are given to the instructor who knows exactly how many he or she has. these children then go with the instructor across the road to the sportcafe. they have lunch in the back room of the sportcafe where no-one else is allowed to sit and eat. the room is non smoking. lunch is always a hot meal, based on the dish of the day and a pudding, and unlimited amounts of lemonade. they can use the toilets at the bottom of the stairs. an hour or so later, the kids are taken back to the ski kindergarten and the instructor waits until all the children have been collected by the other children's instructors for afternoon classes.
inside the skischool office, there is a blackboard, and the areas where each instructor takes his or her class for the day is chalked up on the board for all to see, so that one instructor can see where so-and-so is, if after 15 mins of waiting, parents still have not returned for their children. it's a bit of a trek from lanerkopfl but the adults' groups will make very effort to be back for 12 midday. the same is true at 3.30pm. the kids' instructor will stay with the child for about 15-20 mins, and only then will take him to the skischool office to sit and wait in the warmth.
so you can spend all day 'sur la piste' safe in the knowledge that someone else is taking care of your baby!!
i was at work today when my mobile rang: it was 'big phil', (skigirl - have you had phil as one of your instructors?!) calling from the gondola in niederau to tell me that he was just getting on the gondola to up to the top. made me green with envy!!

thanks, glyn.
have tried lots of places but am faced with rapidly escalating prices by the hour. i'll try ebookers, haven't tried that one yet. on igluski.com, late last night, the vicky hotel flashed up at £299 down from £800-plus for sat 9th. i rang immed but it was gone!!
the sonnschein has rooms and a flight for a total of £840-plus, but someone's having a laugh at that price!!
this is all my own fault!! it might be that i forsake the red jacket this year... or throw a sickie in a few weeks' time.... (done that before!) !! have a great time in niederau, who knows, may see you there in a few weeks time at this rate!

thanks AJ, will try that ryanair one. searched comprehensively on ryanair last night but didn't see anything that low. here goes ...
march, end of, in niederau , where i need to get to, is iffy, as it's a low resort. and last year was SO bad, but the two years prior to that were out of this world for snow, late into the season.

Hi All,

I was confused about this and so today I tracked down the 1st Choice Rep and asked him for the low down. It seems that 1st Choice use the "Aktiv" or Blue ski school. Apparently it does say this in the brochure (but maybe it's in that huge block of small print at the back!)

As an aside the rep gave me this number: 0043 535 667 220 which is their central number for local enquiries. May be a useful number to try!

Finally he said that as Thomson, Inghams and First Choice are all owned by the same company, the company may well decide to book ALL lessons with the "Reds" next season.

Hope this helps someone.

Jan

Last year at the season end, the snow at Niederau was fantastic. OK, the bottom schuss was a bit watery in places, but the mountain was beautiful spring snow.....until about 2.00pm, whereupon a gluewein, a perusal of the Kitsbuhler Alps from the Kropfraderjoch restaurant, and a chat with the locals seemed the right thing to do.

well, i didn't make it to niederau over half term after all. i have been so miserable that i haven't logged on since then! thank you to all who put forward very useful flight suggestions. i followed up all of them, but when i actually telephoned to book, many of the flights we no longer avaialable, and the coach/train up to gatwick (as i cdn't get a flight more local to wales/south west) added another £50.00 or so. i was even trying to book a flight in the middle of a cover lesson in school on the friday!!! the kids were very amused and behaved impeccably as i begged the operator to search for this-and-that!
but thanks averyone.
am very worried about the conditions in wildschoenau at the moment. when did it last snow? ooh-err. i recall when i was there 3 years ago, digging my car out from under the snow: all you could see was the shape of a nissan micra - and that was in march!! L.

hi adele,
yes, am kicking myself, especially as last nov/dec, i lined up several excellent flights and prices, but left it too late this time to do anything about it. the yellow sticky i'd written all the deals down on was still in my diary last week, and i have transferred it to 'bring forward' next november! i've already tried to get prices in niederau with 'Pack your Bags': they tell me they can do a week NEXT february half term at the hotel sonnschein for just over £900!!
