Re:snow conditions in Niederau

Hi there

Have just got back from Niederau on Saturday. The first couple of days we were there it rained on the lower slopes but was a blizzard and fog on the top slopes. However the snow was good. By the third day (Tue) it was a bit icy but we skiied Niederau again on the Thur and it was a bit better. We went to Auffach on the Wed and Fri and the snow was excellent. The bottom half of one of the black runs in Niederau (where the single seater chair lift is) was closed as it was supposed to be patchy. Hope this helps

Re:snow conditions in Niederau

Hi woodworm,

The conditions in Niederau today are nearly perfect (sunny, clear, cold and with enough snow to keep the pistes in great shape) although what they will be like by the 26th is probably only known to “Mr Admin” and his nearly constant streams of regularly updated information )

Joking aside the weather forecasts from this site are usually accurate for the next 24 hrs but looking further ahead things change and sometimes substantially.

If you would like a more detailed update, PM me closer to your departure date and I will let you know how it looks here on the ground.

Re:snow conditions in Niederau

woodworm,

If you havn't taken up drinking yet, you have a nice surprise awaiting you. Try Zipfer, in the Bichlwirt.

Remember Niederau has the north facing slopes, and together with the good run cuts through the trees, is worth 700/800 metres on other resorts, (I maintain that Niederau outpunches its weight, well height really!)

As long as Niederau retains some base, you will get good skiing. I have enough confidence to have booked my return flight 2 days after the season end on 6 April.

Apart from last year, and 1971, my winters there have been good ~ I did miss a couple of years when in the Antipodes, and a few when the kids were growing up.

Ski well.

Could you provide a hi-res graphic that could be printed onto an iron-on transfer or much more simply provide us with the chance to buy some J2 goods?

I have been wondering how to identify some of the people that I've been chatting with here and short of wearing a "Hi I'm Jan" hat I'm not sure I have a good answer - Maybe just trawl the bars shouting as usual eh )

Well there's good news and bad news

We did indeed have some snow today. It started during the night and has continued during the day but the temps have been quite high so it's been a kind of wet snow in the village :( However, on the slopes it's been falling as good snow and I'm sure the piste bashers will have it in top conditions by the morning.

All this being said, the pistes are in almost perfect conditions (barring the Lanerkopfl, which is sketchy at best), although anyone arriving for next week will not be disappointed, with low temps overnight the pistes have been wonderful in the morning and not deteriorating until the very last thing, post 16:15 …

Just as an observation, the forecasts on J2Ski have been very accurate when looking into the next 24hrs which is more than can be said for some sites )

See ya all here soon!

(Oh, and Mr Admin, when does the J2Ski shop open for us to swath ourselves in merchandise to allow easy recognition in resort?)

Happy Hols

Re:snow conditions in Niederau

Hi, I'm planning a week in Niedera from Mar 15th and I am a little concerned about the snow on the lower slopes especially as some of my crew will be learning to ski for the first time.

I have been looking at the historical records (http://www.igluski.com/viewsnowhistory.cfm?rid=232&from=snowreport ) and obviously last year was bad everywhere, but taking say the lower slope figures for Jan this year which range from 10 to 20cm then comparing back to previous years we seem to be below the average (ref above)
Jan 2007 7 cm
Jan 2006 71 cm
Jan 2005 37 cm
Jan 2004 47 cm
Jan 2003 18 cm
Jan 2002 40 cm

Now I noticed about half the time the figures for March are generally lower than Jan, so if we are only now getting between 10 and 20cm and we are half way through the month, then statistically that would indicate there may be even less in March. Needless to say that wouldn't be good.

So I would be delighted to hear from anyone who could comment on these figure and projections. I am assuming that skiing does take place reguarly in Niederau in March, but it is ONLY because the lower slopes are topped up with snow cannons. Further I assume things have warmed up a fair amount compared to say the 1970s or 1980s and that the snow cannons have been maintaining the season length for a number of years now.

Its got really warm in Tirol lately, so lower resorts will be suffering. The bottom of the Ahorn Anfahrt in Mayrhofen, which comes into resort at around 700m was only just skiable last week when it was just above 0c, and that after a fresh dump higher up.

Neiderau and Soll are well known for being the first places to "dry up", although I met a guy at Munich airport who said last week was awesome in Niederau and Alpach.

Just returned from Niederau. Everywhere in Tyrol suffered the Sunday storm two weeks ago, and Niederau was one of the few places that could run the lift system, the Gondala height is only about tree level and gains some protection.

Anyway, I really like the edge control you get when skiing in the rain.....

Managed several days over twenty runs, so plenty of skiing available.

Had a nice dump of snow on Saturday past, freshened things up.

Played guitar with accordian players~ Louis from Kufstein in the Rubezal, and with Erwald from Cologne in the Bichelwirt.

Met a couple of Dutch ladies at the side of the piste ~ stripped to their undies, sunbaking. I stopped and leaned over, suggesting that this was the best view of the Alps I had ever seen!

It's not all skiing you know...

Also met Jan. "Your not skiing with your legs together, Dave" "We are on a path, Jan"

Joyful.

Hi All,

I don't know what all the fuss is about, we've had nearly a week now of bright sunshine during the day with a max temp of about -2 and then heavy fresh snowfall over-night :) The off piste is totally untracked and there are no lift queues, the après-ski bars are so quiet that they are giving away free beer and schnapps to anyone who asks and the lift company is paying people to ride the system. Urr hang on, that damm alarm clock is going off again :( (if you got this far and were kinda going with it, I'm sorry for teasing)

Actually we have been having some great sunshine and almost all the runs are skiable, yesterday the runs were holding up well until after lunch and even then they were just a bit "spring like" ...

I too have been keen to know what the bleep "Mr Snow God" thinks he's been playing at but a brief survey of the local meteorologists (in the bar) say that snow by the weekend isn't unrealistic. So what with Mr Admin’s wibbly wobbly things and my finger in the air it looks like next week should be one to watch :)

Re:snow conditions in Niederau

Hi All,

In answer to questions about the snow / piste / base conditions I can confirm that there are increasingly large areas of grass around the resort but the main pistes are still covered.

Without doubt the base has suffered but I'm not convinced that the damage is irreparable. As Dave Mac and others have noted, Niederau is predominantly North facing and holds onto the base better than a low level resort has any real right to.

Looking at the weather today, it has been hot and sunny all day but now it’s feeling really eerie. There is a real feeling of anticipation in the atmosphere and some seriously dark clouds have started rolling in. The birds have been shouting all day and now they are silent and there’s not a breath of wind (so don’t ask me how the clouds are moving – ask Mr Admin!).

If I wake up tomorrow and it’s been snowing I don’t know if I’ll be surprised or not although it’s hard to imaging it snowing right now.

I’ll report more tomorrow.

It did snow over night!

Not a huge dump but a significant change in the weather and perhaps that’s the more important thing.

It’s hard to estimate the snow fall depth but probably about 40-50mm would be about right.

Also of interest is that the sky looks very much like it has more to offer which is certainly what the forecasts are saying.

More updates, as the day progresses…

Re:snow conditions in Niederau

Just returned from Niederau today, a terrific season end week. Snowed several days at start of week. Completed 45 runs over a couple of days, around 180km.
Snow was totally trustworthy, runs were pretty empty.

Moved onto three days of spring snow, where the best skiing is in the morning with the odd beer, and sat looking over the Kitsbuhler Alpen in the afternoon.

Met up with Jan on the season's last day, and admired his prolific capabilities with the schnapps bottle!

Back in July for a weeks walking.

Re:snow conditions in Niederau

Sorry Adele, you are the last person I would over egg Niederau, I know how much you love the place.

Sorry caron-a, you cannot encapsulate Niederau in a brochure, you have to experience it, get the different life flavours.

Herbert Thaler and I used to play harp and banjo together, when Herbert was just a farm boy. Now he owns several hotels, he doesn't need to play harp every night, but he does do it.

Sepp Schellhorn operates one of the best ski schools, with high standards.

The skiing is limited but fairly challenging.

The views from the top out to the Kitzbuhle Alps are terrific.

The Wildschoenau valley was formed when an angry dragon bit out a huge chunk of ground, thereby releasing a vast lake, forming the Kundle Klamm, and also forming the valley now containing Niederau, Oberau, Muhtal, Thierbach and Auffach.

In 1809, the Wildsconeau Sturmloden troop led by Major Jacob Margreiter led a series of fierce battles against Napoleons' troops, in the Inn Valley, winning several against impossible odds.

Have just re-read this, I think I should get out more.

That run red 19 and red 23 are excellent!! I was loving them in the middle of March when I was there and the slopes weren't that busy either.

I did ski 3 out of the 6 days in Auffach tho. But I love the place all the same.

It gets the thumbs   from me )
