Dont mean to be rude, but Bulgaria ust doesnt appeal for skiing. Its limited ski areas, the country hasnt got a great reputation for service, accommodation or hospitality, and developers are raping the place.
All the stories I heard from people who have been there are bad ones, including food poisoning, piste closures, no signs on the slopes, and broken and old lifts.
I wonder why people actually choose to go there for a ski holiday, apart from the fact that everything once out there is a little cheaper perhaps?
Like I said, dont mean to be rude.

No Serjoe, I havent. But I know people who have. Borovets doesnt have a good reputation, but you clearly work for the Bansko Tourist Board. I know there has been a lot of investment - I got that promo DVD last year, but all I have seen on that is new lifts and very limited runs. Also, I know a few property developers who have been buying over there, and all sorts of dodgy deals have been going on. I understand half of it is already Russian owned. It has no appeal for me because of its limitations.
Pamporovo otherwise, but each to his own I guess.

Like I said, with so many other wonderful places to go in Europe, I dont understand why anyone would go to Bulgaria, when you consider that France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Andorra have so much more to offer.

And no mafia, if you do buy property out there, either!!!!!

i don’t work for bansko tourist board and i don’t own an apartment there. I am not talking about dodgy deals or properties at all. Its true that is English and Russian owned resort but i don’t care. I don’t go to a ski resort to stay in the town or buy properties or walk the streets to meet the lap dancers or them people standing in front of each food place trying to lure you in. I go purely for skiing and believe it or not bansko is got for that. it take me around 5 min from top to bottom with average speed of 80km/h + another 11 mins with 35km/h on the ski road to the town. there are 70 km of ski runs which is not a huge number but is enough for a week to explore. I'm not saying that is as good as Austria of France, but look for a holiday for under 300 pounds in this places- you won't find one.
Oh, and one more thing - the slopes are almost empty at the moment.

Re:BANSCO

Serjoe. For your information, I have had the following holidays, all under £300:

Mayrhofen Feb 2007 £229 half board
Sauze d'Oulx March 2007 £129 half board
Mayrhofen Jan 2008 £159 B&B

That kind of dispels your theory behind the cheap prices, although I know its cheap to eat and drink out in Bulgaria. But if you want better quality skiing, food and drink, and accommodation, as well as people who dont try and get you into their strip clubs all the time, I'd stay away from Austria.

I reckon I'd have done Bansko's slopes in about 2 - 3 days, so it does have its limits. But whatever flaots your boat, mate. I might give it a try sometime, but I'd much rather see Kapaonik in Serbia or KJ in Slovenia first to be honest.

The people who run the lift system Ulen ( not sure on the spelling) were more bothered about poncing about on ski-doo`s showing off.Novice skiers were falling off the 4 man chair lift in a pile,One poor woman got smacked in the back of the head with the chair and needed assistance.Did the bloke operating the lift rush to her assistance NO our ski instructor did.He carried on smoking his fag.

I haven't been to Bansko or Borovets but I have been to Pamporovo (2001) and my experiance was of gentle people trying hard to provide a happy experiance for guests. Some of the skiing was novice but some was quite challenging however the overall experiance was a good one.

Jan, I was in Pamporovo in the mid 80's. The food was a bit variable, but it was mostly old fashioned good wholesome stuff, for example my chicken soup had chicken bones in it  The tuition was great, and the hire kit was very good. I was quite surprised at the steepness of the terrain and also remember the resort staff being genuine and hard working. The funniest event was trying to change money.....legally!. The change bureau was never open, so I did a deal with the chef of the restaurant round the back of the kitchens....you want Lev's...I have Lev's....
Seemed reasonable, he wanted sterling, and at least he wiped his hands before handing over the money )

Re:BANSCO

Hi all,

I went to Bansko in early 2007 so here are my thoughts.

First of all Bulgaria wasn't my choice but a group of friends were going for the first time and they wanted it as cheap as possible.
I has my doubts as I had only skied in France before that trip (Les Menuires, Courchevaal & Flaine).

I'll start with the bad
A lot of the lifts were closed for many of the days due to bad weather or the fact the runs hadn't been bashed.
The weather wasn't that bad other than one of the days but they seemed quick to close.
This meant there were large queues on the ones that did open and the staff didn't try to fill the empty spaces on the lifts to speed it up and clear the queue.
Once on the lifts I found them to be fine.

On the third day, the main gondola closed late morning which meant that there was no way to get up the mountain (in a lift/car anyway) which meant my wife was stuck down in town for the day after visiting a friend in hospital earlier on (accident first day on run back to gondola).
When it came to the end of the day a friend and I came back to the upper station to find that they were laying on mini-buses but they wanted us to pay around £10 or so for them!!
I was quite disgusted with this so we decided to ski down the long run home to the home station which meant skiing on the very difficult run due to the lower part having bad snow and black ice everywhere.
This is where my other friend hit his head on the first day and had such bad concussion that he spent 2.5 days in hospital.

The hopsital was unlike anything I had seen before and looked like something out of Hostel (film).
One of the nurses called her daughter who spoke English and she came down to translate which was a godsend.
She told us that they would look after him well regardless of how the hopital looked. (dried blood up walls!)
i would implore anyone who travels to Bulgaria to take a phrase book otherwise you could struggle.

We also had the last day cancelled due to a terrorist alert where there were apparently devices hidden on the mountain.
We tried to get some in on the morning of our leaving day but it was closed for the same reason.
I ended up having 4.5 days skiing which was more than some and less than others!

We went to a Bulgarian restaurant on the last day and it was an eye opener.
There was a platter of meat delivered which looked dodgy enough for me to leave it almost untouched.
If you look into more than I did you'll probably find some good food there but we just went into a random place.

The Good. The runs although not many in number were pretty good and the ones higher up the mountain (when you could get there) were enjoyable.

At night there were a few good places to go.
Sir Galahaad or Lord Galahad. This is a lively place where we had loads of fun for a few of the nights. They also do an amazing steak so if you do go i'd highly reccoment this and the bar.
There was also another bar that i can't remember the name of but its a Karaoke bar which is down some steps. We went in there and it was fairly empty but once we got in there and on the mike the place filled up and was kicking.
I'd like to think it was our voices but maybe it just gets busy anyway.
I don't think I'd ever sung so much... I loved it!!

There's also the Happy End which we left until the last night (even though I nagged them to go in several times).
They do live music in there and we had a fantastic night in there also.

The hotel was good and the staff were really friendly, especially the woman who kept the beer coming when we were in the outside hot tub.
At one point we were all in the hot tub with snowing falling on us.
Sweet pictures there.

All in all I'd say if you haven't much experience of ski resorts then this place could be fine for you.
Good nightlife, some good food (hotel was ok too).
Skiing was also fairly good but hopefully it will get better if they can open more lifts and get the queues moving quicker.

I wouldn't rule out going back for a cheaper holiday but I've now discovered Austria and although dearer, I love it!! :-)

Jeez I've goen on a bit here.
I've even worked past my time, I should've left 10 minutes ago.
its the weekend!! What am I waiting for? I'm outta here...............

Remember
Go Hard or Go Home.
