Skiing in Utah

I am planning to go skiing in Utah in early March. I need a place to stay for my wife and I. What is the best resort and where should we stay?
Thanks,
Kit

Re:Skiing in Utah

I can only comment on the three resorts at Park City, The Canyons, Deer Valley, and ParkCity resort. PC is a typical old mining town turned ski resort. Home of the Sundance film festival (very busy week in the town though not on the slopes).

Deer Valley is a ski only resort. You will discover, it's not so much the lack of snowboarders as the lack of teenagers that makes for a more relaxed atmosphere. On a blue sky, icey day they have groomers that will make you weep with joy.

PCMR (Park City Mountain Resort) has the best mix of terrain.

The Canyons is great for varied intresting runs. The runs down some of the ridges are special.

For the Park City resorts only, if you have your flight boarding pass, dated that day (possible if you have a transfer) you can ski free the rest of the day. This can save 50 bucks per person on half day tickets and is a great for a couple of hours warm up and altitude adjustment.

There's an outlet mall nearby for great shopping.

SLC is a typical US city and can be a cheap base to travel out from, to the various resorts.

Car hire is cheap (if you book on line). I rented a small ford for $40, Fri morn to Sun eve.

Buy Lift tickets at Costco in SLC to save $15 to $20 each.

trencher

Re:Skiing in Utah

I've never been to the area but i know that Alta and Snowbird are amazing, from friends that have been there. The Snowbird Lodge, i think its called, is supposed to be good. Both Alta and Snowbird are famous for their amount of snow, 500 inches per year, and the quality of it. Also both are within an hour and a half of Salt Lake City with its international airport. You cant fly there direct from the UK but fly with Delta from Heathrow to Cincinatti then from there onto Salt Lake City.

Re:Skiing in Utahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

All of the above suggestions are great.

May I suggest staying at Sandy , since it is very close to canyons, has some of the very best ski shops and motels are cheaper. I stayed at Best Quality for three weeks at $55 per day with pool , sauna, spa and continental breakfast

Just around corner was a 24 hour grocery store that makes great fresh subs!

The question should not be, "what is best resort" but rather which resorts offers;
powder - Alta, Snowbird
Hidden trails - Alta
Groomed runs - Deer Valey
A comment about Deer Vally. If ever you go to Utah you must ski Deer Valley at least once. Yes more expensive lift tickets but you experience something you will never but never experience again. Immaculate runs, great skiers, excellent , no perfect service. Where else can yo get a selection of Alaskan king crab, Maine lobster, Canadian salmon all for $8! I never but never stop to eat lunch but this time......!

Try Solitude. Quiet smallish center with great back bowls not known by most.

I spent 5 days straight in the upper bowls at Snowbird. The secret to skiing this center is to get there very early. Go up tram and never come back to base until 5 PM. Amazing upper world of deep bowls, quiet "secret" passages. Try to find "local" to guide you!

Of course Sundance is not known by most skiers. A very private center it is in a "box canyon" and few tourist go there, yet very unique in style, in attitude and skiing possibilities. Another gem that is not known yet!

Check conditions since my friend called to say it was raining"!!!!

Re:Skiing in Utah

SKI & SNOWBOARD RESORT OVERVIEWS

Deer Valley Resort

Consistently rated one of the top ski resorts in North America by Ski Magazine, Deer Valley Resort is the ultimate for ski area service. Without fail, Deer Valley ranked #1 in dining, guest service and mountain grooming. I always say ?eating a meal at Deer Valley is the best meal you will ever have with your ski boots on?. Deer Valley has 21 lifts and 90 ski runs. Deer Valley is a skiers only mountain and snowboards are not allowed. In fact, the snow grooming at Deer Valley will make you ski better than ever ? hero snow! Our 2 bedroom condo is very close - less than seven tenths of a mile from Deer Valley Snow Park Lodge and ski lifts. It's nice to know that the Snow Park Lodge offers a free ski storage so you don't have to haul your skis back and forth to the condo - that's quality service!

Park City Mountain Resort

You can enjoy thirty three hundred acres giving you a tremendous variety of runs. The views are outstanding. You can sample bowls, gladed tree runs, steep chutes and perfectly groomed gentle cruising slopes. Ski Magazine consistently ranks Park City in their top 10. Transworld Snowboarding rates the terrain parks supreme. There are 16 lifts and 104 runs. 7 peaks of fun and you can ski to Old Town Park City for restaurants, clubs, art galleries and shopping. If that?s not enough ? you can ice skate at the base area. The free Park City shuttle bus picks up at the bottom of our hill every 20 minutes and takes you from our condo to Park Ctiy Mountain Resort.

The Canyons

The Canyons is conveniently located on a four lane highway roughly three miles north of the town of Park City. The Canyons is currently the biggest ski resort in Utah, offering plenty of variety for your vacation. The area is comprised of eight mountains with thirty seven hundred acres of terrain to meet the needs of skiers and snowboarders. The Canyons boasts of one hundred fifty two trails and seventeen lifts. Crowds are easily dispersed across the mountain and on a stormy day this a perfect place to catch some untracked Utah Powder. The free Park City shuttle bus picks up riders at the bottom of our hill every 20 minutes and takes you over to The Canyons for a fun day of skiing or snowboarding.

Did you know that there are eleven ski resorts within a one hour drive of the Salt Lake City International Airport.

[Links removed - Info, not Ads please - Admin]

Plan Your Ski Vacation now - Our first significant snowfall hit this Weekend

The first significant snowfall hit Utah's ski resorts this past weekend. Our maountins picked up over 12" of new snow. On top of this, Park City Mountain Resort, in preparation for opening day on Friday, November 16th, has begun to make snow as overnight temperatures drop into the 20s.

[Links removed - Info, not Ads please - Admin]
Re:Skiing in Utah

We are going to Utah for the 4th time and as always will stay in Salt Lake City and take the short drive each day to the resort of our choice. (I understand that there is a skibus that takes you to some of the resorts each morning from SLC) All resorts are wonderful, but different, and it's a shame not to try as many as you can.(I haven't seen any reference to Snow Basin but it is different again and beautiful too. As well, staying in Salt Lake City is much cheaper than at the resorts and you can enjoy the benefits such as many choices of restaurants, nightlife, and, if you enjoy great music and you are lucky as we have been in the past, get a chance to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in rehearsal

Re:Skiing in Utah

Hi,

Am traveling to SLC on Friday from Sweden and am looking for a place to stay. Understand that it is cheaper to stay in SLC than in the resorts, but maybe someone know someplace cheap or might need an extra person to share somthing. Am traveling alone and am open for any resort but Alta/Snowbird is high on my list.
This trip is about skiing and the hunt for the famous Utah powder and will end on the 17th.

How is Sandy to stay in, looks pretty close to the mountains?

Any tips wld be highly appreciated.

/Ludvig

Re:Skiing in Utah

Aside from booking your rental car in advance, I would spend some time looking online for hotels with "stay and ski" packages. The lift ticket is free or heavily discounted with a nights stay at hotels.

Park city resorts have a deal where you can ski free on the day you arrive by air. You need to fill out an online form at the PC chamber of Commerce site beforehand. Works well if you get into SLC befor 10am. You can be skiing for free by lunchtime.

Trencher

Re:Skiing in Utah

I have been skiing at Alta and Snowbird for the last thirty years and consider them the best for steep and powder, but there is zero apres ski, which is a negative for most. Snow Basin and Powder Mountain are also great powder skiing without much apres ski and are a longer trip from the airport. I also like Brighton and Solitude in Big Cottonwood Canyon, especially if your group includes a range of abilities. Park City Canyons and Deer Valley are better for after ski, but less good if you like steep and powder. All Utah areas have excellent grooming, wide corduroy runs for the early park of the day. Have fun.

Re:Skiing in Utah

We're going to Deer Valley Ski Resort in Park City, Utah in the middle of March. My friend said her brother says it's a great place for intermediate to advance skiers. I've skied Alta and it's only about 30 minutes from the airport in Salt lake so the drive isn't bad. It's a pretty good place for advance skiing but they don't allow snowboards so it's sort of a bummer.

I'm checking it out. We want snow and since my friend lives in Salt Lake our trip will be Utah this year.

I'm from San Francisco so South Shore is where I spent my winter months working at Harrahs and spending all my money on Heavenly.

I'm looking for suggestions for Utah skiing as well near Salt Lake.

[No Link Spam Thanks - Admin]

I'm interested in hearing from those who've been to Deer Valley. It looks like a great resort.

Re:Skiing in Utah

I've skied Deer Valley a few times. It is a great experience, but may be a little too civilised for some. On the snowboard issue, if you you have kids who want to board, Deer Valley run buses down the road to Park City Mountain Resort for that purpose. They even have their own snowboard instructors, who go with the kids to PCMR.

The good thing is that both PCMR and the Canyons have great less civilised, but avalanche controlled terrrain to challenge most people, and are a ten minute, free bus ride away.

Trencher

Re:Skiing in Utah

Deer Valley is my favorite resort in Park City. The resort opened some more advanced terrain in 2008 with the addition of the Lady Morgan Express lift. This lift provides access to the Lady Morgan Bowl and opens up additional advanced terrain beside the Empire Bowl. I like Deer Valley because of the fantastic on mountain food and the service. There are also many great restaurants in very close proximity to the resort. Best Deer Valley Restaurants is a blog article I found about Deer Valley area restaurants and it's pretty accurate. I think they should have rated Bistro Toujours a little higher but hey, everyone's got an opinion.
