Re:Ski carrying device

On the shoulder, poles strapped to skis if carrying more than one pair, same as everyone else. This is most efficient way of carrying as weight is distributed to legs and not arms. All devices I have seen, seem to involve making into a handbag with zero advantage. Golf bag might work well if comes with caddy.

Re:Ski carrying device

If it is a short distance, then over the shoulder. Otherwise, my rucksack has the ability to carry poles and skis, and as Ranchero states, the weight is then carried by the legs. Also, it means my skis and poles are vertical and less likely to poke someones eye out or smash their kneecaps

Re:Ski carrying device

It's not until you have to carry them up hill that you realise how heavy they are. I always have a problem keeping them together, I usually get tired, jiggle them for comfort and end up with a helicopter shaped device that slides off and takes someones knee caps with it

I have tried the handbag technique using my poles and handles but they slide out of this too. I do have one of those velcro strap thingys but I always forget to take it with me

Any innovation would be welcomed but as skiing has been around such a long time, I am suspecting most ways of carrying have been tried and everyone goes back to the usual over shoulder technique because it is the most effective.

Re:Ski carrying device

When I first started skiing 6 years ago, I ended up as the packhorse for wife and 2 young kids, somehow carrying 4 sets of ski's.

On return from that first trip I decided that I would not be doing that again so just looked on eBay and there was a ski-sling that strapped on the ski's quick and easy and then put over the shoulder really easy to carry.

Really helped the next trip, but haven't needed to use them since as I either went on my own or been lucky enough that there was ski storage right by the lifts!

Do you mean those simple ski ties? the velcro ties that hod the skis together while you carry on your shoulder?
I bought 6 sets of these as i can see myself loosing them all the time and the were only a pound a set at the brume ski show.
Some of the best ski cash i have spent. They go on when i take my skis off at night and sty there until first lift. Then in my pocket.

Re:Ski carrying device

No not ski just ties, though that principle is used.

There is a ski tie, but a thick and strong velcro tie which then has an adjustable strap between them that you literally put over your shoulder to carry so they are upright. A bit like putting the stap of sports bag over yoru shoudl is the best way I can describe it.

Also got another that had a pouch at the bottom where the tails of the ski's go into and then the strap is attached from the pouch to a velcro strap that goes abouve the bindings and again forms a carrying strap.

This isn't quite what I have but near enough - [url] http://www.skisling.com/

Absolutely!!

This is a vital skill that many beginers and intermediates neglect to practice. Looking good carrying skis and having that sort of nonchalent swagger in ski boots is a far more visible skill than any amount of carving or popping down the powder.

IMHO there should be classes devoted solely to this activity.

Re:Ski carrying device

In regards to carrying skis and other "ski related skills" it is amazing how beginner skiers do not observe better , more experienced skier and try to model their behavior.

Ski instructors think just ski techniques and rarely now provide instruction on other important "ski skills". Just one example is evident.

Learning how to get up from a fall.

In past 10 years have never seen an instructor, teaching this vital skill BEFORE skier falls. Typically, once a skier has fallen ( in a tough section), is stressed, frustrated and must learn how to get up ( while rest of class is watching).

Not very good learning context.

I agree with above posts,,,you can tell with about 90% accuracy who the beginner, less effective skier are based on how they carry their skis.

Here is my list of the most ineffective way to carry skis.

1. dragging them
2. holding each ski with each hand ( one per hand)
3.Throwing them ahead every 5 meters ( yes saw this)
4. Carrying them across arms like firewood.
5. placing one on each shoulder, then across throat in front. This is called the guillotine approach.
6. the famous "chevalier technique". You have all seen this. Skis under elbow a la jouesting knight. Great technique for spearing child.
7.The last and most ineffective method is,,,,,,,leaving the skis on the ski rack.
( Every year ski resorts have hundreds of orphan skis left on ski racks)

This summer take out your skis and learn how to carry your skis, poles, boots and still have a free hand to hold your girlfriends ( wife's ) hand.

I suspect only 5% know how to do this simple move.

Re:Ski carrying device

What I want to know is whether the skis should be pointing down at the front or the back when you carry them on your shoulder. I always carry mine over my shoulder like a sack of cow cake (had plenty of practice carrying those in the past), and it seems to work OK.

Re:Ski carrying device

The way I carry them is ....
(other techniques are available)

Tips forward, front of the binding resting behind my shoulder, tips slightly down so the weight of the skis keeps them "on" my shoulder.

Oh and on my left shoulder, left hand resting on top of the skis - don't need to hold them, they just stay there once balanced.

Re:Ski carrying device

Thanks Andy, so does that mean your skis are pointing down at the front?

I will definitely have to get myself some skis, so I can practise this

I'm not sure, but I think I generally turn mine on their edges, to stop them from sliding off, and use my right hand to keep them there, leaving my left hand free (it's very difficult to remember when I haven't got any skis here at home).

Re:Ski carrying device

Old Andy is correct about tips down position and bindings resting on shoulders near neck. If you look very carefully at high tech,,high level ski jackets they have a rip-stop (black usually) nylon material at shoulder area ( where skis should rest).
That is the function of that rip-stop nylon patch.

The trick is to balance skis with shoulder as fulcrum. With this method you can carry poles and boots AND still hold that tender hand!

Practice this winter this move.

The item that no one has addressed yet is how to get into that " ski carry position" .

Once skis on shoulders that cool walk desired is easy.

What I watch for to detect the good ski carrier from the great (expert) ski carrier is one special move. One trick that instantly tells me,,,,,that is "old Andy's pupil" or Dave Mac taught him/her how to carry skis.

It is called that "transition move".

From skis leaning on wall, on rack to ,,,on shoulders.

A smooth, move, elegant and fluid that shows the one that has done it a thousand times.

Yes I see the brain cells heating up,,,,searching,,,,,,

No You TUBE videos of this move yet.
Re:Ski carrying device

May I suggest an improvement on video.

Excellent video. I go one step more.

Watch video again. Note that carrying hand. See how the gloved hand is holding the skis with thumb and index finger.

I place my wrist OVER skis and use wrist as a counter weigh to balance skis on shoulders. If you pressure down with wrist ski tips will go down.
PS. Ski tips must be downward to avoid you hitting skiers behind you with your ski tails!

Why use this wrist action ?

Well it frees your hand to carry poles ( yours and women's )!
It frees your hand to carry water bottle.
In short it frees your hand,,,,

Of course the other hand is for,,,,,the wife, the girlfriend,,,etc,,,,,

Just my way.

Re:Ski carrying device

On the shoulder - mine or someone else's:) There is a way to carry them on the shoulder and prevent them from sliding apart sideways. It's easy to show but not so to explain but basically you end up with the top ski sliding a bit forward and down and just stopping there. Don't carry them parallel to the ground, always tilted downwards. I carry poles in my hands. Overall I don't find carrying skis tiring, and look at it as the integral part of the sport. It's walking in ski boots that I dislike. Last season my flat was quite far from lifts (about 1300m) with some uphill stretches and ski bus only going one way on my street so I rented the boot locker for the year - it aslo saved me from carrying them back to Geneva when season ended and they will be waiting for me there when I return in December.
