After the snow melts what is left behind?

This story got me thinking.

Thinking about the stuff left behind at the end of the season.

Do you think the melting snow reveals a mass of lost stuff? A few skis, poles, coins, cameras etc....?
I wonder if treasure hunters armed with nerdy metal detectors hit the slopes.

Dog pooh. The snow covers it up and when it melts, voila dog pooh, fresh as the day it was made.

I was just being honest.

Let's just say perhaps some dog owners are not as hmmm... Conscientious as others with the picking up and baggng routine and..... In the snow, it gets covered up and doesn't smell, so it is easy to forget it's there but..... When it thaws!

It's just my experience that's all

I know the kids in Sauze go walking under the lifts this time of year and collect all sorts of things. Cameras, phones, gloves, poles, glasses, etc.
I imagine there would be a market for amuptee skiers looking for 1 glove or 1 ski pole......?

Well if you were on any French glaciers last year after the hot dry summer and previously poor winter, human excrement and associated paper would have been top of list. Not pleasant!
You might also find a friends ski goggles under lift, POC do nice helmets but the goggle clip is not the best.

BTW I expect you'd find quite a bit of dog carp in Val Thorens. Last time I was there, I watched lots of dog owners emptying their pets on the ski area at the top of Place Caron.

BTW I expect you'd find quite a bit of dog carp in Val Thorens. Last time I was there, I watched lots of dog owners emptying their pets on the ski area at the top of Place Caron.

I saw a lot of that in Belle Plagne the other year, disgusting.
Resorts should be made dog free or specify an area for them.

They just need to learn that a responsible dog owner also has to clear up after them. Or don't get a dog!

As well as all the other rubbish:

It has been estimated that in a big resort as many as 30,000 cigarette butts are dropped under each chair lift during a ski season. Each one contains enough nicotine etc. to contaminate about 500 litres of water.

That's a telling photo, Swing Beep. My buddy and I skied down under the chairlift at the end of season and collected 80 left hand gloves, only 2 or 3 right hand gloves.

Interesting Dave. I'm left handed, and would always remove my left hand glove to do anything on the lift.
This makes the lh glove ( in my case) the most likely to fall.

Does this mean L handed people are most clumsy (probably)
Or that more left handers ski (unlikely of course)

Next time I'm ski-ing I will have a very careful look at my gloves, and if they have 'idiot' strings I will put my hands through them.

Mind you, I've never lost a glove yet :D

I find the place I'm most likely to lose my stuff is in the ski locker room, when I come in exhausted at the end of the day and put my gloves etc. on the bench whilst I take my ski boots off.

A high proportion of people, if right handed, use their dominant hand to carry out a task needing the most strength or dexterity. Hence right handers will pull off the left glove first, and then drop it, because their LH is less dexterous.

Left Handers do not have this pre-disposition. (Science Daily 8 March 2011)

And as discussed in another thread, when taking skis off, RHs pick up the RH ski and lift the brake over the LH ski, and vice versa when unlatching skis to put them on.

My two sons are both left handers, and they both THINK they ski more quickly than me. So much for the power of thought of Left Handers!

I lost a glove once from a chair lift while i was messing with my iPod, the people in the chair behind me were shouting and pointing down and it took me a while to realise what i had done.
On a positive note it gave me my first off piste experience retrieving it.
Its not until you are gloveless that you truly feel their worth....

tell me about it, I tried to video my daughter but could onl;y do it with the left glove off, after 30 or so seconds I had to put the glove back on as the cold was biting my hand because we were skiing down at the same time.

You know, I wouldn't be at all surprised if some people had deliberately thrown the drinks bottles and cigarette ends etc. on the ground from the chairlifts.

We sometimes have holidaymakers like that here, who drive up our lane and throw their rubbish (like Macdonalds waste) out of the car window. They seem to think that we have street cleaners here like in the city, whereas the truth is that if one of us doesn't pick up the crisp packets etc. the rubbish will simply lie in the hedges for years.

In some ski areas that I ski, at very top 100 meters before lift off platform are three huge plastic drums for skiers to throw down various objects.

What do you see 300 meters before these drums?

Red Bull drink cans. Beer cans, Cigarette buts etc,,,,

Hi All,

Sorry I've been absent for a while....

There is an organization ( kind of a volunteer group , will try to dig out the name ) which picks a resort each year to clean up after the holiday season is over, to clean up under the lifts...

apart from the usual , phone's , rings, watches, poles , lighters , gloves etc under one lift the year before last they collect over 30,000 cigarette butt's.....amazing and a little disgusting at the same time.

The organisation JonG mentioned is called Mountain Riders http://www.mountain-riders.org/index_en.php In practise most of the rubbish is collected by people employed by the ski lift companies as it's easier to see the rubbish before the grass starts to grow again and it has to be removed before the cows etc. go up the alpine pastures for the summer.

The figure of 30,000 comes from Val Thorens http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/skiresorts/greenresorts/resort.aspx/Val-Thorens (scroll down until you get to "Stopping the Butts). The reason for concern is that the butts contain nicotine, a very dangerous water soluble chemical, the amount contained in about 30-40 cigarettes is enough to kill an adult. As nicotine is readily soluble in water (and just about everything else) it gets into the water supply, sometimes the cows ingest the butts which can make them ill.
