Christmas Skiing

Hi,
We are thinking of going on our first Christmas ski holiday. I know December can be iffy for snow so I was thinking of high resorts.. Have you got any suggestions of resorts which are snow sure and will have a Christmas feel in Europe.
Thanks
Jo

Thanks. I'll have a look, want the Christmas feel and heard France wasn't that Christmassy. Only 8 months to wait and get the skis back on :)

Re:Christmas Skiing

Hi Jo&Stu, I have never actually been skiing at Christmas, but from what I have seen around that period, the Germans and Austrians definitely seem to do "Festive" better than a lot of the rest of Europe.

If I was going to do a Christmas trip, they would be the countries at the top of my list.

Hi Jo,
The only thing wrong with Obergurgl is that it's quite expensive

It specializes in luxury hotels with spas etc.

I hope you have a great time wherever you go :D

Re:Christmas Skiing

Not sure how you define "Christmassy" but out of last 10 years I spent 6 Christmasses and New Years in Verbier and it was great. Particularly New Year. There are tons of clips on Youtube that show the great atmosphere in the village. Especially when it's snowing. I will be there for the holidays period for a number of years to come, there is no doubt about it. The only word of warning, if you want a meal out book in advance, especially if there are more than 2 of you. And bad idea buying your champagne on a day, queues are hours long.

We have spent a couple of Christmases in Schladming and would certainly recommend it. Christmas in Serre Chevalier was pretty good too!

Italy being a strongly religious country would be worth looking at, maybe somewhere a little more traditional like Courmayeur?

Re:Christmas Skiing

A lot of the continent don't really do Christmas..more New Year I was in Obertuern the week before for a couple of years and its very snow sure and easy to get to. They have a special week that includes the lift pass in the price of the hotel for the week before as well

Re:Christmas Skiing

We did xmas in ADH this year and i was VERY disappointed. I won't ski xmas again.
I found that there were no celebrations at all, it seemed just like any normal day.
This year we are staying home to eat quality street and drink too much cheap plonk before setting out for ski time over new year.

Re:Christmas Skiing

Totally agree with snapzz, France doesn't seem to do Christmassy stuff (or what we perceive it to be )never tried Austria at that time of year

If you want Christmassy then do Canada or US, they do it very well.

TP

Re:Christmas Skiing

Ive had Xmas skiing in Val Thorens and Mayrhofen. The first trip to VT was when I learned to ski and Xmas kind of passed me by. The 2nd trip I have to say whilst the town was wonderfully decorated, skiing on Xmas day didnt feel at all christmassy and we all said we missed being at home, and agreed never to ski at that time of year again.
Plus the prices are generally ridiculously inflated, and going the week after new year will save you tons of money.

Yes, was thinking of a thread about this today. The TOs fix their lift pass prices at a date in the year, and it may be that this year, the brochure prices will be higher than resort or TO bus prices.
