Meeting new people in chalets

Opening lines please for first night in a catered chalet or chalet hotel.

I've come across the usual "Hello, I'm Mark and I come from Derby..." kind of thing, although its time to panic when you get "Hello I'm Felicity and I run an art gallery in Richmond. This is my husband, Rupert....."

Its often "So, skier or boarder?" which can lead to some good banter. Especially when someone says "Boarder" and everyone else gets up and leaves the table

Drink is a good ice breaker. "Can I top up your wine?" or "What do you think of this French rubbish then?" seems to be a popular starting place. This was ok until a couple of years ago. 8 of us went in a group, 2 other couples in the same chalet for 12, first night pre dinner drinks and we are throwing wine down and opening bottles of beer and vodka, and 2 of my mates are generously pouring glasses and handing them round the table. One guy at the end, there with his Dad, declines a couple of times before steaming off to bed straight after dinner. His Dad continues to share drinks at the table, and simply raises his eyebrows.

Half an hour later or so, the guy comes back down, sits at the table again, and says "Sorry about earlier, I think theres something I need you to know. I'm a reformed alcoholic and drug user and have just come out of rehab......" Blimey

Anyone got any other interesting ice breaking moments or one liners?

That's what puts me off chalets! At least with hotel or an apartment its your choice to be sociable with other groups but always scared its going to be a nightmare with the other guests in the chalet.
A trait I have is to make opinions of others too quickly and express them too honestly. Would last about 2 mins as a diplomat.
Chalets not for me?

Re:Meeting new people in chalets

"May I say Grace before we start please?"

Actually happened

The looks of horror around the table were a sight to behold.
An Irish Catholic priest and a very tidy skier.

Mad as a hatter, drank a lot but it never showed and after a couple of days everyone was waiting for his "Grace" which was different every day and included prayers for snow, sunshine, no injuries and there was one reference to praying for someone to be able to stay on a drag lift if my memory serves me right.

But I will always remember the looks around the table the first time he said those words.

You may have noticed

All part of the fun though. Never had an issue so far with anyone in a chalet, although some of the other groups in the hotels we have stayed in needed avoiding!!!!

Re:Meeting new people in chalets

This is where there is a very fine line between choosing a chalet or hotel, I've experienced interesting conversations and people in both, my favourite was a club hotel in Elmau some years ago when I was allowed on a 'boys holiday' with my now ex-husband.

We were approached by another guest who simply said 'so, who's the best in your group then?' at which point none of the others said a word and they all pointed at me. Quite a random ice-breaker, or not so in this case.

Some people do have a tendency to talk far too loudly about their past experiences and where they've been and how good they are at skiing black runs which irritates me no end, I know we're on a skiing holiday, but reign it in a bit. There's nothing worse than being caught out on the nursery slopes when you've been blowing your own trumpet the previous evening.

Mr Nelly had the misfortune to be sitting next to someone of this calibre on the bus journey to resort this winter, he even got his camera out and showed him last year's photos.
Re:Meeting new people in chalets

(if the ladies involved read this, I am sorry for sharing but you were so far above my "social standing", I mean no offence but I nearly died!)

The scene:
it's the second night in a "chalet-hotel". You can choose a dining time and whether you go private or shared table. We go on a shared 'stranger' table for 10.

Me & my ski buddy walk up to the table, "lady 1 " looks us up & down (quite openly) and pronounces
"oh, *you're* joining us? that's a shame I thought we might have the same dinner guests as last night".
Nice opener! Should have turned around and walked away right then.

Very shortly, during the first course, the table conversation drifts to clothing when I hear " lady 2 " speak for the first time. The first words are (not a word of a lie):
"well Kate tried to sell me three silk ones [scarfs] , "I said Kate no, that won't do, silk is no good"......Kate is lovely you know, and so is Michael..... ["lady 2" glances around the table] ... Of course we know the Middleton's so very well...."

[and goes on to discuss the other members of the family, their links, friendship and history for a few minutes; and some insights that, if true, may have national security implications so I won't share here  ].

I was dumb struck (not in an impressed way), it was so out of context, what does one say to that?

I'm not really a great lover of chalet holidays give me an apartment any day, you can choose where you eat and I don't really feel the need to mix with all and sundry. I do that enough at home.

But put me in a chalet full of knobs like some of the other posters have mentioned and I would love it...... I'd have an absolute field day

Re:Meeting new people in chalets

I think it can be OK as long as there won't be any big groups that came together, in which case they will dominate and it might get annoying to put it mildly. I haven't got experience with chalet holidays and unlikely to get one, but overheard some converstaions from larger groups (usually they are loud so no avoiding it) and can imagine.
I think teachers do a really hard job with little credit, they get criticised for having lots of holidays but from what I see their work life balance term time does not make up for it.
As with with all professions there is a wide range of personalities, some you will like to be with others you won't.

Yes, I think you are right. It's personality that comes first and some personalities when placed in certain environments just can't help but show. A few of my friends are teachers, though 2 are Swiss and 2 Americans, and they are nothing like that. Very laid back people. I would really struggle to apply the adjective "pompous" to any one of them and can't imagine them grilling others as to what they do in life. But they do get lot of holidays:)

Mr Nelly works in the window industry so that usually gets rid of any unwanted attention, people can be so snobbish about what job you do, I couldn't give a toss what people think about what me and Mr Nelly do, it pays for us to do all the fun things in life which is important.

Asking what you earn is a very personal question and not one I'd be prepared to answer to anyone!

I have been asked often, usually by people who thought they had got a really good deal, only to find good old TH paid a lot less, which usually pisses them off a bit. But I've never asked first.

I'd also never consider asking someone what they earn. Its often a conversation point to discuss what people do for a living. The guy next to me in ADH was a farmer, and his GF was quiet while he was discussing the merits of milking his herd. I asked her what she did, and hes simple reply was "I get paid a s*** load for sticking my hands up his cows a****s"
Needless to say, she was a vet, not a weirdo.

Re:Meeting new people in chalets

Snappy, I am with you. The last place I worked I was open about how much I earnt (I was not the biggest earner by the way). I was then called in by HR onlt to be told that salary is personal and we should not share it. GBPGBP reflect people's skills set and people will think they are less skilled.

I have a girl who works for me. She is 'level 5'. In my team there are about 6 'level 5'. She knows what everyone earns. She earns the lowest in that band. She thinks she is hard done by - truth of the matter, she is not as skilled.

Where I am going with this, is if you share what you earn people base that on how clever/skilled you are - thats why some people dont like sharing it. Is it a fair reflection. Is a CEO more 'skilled' than me? Probably. Am I more 'skilled' than a plumber? Probably Not - I guess I would earn much more than a plumber.

It is a very sensitive topic -money always will be

I seem to have waffled there a bit. Hope you get what I mean?

If anyone asks me how much I earn I can very truthfully say that I don't know. We have lots of tax deductible expenses and allowances and things and I never know which figure to use from which bottom line.

And, of course, the accountants have to work it all out, and our farm tax year ends long before the 5th April, but the cottages have to stick to the 5th April - so between skipping and hopping I have absolutely no idea!

But, hopefully, we will continue to earn enough to pay for at least one ski holiday per year, which is what really matters :D

Ally

I seem to remember you and Snapzzz expressing doubts about sharing a dinner table with people you don't know, in a chalet.

And I've never been in a small chalet. So I reckon we could all do with some practice.

Snapzzz - I rather think that what Icy means is that he does a weekly commute between his 2 homes. My parents used to do that as well.

Oh - Icy left the dinner table - without even waiting for dessert! His work must be very important if he's doing it on a ski holiday.

Re:Meeting new people in chalets

Crikey. I nip out to do a couple of jobs and all this kicks off!

Not sure I'm digging the virtual chalet dinner thing. Its a bit weird, but then Ally started it so hardly surprising I guess

So we're finding out a bit about each other on this thread then? So far I've discovered Andy is self employed, Icy owns 2 places, and Snapzz votes labour. And Ally thinks she's having dinner. In MY chalet of all places.

I know what I earn as I pay myself a regular weekly salary, seeing as someone asked. But I wouldn't tell anyone how much that was. Mrs H is the main earner in the family, she pays for the house and bills etc, whilst what I pay myself I like to refer to as "lifestyle enhancement money".

Like Snapzz, I'm also in the camp of not worrying whaty people think about me. If someone doesn't like me, thats their problem, not mine

And no, you don't get chips in any of the chalets I've ever been in.
Re:Meeting new people in chalets

Tony,
I can't remember exactly how his argument went. I just remember he was very angry with me and I hadn't done anything. It was something to do with regional unemployment and the unfair way money is distributed geographically in this country.

Basically I suppose he was just cross that his brother wasn't there and he decided to take it out on me. Anyway I did a pretty good job of convincing him that it wasn't my fault and at the end of dinner he invited us to have drinks with him at the bar. Naturally I wasn't at all keen on that idea so I made some excuse and we ran away.

And there was another man I was talking to in the chalet who droned on and on about what fantastic skiers he and his daughter were. I'm afraid I couldn't tell you the details of that conversation either as I carefully channelled most of it straight from one ear to out the other one but the upshot was that he felt his daughter was ready to start training as an instructor herself.

Anyway, the joke was that he and his daughter were having coaching lessons and we had a lesson afterwards with the same instructor. So I was very naughty and I asked the instructor if they were really brilliant skiers and he said that actually my daughter and I were pretty much up to the same standard as them except that they were a bit faster. And I am by no means a brilliant skier, although my daughter is pretty good.

How odd. He was angry with you and you hadn't done anything? Is there a chance you MIGHT just have said something to provoke him, as I find it a little odd that a random stranger would suddenly decide that you were responsible personally for his brother losing his job?

The other bloke banging on about him and his daughter, met plenty of them in my time. Lots of people talk a good game. Maybe he believed they were that good? Or maybe he was just up his own you know what.

I was sitting next to someone on a bus a couple of years ago, coming back from a ski holiday, and he said he'd just been let out of prison and he showed me his ankle monitoring device. It was most interesting. I'd never seen one before - only on the telly. I don't know how many crimes he'd committed in total but he'd broken into our local post office and he entertained me for ages telling me all about it.

Come to think of it - maybe I should be more careful about who I sit next to

Re:Meeting new people in chalets

We've done the hotel thing with the family and whilst it was convenient In terms of catering, we didn't have much in terms of personal space outside our rooms. Also, some of the other guests were irritating at times. I can do without that on holiday. I've done the chalet thing and really, again, it was dining with other guests that proved the downside. In the end, we now go for self-catered apartments and this works for us - not least because we have far more personal space in which to come and go. For GBP1,000 we get two bedrooms, a kitchen, and spacious lounge all to ourselves in the Swiss Alps. So it's cheaper too.

Well, against all odds it looks like we will ne doing the chalet thing next season. Broached the subject with my dad tonight and he is up for it. Even having to have dinner atva set time with others!

Can you take your own drink or do you have to have what is provided? Sometimes I like a g+t before dinner, is this possible?

I think GBP500 inc flights fully catered was the attraction :)

Re:Meeting new people in chalets

Icy,
I've only stayed in a cheap chalet hotel. They let you buy your drinks at the bar and then take them through to the dining room.

I don't see why they'd object to you having a g+t as long as you paid for it. The more expensive chalets provide free wine with your meal, but I should think you'd have to pay for your g+t.

Re:Meeting new people in chalets

Icy - you can drink your own drinks in a chalet.

This is very common, sometimes they have an honesty bar for mixers.

In a large chalet hotel if they have a licensed bar you will not be supposed to drink your own spirits etc in their bar. This is not just them trying to get you to buy their booze but actually one of the licensing rules.
Really Andy?

I'm very surprised they let you buy your drinks elsewhere (like in a supermarket I suppose) and then drink them in their chalet. I suppose I've only been in hotels and chalet hotels where they have their own bar and you have to buy your drinks there.

I wonder if they will let people do this in the chalet in Les Brevieres - I must remember to ask them.

Re:Meeting new people in chalets

It's been my experience with operators like Supertravel, Mark Warner, Bladon Lines, Total, Ski World etc over many years that it's common practice in chalets- without bars - to allow you to drink your own before dinner etc - often they have honesty bars with soft drinks, mixers and beer.

We've taken bottles of beer and spirits before, never a problem. The only free booze in the chalet is wine with dinner - some places are tight with it and will fill your glass up for you, some leave you the bottle/giraffe to abuse, others simply let you have as much as you want when you want (Skiworld from experience)

When he fell over and the lid came off he was surprised to be surrounded by people asking if he was OK. The red trail he left behind him in the snow might have had somehting to do with it. He was really upset.... but only because he'd spilt all the wine.

Fortunately I have a neutral accent (although the brummy does come back when I visit).

I don't speak like these southerners where they add 'r's into bath and path etc, but they still insist on calling me northern, when clearly I'm not.

I like using on people what he does with the geordie guy, when people have accents. Scottish, particularly.
Let them speak for ages, say nothing back, and when they finish look at them and simply say "No, not a word"
We did it to our chalet host a few years back, Wallace his name was, as Scottish as Robert the Bruce. Everytime he spoke, there were calls for subtitles or someone would say something like "That just sounded like a noise"
He took it well to be fair.
