Drag lifts (skiers, not boarders)

So we are charging down a long red last week, and looking to make it over to a certain sector by a certain time. Best route is to stop half way down, take a short (and I mean short, 100m max) drag up to mid station of a gondola.
I stop and wait for the 3 others to arrive, all agree its the shortest route except my mate who goes nuts, throws his toys out, and says he'd rather ski the left hand side of La Sarenne again (where he got stuck and had a proper paddy) than take this drag.

I had no idea anyone could be so anti drag lifts.

I informed him the alternative is to ski to the bottom, a further few miles, and take the full length gondola back up, wasting approx half an hour. He was delighted, despite his quads buring, to continue down and avoid the drag.

Over my dead body, were words he used to describe how he felt about drag lifts. I am talking about buttons not T Bars. I think a previous experience may be haunting him. He's happy to have a go at a black, but definitely no to a drag lift.

Does anyone else have a similar problem with these?

Personally, I quite like them....gets you involved and feels like youre skiing. IN addition, the drag up the Signal mountain in ADH went twice as fast as the chair......

Nope, they don't bother me at all - prefer chairs where I can, of course, but I wouldn't take a different route to avoid a button or drag lift. Even my snowboarding husband is pretty good about using them

Re:Drag lifts (skiers, not boarders)

Years ago, probably in 1981, in Kitzbuhel, I learnt to really love drags...

....these new fangled snowboards were appearing everywhere and it seemed the approved way for boarders to ride T-bars was to fasten themselves to single skiers, by grabbing them around the chest or shoulders.

I was fortunate enough that a truly, truly lovely blonde, who spoke excellent English, attached herself to me for three successive t-bar rides on the way over to Pass Thurn. Gentlemanly convention means I cannot reveal what happened later......

It appears this initmate way of getting up a t-bar has passed out of common usage....sadly.

Re:Drag lifts (skiers, not boarders)

I have to be honest and state that personally I don't like drag lifts. I will try to avoid them, but not to the point of "no way", and will use them if it means there is no option, or like Tony, to avoid a delay.

I think this goes back to when I first learnt to ski in the 70's, and the drag lifts would frequently just stop, at which point you would start to slide back down the groves, with the inevitable result of half the class falling over. Chaos then ensued and we often had to tramp quite a way to get to somewhere suitable for a beginner to ski down and start again.

I was always happiest when the class went up routes with bucket lifts. I do not recall that we even had a chair lift in the resort at the time.

Don't mind drags, well buttons not the dreaded t-bar. Seem to remember the link from courchevel 1650 to 1850 was a long steep icy drag lined with tree stumps. Try Fernie. Cedar bowl has fantastic open glade skiing and usually deep powder on the far side BUT the only way out is a drag or a very long walk

Re:Drag lifts (skiers, not boarders)

Don't mind them at all. I remember going on some in champoussin Switzerland and there pretty steep in parts... But there all over and a way to still enjoy skiing where they maybe can't put a chair for whatever reason....

Having read your post though, myself and a few mates (2 boarders) went to 3 valleys last yr for a cheap week and 1 of the boarders hated the drags. Same situation as yourself. The button drag up the side of the park in VT was simply a way of getting up high to enable us to get where we needed quicker.... It became embarrassing after the lad could not get on the lift at all. Each time he some how managed to fall.... He finally managed it but it was a long wait.....

Re:Drag lifts (skiers, not boarders)

They are the pure evil of lifts (For boarders). Nothing worse then boarding down a run legs burning to get to the bottom and have to stand in an awkward position with excess pressure on your front foot for the next 5-10 mins. Don't get me wrong I will use them but try to avoid if I can.

Worst part is when your park lapping 9 times out of 10 it's a drag to get you back to the top of the park ?
Very aggressive thing it was. Threw her a good 20 feet. I think thats maybe what could have contributed to my view of the place

At Plagne 1800, there's a button lift that has the most ferocious lift off. Awful when you're unwary, but actually quite a laugh when you know it's coming as you can have some fun doing a Harrier take-off impression!

Lots of T-bars still in Austria and Swisserland (glacier at Engelberg, Arosa and in the Jungfrau also).

Re:Drag lifts (skiers, not boarders)

T-bars used to be quite common on the glaciers in France but rare on normal slopes. Bloody uncomfortable things.

I do like drags though, and very nearly perfected falling asleep on them when doing my seasons way back! They're also a great bad weather option when you'd freeze on a chair. Add it that boarders tend to hate them......!!

There used to be a drag that you could get on a run down from the Grande Motte to get over to Val D'Isere that would lift you some way in the air. Flaine has a couple of drags that do the same.
Good fun when you know it's coming and try to see how far you can bunny hop for!

Tony - I think you may need to choose your skiing partners with more care if you ski with people afraid of a little button lift!

We had been chatting for a year or so about making a trip together, discussing each others ability. You never know until you ski with someone how they get on.
Worst one was from La Plagne (en Vanoise) over to La Belle Plagne many years ago - probably different now. The longest cross country button to quote the instructor. She said 'No one fall off on this'. Spent the last third of it with the button under my chin - and arms coming out of there sockets - didnt want to let go. Have been terrified of them ever since.

Without meaning any disrespect you're doing it right already! Do not sit down. Just assume a skiing position and let the button pull/drag you along. Imagine a friend behind you giving you a push in the lower back with their arm. If you tried to sit down you'd fall, but if you just stand in a skiing position and accept the push then it will all come together. Does that make any sense?

Soon you can let go of the pole and much on a twix or some such.

Owen.

They had T bars in Rauris last yr. Wouldn't let my kids go on em.

Have never minded drag lifts until this yr in bardonecchia. They had a few which went on for AGES and were very precarious and there was always the worry, "What if one of the kids fell off, and if so, how would we find our way onto the piste?" as they were in the middle of nowhere after half a minute! Shame as one was a very scenis gorgeous blue run, and another a black run the kids wanted to go on lots but we couldn't risk that awful lift on their own
Also, over at Jefferau, my hubby stopped top of the piste with my jacket, camera and videa bag and his backpack, ready to film me when I got off the lift. I skied down, and as I got down, the lift broke. he wasn't impressed having to come back down carrying all kinds of stuff. Fortunately it was a very small run. lol

Re:Drag lifts (skiers, not boarders)

I don't mind a button lift but my daughter hates them. A bad experience has made her so nervous that she tenses up and as a result falls off.

There is a T bar at the top of the glacier at Deux Alpes, I had a lovely bruise behind my knee and inside my thigh when my husband didn't twist it far enough out of the way when getting off - thanks for that! But the funniest sight I ever saw was two snowboarders riding it up facing each other astride the bar, which frankly looks like two people enjoying a double ended sex toy!!! Needless to say one "arrived" first and then the other fell off.....

tbh, im a good snowboarder, ive been boarding for years and this is the first year i learnt to use one and now can use them! i would avoid them at all costs, i had a nightmare on one years ago, and vowed never go near one again. my mate hasnt boarded in 6 years, the first thing he does is go straight on a button lift, before even going down a small hill to get the feeling and getting used to it again! so i thought id give it another go and hey presto, i can now use em!

There was a nasty drag lift in Les Carroz, behind the Hotel les Airelles. It started off with such a jump - yuk. It was the best way to get to the gondola station other than using the ski bus. However, I hated it so much that I elected to use the bus every day. I'm a wimp and proud of it!

you feel for parents? I feel for the poor kid. Sorry, but babies shouldn't be taken on holidays abroad. We did Pontins and Haven when ours were small and they LOVED it. Moved on to further fields as they got much older. What's in it for the baby? And what if they get sick in a foreign country miles from anywhere? They can't say what's wrong or how they feel. Sorry but it's awful and selfish. Wait till the poor mite is old enough to enjoy going abroad and can remember it five years later! If it's an older child just having a bad night, fair enough, but babies should not be taken abroad.

Be sarcastic if you must. I am talking about up in the mountains miles away from a hospital and having to speak to foreign doctors. Sorry, I do not mean to offend anyone,it is only MHO but it is something I feel very strongly about. It's scarey enough if your child takes badly ill at home and babies can fall very ill very quickly.

When Little W was born we missed a year so she first went with us skiing when she was fourteen months, we did drive that year and she was no problem and she has been every year since, her passion for skiing matches ours now.
Don't take offence I think it was only meant as a joke
