italy where to ski and stay

We are two Kiwis wanting to spend about 8 weeks in Feb, March 2007 in Italy. We are an expert skier and a very good intermediate. Of course as our dollar doesn't go far we are on a budget. Would like to go to at least four places and stay a week or so in each. Not keen on nightlife, etc, just want good skiing and scenery. Any ideas on nski towns or regions and cheap places to stay would be great as well.
Thanks

italy where to ski and stay

Hallo Kiwis :-) Here's my non-commercial opinion....

For starters I am not mad keen on Gressoney because the valley is deep, narrow, and does not get much sunlight - not a problem while you're out on the slopes but can be a bit grim in the late afternoon... (JMHO of course). Secondly, skiing in Italy is not very cheap - low cost lodging is hard to come by and eating out can easily set you back a pretty penny.

If I were you I would dedicate a couple of weeks to the Dolomites and a couple to the Alps.

In the Dolomites I would try and stay somewhere near to Corvara. The Superski Dolomiti skipass is not cheap but gives you access to runs throughout the entire Dolomite range - a simply vast area. You MUST have ID (eg passport) and a set of passport photos with you when you buy the pass. From Corvara you can ski to litterally a dozen wonderful places and back in a day. Google it and look at the map :-) You may be able to find a good lodging solution in a "maso" (mountain hut). Try the websites of the local "pro loco" tourist offices for this.

In the Alps I would try to stay somewhere near Courmayeur. Week-ends are crowded but the views of the Mont Blanc and down the Valle D'Aosta are wonderful even by NZ's Remarkable standards. From Courma you can ski the Mont Blanc itself and make day trips to Chamonix and Argentiere (Les Grands Montets are Something) in France - also to La Thuile which is wide open and windy but with some great runs.

Last but not least... it's just across the border from Cervinia (you can even ski over): Zermatt. The Hotel Bahnhoff is very friendly and comfortable and (relatively) reasonable - but you need to make bookings there errr... yesterday...

Hope this helps :-)

If you want somewhere within a reasonable budget and have your own transport then we could certainly reccomend a stay at our B&B. We are close to Sestriere and the Via Lattea as well as a couple of smaller but challenging resorts nearby. The Via lattea offers over 400km of pisted trails with many pistes backed up with artificial snow making machines.
if you do not have your own transport do not worry as we can arrange a complete package for your stay including transport, discounted ski passes and a very experienced "ski friend" to show you the best slopes. Check out our site http://www.belvederebedandbreakfast.com for more details.

Also a geographical note The Dolomites are part of the Alps. They are a region of the alps just like here we are in the Cottian Alps. The dolomites are also a great place to ski and I would agree that if your budget can stretch then a trip over there is well worth it.

All the suggestions are great, Dolomites are amazing, the Aosta Valley alps are also fantastic.
If you are still stuck where to spen one week or a long weekend, please let me know, I would love to guide you around Gressoney, Alagna and Champoluc. One of the best off piste in Europe!!! Anyway let me know!
P.s.

For value for money, guaranteed snow somewhere, good apres ski, short transfers, and great varied skiing, you cannot go wrong with the resort of Sauze d'Oulx in the milky Way area - over 400km of pistes.

Shop around on the net though, the brochure prices arent cheap this season. I got a week in Fen half board for £269, and its currently selling for over £500 via the operator.

Hi Pete,

Our Ski Holiday pages include deals from Iglu, that often have good discounts.

There are some good deals going for Ski Holidays to Sauze d'Oulx at the mo; and there's a search form on that page.

Hope that helps - best chance of getting a great deal is to travel outside the peak dates and wait until a couple of weeks before departure.

Actually, it would be great if someone could give me tips on how to find ski packages that depart from Europe.
