Sking In April - Click Here to Comment

Hallo everybody,
My friends and I want to go snowboarding on the 15 of April.
We know it's considered late season but we can't go before that date. Does anyone know if there is still good snow that time of year?? Which sites are recommended to have the best snow? We are 23 so of course we would prefer if the night life would be good but that's second in priority.. Thanks for the help
Nadav

Snow Forecast Summary - 9th February 2012 - Click Here to Comment

This past week has seen deep cold right across Europe, keeping the snow and slopes in great condition throughout The Alps and Scandinavia. Heavy snows have come to the South of the region this week, with the Pyrenees doing particularly well.

In North America there has been a little new snow, although some Colorado ski areas have reported significant fresh snow.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

Although the past 24 hours have seen temperatures moderate across The Alps, very cold weather is set to return over the next 48 hours and temperatures will return to seriously cold (between -10C and -25C) for a few days. Temperatures will then rise gradually over the next week, with prevailing weather being generally clear and cool.

Once again, be aware of the risk of frostbite over the next few days. Take extra layers, minimise exposed skin, use protective cream, stay hydrated and take regular breaks.

The cold and dry looks like it might give way to snowier weather from around the middle of next week, but that's a little far out in the forecast to be sure at this point.

Keep warm and carry on!

St Anton – There’s An App For That - Click Here to Comment

St Anton is the latest resort (of many) to launch a new App.
Their 'iSki Tracker' has many of the features of other ski resort apps giving visitors the chance to, record, document, analyse, share or compare their personal experiences on the piste in the famous Austrian resort with fellow skiers. It also provides information on current weather and snow conditions among other features.

For people living outside Austria, as is the case when downloading an app in any country other than your own, there can be unpredicted 'roaming' charges from the mobile phone company, and it's the avoidance of these with their new app that St Anton are most proud of.

The local Arlberger Bergbahnen lift company working with technology company Feratel and uses GPS tracking so there are no usage charges - you just need a properly equipped phone.
This App stores not only the number of kilometres covered, metres in altitude and speeds (maximum, average), but also the altitude profile, entire duration of your day on the piste (begin, end), journeys completed on the lifts as well as locations. In addition to all this data, all information on the resort itself (snow, weather, avalanche, lift and piste status) can be accessed via the 'plan' menu option.

Tracking and recording via GPS guarantees a high level of data accuracy as well as a visual evaluation in map form. Photos taken on the Smartphone can be assigned directly to the exact position in which they were taken in resort.

iSkier users can then transfer all data stored on their phone to the www.arlbergerbergbahnen.com website for a full documentation of their day on the slopes.

The App is available for Apple, Android and Blackberry and is now as a free download.
Car hire from Bergamo, driving to Bormio (SNOW CHAINS/TYRES QUESTION) - Click Here to Comment

Hi, everyone. Just wanted to check if anyone has hired a car and driven to the Alps without the snow tyres/chains. We are flying in on the 18th Feb and I can't decide what to do. The easiest solution seems to rent a car but rental cars don't come equipped wtih winter tyres (isnt' it insane ?!). Snow chains seem to be on the first come first served basis as well. I saw a suggestion from someone here to rent a car and then buy snow chains from the nearest Shell garage.
Just want to see if anyone has done that and how this worked out.
Thanks for your feedback.

Adjusting binding angle on skis .... - Click Here to Comment

I've been trying to find out the rational behind raising the toe piece or heel piece of bindings to no avail.

Can anyone point me in the direction of any authoritative articles on this?

I am particularly interested in any real or perceived skiing "problems" that adjusting how the boot rides in the binding is supposed to address. Also would adjusting how the foot sits in the boot (extra filler under toe or heel) have a similar affect?

TVM
