Hi there

I'm living in Paris and I'm planning to go snowboarding for 4-5 days in the first week of january.

I'm thinking about going to Chamonix, but would like to hear your input.

From what I see then it's pretty expensive. A 4 day lift pass is 186 euros, and the hotel is 50 euros per night (the cheapest I could find). I'm also expecting the food to be relatively expensive.

I'm wondering if there are any other good ski resorts close by Paris, which is easy to get to, and are maybe not as expensive as Chamonix?

But then again... is Chamonix worth it? Would you recommend going there even though it's more expensive than other places?

If i decide to go to Chamonix I'm wondering if you should recommend taking the train to Geneva or flying?

regards
Frímann

Chamonix seems pricey, but is good value if you can make use of the resort. It's a special place with remarkable views.

Your lift pass also includes the bus between the different hills.

Transfers from GVA are very easy as there are lots of minibus operators running as shuttles. The transfer is only an hour and it's a major route, so rarely gets closed.
Fly to GVA or take the train which terminates at the airport station, pretty seamless travel options.

If you want to eat cheaply, the starting point is McDonalds, prices go upwards from there all the way to Michelin*

If you want a cheaper holiday, why not take the train to Clermont-Ferrand, followed by a train (some hrs replaced by a bus service) to Le Mont-Dore? For Parisiens it is the cheapest resort (nearby, less petrol, péage, 4-day ski pass € 90,60 etc.). There is a free shuttle service between the village and the slopes (4 km).

In Le Mont-Dore you will find even apartments for that price a night - I know for sure, we let them out ourselves ;-) This means you do not have to go out for dinner each night but can cook you own meal. Prices in the village are not as high as the ordinary ski resort prices. A petit café is about 1/1,2 euros, a 3 course dinner in a restaurant starts at around 12/13 euros.

Information on the ski area can be found on www.sancy.com.

Do not hesitate to send me a PM if you want any additional information.

This sounds like a good idea. I did a quick calculation, and a trip to Le Mont-Dore is about 40% cheaper than a trip to Chamonix :)

But according to this website: http://www.skiresorts-test.com/trailmap/le-mont-dore.html . Then the hills are not as suited for more advanced skiers. Which was one of the reasons why I liked chamonix :)

Are there any other cheap options with maybe more advanced slopes?
