Summer skiing in Europe

Thinking of ditching the usual seaside holiday this year and heading for the hills in France this summer for some walking, cycling, kayaking etc. If I am near to a glacier (erm, that's Les 2 Alpes, then) should I bother doing some summer skiing? It sounds quite appealing. I have heard that it's fun, but the number of pistes is of course limited and the place will be over-run by race teams....

Anyone any thoughts?

Having a bit of a blast on the glacier as part of a summer activity holiday can be wonderful.

I adore the mountains in the summer.

Summer skiing means an early morning start and then finnish mid-morning and onto other things. I think it is quite surreal coming down in ski gear to meet others in shorts and sandals!

Whichever glacier you choose the available skiing will be limited and very variable conditions - ice, slush, mud, powder (yes you can get powder at 3000m in August sometimes).

Never been to L2A in the summer but have spent time in Tignes, with about 7 or 8 lifts and a variety of runs from blue to black.

I am off to Morzine in September, wonder if they will have grown a glacier by then!?

Icy, long time to wait for snow if you are going to Morzine in September. Worse parts of the world to wait for snow, though. You messing about on an MTB? Or caving perhaps?

Good job I am not there for snow ;)

Tend to go last week in Aug for a week or so walking. Do the pistes in foot and also surrounding mountains. Love the outdoors. Thinking of getting into mtb this summer, but looks an expensive sport. I live in a great area that has great chances to get out. With Mrs icy on her merry way I need a new activity :)
