Best Ways to get Ski Fit
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 58 Replies

Now that I am more or less retired I am lucky enough to do several weeks of skiing each season. I also have enough time to keep reasonably fit by doing the following in the off season months:

1 When at home I cycle for half an hour every day.
2 I do a 10 mile walk once a week.
3 I do about six weekends, per year, mountain hiking in the Lakes or Snowdonia
4 I do two separate weeks mountain hiking in the Alps each Summer.

I find these activities keep me in good enough nick for the ski season. But I very much agree with Ise and 'Admin' that technique is also very important for long days of comfortable skiing.

That'll do it Geof you sound very fit and outdoorsy
Anyone skied Hintertux in the summer?

I love hintertux, I have skied the Glacier many times but not in the summer. Places to stay, I have stayed at pension burgshrofn in lannersbach, ok it may be a bit far but if you can still take the busses (i'm not sure whether they still run in the summer) then it is only a 10 minute ride.

At the foot of the Glacier is the Hotel Nue Hintertux, a bit pricey, my other half's uncle works there, We have never stayed there though but it is meant to be quite nice.

hope this helps

cheers

I do a combination of walking, weight lifting and rollerskating.

Do you do this all year around or do you do it a few months before going skiing?

actually, I'm just reminded of the other reason for the cumulative discomfort in the quads which is lack of post exercise stretching.

Ise, you wrote that, that is how this debate started, I agreed with you and then you mistook my saying that people might want to stretch and get supple before they go skiing (meaning before they go on a skiing holiday you get supple over time), to mean that I thought people should stretch each time before the ski which I myself don't see as practical because you would have to stretch in the cold which is insane.

I was not being rude about the research you chose to be offended by my posting I shant aopologise I stand by what i said I think that you are being pedantic and petty it seems whatever i would have said you would have an opposing view, fair enough but lets not get childish about it.

As I have said all along in my experience stretching before excercise (not skiing) has been beneficial to me. I also believe that stretching after skiing maybe in a sauna would be benefical to people but that is in my opinion. as I always state I am not a medical professional so all i can offer is my opinion and what i have experience of I have advised noone to do anything. I am not an expert but neither are you.

If I offended you by calling you dude i apologise for that

There has been no conflicting research on this to my knowledge. In the absence of evidence to the contrary we'll take it as being true.

Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it isn't there dude.

Absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence....

I can only shake my head, there is no point argueing

Maria Alm in Austrai is very very pretty and cheap, and it also caters for mainly beginner to intermediates.

Conratulations by the way enjoy the honeymoon wherever you decide to go

I love Austria

I would say try ST Anton it is reasonably high up and one of the best places to ski in the world. There is also Hintertux I have skied there in April myself if things get a bit thread bare below you can ski on the Glacier.

I say Austria because the atosphere there when you are skiing is great and there is typically (IMHO) more to do at the Austrian resorts.

I have skied the 3 valleys in France in April to, we stayed at merribel Belvedere the appartment was great and we did have quite a dump of snow, but I wouldn't rate it as high next to the Austrian resorts i have visited.

hope this helps

cheers

And if you read the studies you'll see they include professional athletes across a number of disciplines and in all cases covered supervised regimes. The research proves increased injury risk and decreased performance in all cases, the suggestion this might only affect the general public is entirely unsupported by the data.

Talking with my physio' they question at what time this was ever any different, the recent research might contradict some folklore but it doesn't really say anything that wasn't known all along.

People like their little rituals and skiers are no exception, in fact they're rather worse than many. The desire to pose around at the top of lift proving how hardcore they are explains much of the desire to stretch in my opinion

Dude I have not read the research and wouldn't care to, I doubt many people other than you have, but I'll tell you something about studies and research for every on who says one thing there will be others who disagree. You can't always be right...

Further more I was speaking, if you read my post from my own experience, when I have done sports i have benefitted from stretching. I didn't say that that the general public wouldn't be able to manage it. I said that people who don't stretch regularly or are not flexible may find it a chore.

Also I have Never seen anyone stood at the top of a ski lift stretching, that Is likely to cause you an injury as your muscles are likely to be cold.

I have never stretched before or after skiing, although I do think that it would be a benefit. I am not a doctor, a physio or a sports therapist, but then I suspect neither are you. let people do what they do man we are neither of us experts so should not offer our opinions as fact.

I tell people that this is my opinion based on my experience
