For foot related reasons have been considering trying boarding; however the thought of becomming a novice again is rather off putting
How long should I expect ( i know there are many variables but am looking for a rough time frame)to take from beginner to confident on reds?

Could be as little as a few days, but everyone is different. Having skied will help. I rode the chair with a 56 year old guy on Monday. He had skied a bit many years ago, and was trying boarding because his wife started boarding a few years ago. It was his second day out. He was on the equivalent of a red, and getting down without falling. I gave him a few tips on a couple of chair rides, He was able to incorporate the changes within a few turns. He was a very fast learner. Other people take much longer to "get it". You really won't know until you have tried it. Maybe go to a snow dome, and just see if it feels right for you.
because I'm so inclined .....

How long did it take you to get to that stage on ski's?
I guess you can add on a bit for age & take off a bit for having snow craft.
Have you ever skate boarded?

Was on reds by second week ( very confident by end of 2nd week; although style may have been somewhat lacking) ; cheated a bit by wearing shorter ski's than recommended for my height
Also thought that blasting through crud & ice would be easier on a board as you haven't got two planks to keep in control!
