Whats better - taking a bus from Geneva to Courchevel or renting a car? How is the road condition. We will get Courchevel 1.1.2011 satarday - are the roads busy ?

Lets think ..... slow, stopping everywhere, noisy and smelly people, grumpy drivers, I think car hire sounds a good bet. :wink:

What Ian said. It will be very busy and at least with a hire car you can bail out of the jams, take a break, etc. Assumes youre happy driving in poor conditions, know how to fit chains (just in case) etc.

Hi - If you hire a car its worth spending a few minute checking the obvious works - I had a pretty miserable drive from Geneva to Val D (and back in a day - don't ask!) due to a fault with the windscreen washers which wasn't apparent until I hit the autoroute.
Also don't be tempted to cut through Geneva because the Sat Nav thinks it is best - took 2 hrs to get through - just head out on to the autoroute from the airport.
If you pick your car up from the Swiss side of the airport then it should have winter tyres and chains - Once I picked up from the French side - got upgraded to a nice VW People Carrier (with German plates so I guess was a one way rental leftover) but - it only had normal tyres on.

Personally I would go with a hire car - we tend to go through Annecy and along the lake picking up the Autoroute at Albertville - probably not particularly faster but its a nice run by the Lake and we tend to stop for a coffee and bite to eat near there. Also on way back we can stop at a hypermarket for all the nice French goodies.
It also means that if the snow is poor in Courchevel you can always hop in the car and drive to another resort.
If you do hire the French side - which tends to be cheaper to hire from - you will need either a vignette to travel up the Swiss motorway (and that may or may not be on the vehicle) or have to go out through the French sector (details are on the Geneva airport website - pm me if you are struggling to find them). Vignettes can be found on ebay - although I hear they are not legally transferable a friend of mine has been buying his Christmas vignette for about a fiver for years!
Swiss cars tend to come winterised - French need snow packs adding to the price. Hope that helps!
