Looks like I may get away this year, but only in December. I am not bothered about piste size, I can do the same slope over and over especially as it will be a new resort.
I have looked at Levi in Finland, but am a bit put off by the lack of daylight (5 hours a day).
Can anyone offer some first hand experience ?

What light there is, is reflected off the snow, so although it's dark most of the day, it's not deep deep dark. Get used to skiing by floodlight.

Clothing is really important with the temperatures down to around -30c, it might be worth hiring full body suits, and really really warm boots. Alpine spring skiing kit won't pass muster.

How's your cross country skiing? as that is more of a sport in Lapland than downhill. There are a great lot of activities away from the slopes and very different from the Alps - a fantastic experience. A sauna is obligatory (every day).

Take along sausages to grill on the fires they have at the bottom of the slopes and on the Cross-country trails.

Hi Wynford,

A bit late for you maybe but I've only just joined the forum! I've been to Yllas a couple of times and loved it! Where are you staying? We stayed in the Yllas Saaga hotel which is in a very quiet area, but has everything you need. There's quite a few hotels the other side of the slopes as well.

I loved it there as the hotel is slope side and for a novice skier as I was (still no expert!) the slopes were really good. Can be a bit chilly that time of the year though as I'm sure you're aware!! You can usually ski until 7pm and a lot of the slopes are floodlit.

If theres anything you'd like to know I'll do my best to answer!

Dan
