Go to Serre Che and stop in Briancon, its a Unesco world heritage centre to very pretty, has loads of shops and places to eat as its Frances highest town, and its linked into 250km of ski area which has fantastic slopes.
And not expensive for France either.

Thanks guys...
Tony - i knew you would suggest ADH.
I was really looking hard at Arc 1950, is does look nice but i was worried that it may be 'theme park like' just as peakmonster said. I love theme parks but wouldn't want to stay there!
Skied: Arinsal, La Plagne, Alpe D'huez, Flaine
Booked; Les Arcs
Skis : Atomic Blackeye TI's

Easy decision then. Avoid much of France if thats what you dont want.
ADH was a little different, and great ski variety, but I think SC is the best of France in terms of proper old villages and impressive ski area. Have a look in WTSS, Briancon has some cheap accommodation available to book, and you can drive it in 9 hours from Calais.

Not too sure about the nine hour travel time

How long do you reckon Wickers?
We have driven it, but it was quite a while ago, and I can't recall just how long it took.....

MMMmmm just checked mappy and it did say 9hr 44min, I seem to remember it took a lot longer, I guess the mappy timings does not allow for traffic, from Grenoble to the Alp d'huez and LDa seem to take an age and it was also slow going over the Le Grave pass.

My mum will always recommend Cervinia, because it doesn't have too many difficult scary slopes (she doesn't do black runs, despite skiing for 20 years!), and is a very pretty village.
On top of that, all the hotels are quite small, so you rarely get school parties staying, which means that during half term week (when I went 2 years ago), the pistes and lifts were still quiet!
For one year, it was worth swapping difficult black runs for wide empty pistes and no lift queues.
I second the recommendation for Serre Che above though, and defintiely stay in Briançon.
