The strongest reason to replace ski boots (other than upgrading for ability) is wear to the heels from walking around. This can cause alignment issues, and make the boot/binding interface sloppy. To prevent this, use cat tracks or similar.

Walk as little as possible

Trencher,
I'm pretty sure that when I bought my ski boots the technician in the shop said the heels were replaceable as long as I didn't let them wear down too much before I brought them in. And what are 'cat tracks'? Are they cheaper than replacement heels? I didn't ask how much the shop charges to replace them.

And - to answer FallingDown's question - I don't spend much at all on ski gear because the ski holidays themselves cost me so much money that I don't have any to spare.

My ski jacket cost something like £25 reduced from £75 in Millets, and my salopettes cost around £30 from TKMaxx. I don't wear any special thermals - just normal tight fitting cotton leggings and tops which seem to work fine and I've been using the same ones for about ten years.

I think my goggles cost me around £40 but it was ages ago so I can't really remember. And I hire my skis. The only thing that was very expensive was my boots which I bought a couple of years ago, and I think they cost around £450 including special insoles and about 3 hours checking my feet etc. to make sure they fitted okay. Oh yes, and after everyone on here went on about how terrible tube socks are I bought a few pairs of the expensive fitted socks. And my gloves are cheap as well, but perfectly adequate at keeping my hands dry and warm.

I wouldn't buy any more stuff for myself unless something fell to pieces. And my daughter wears old stuff as well - her jacket and trousers look quite 'cool' now they are so beaten up

Me too. And now you've gone blue/green as well

To ski you only need waterproof/windproof outer layers, inner layers, some gloves, a hat, goggles and ski boots. Its amazing how you can flower that list up and get yourself a shed load of gear.

I'll be interested to see how long I manage to keep my green jacket before getting bored with it. Its done 2 seasons already. Soooooo 2011.

Yes buy on on need or else you "follow the crowd" on the latest looks !!!!

I always "measure" my new skis and check at end of every year the camber and flex range of my skis! I also check the edges ( how much out ) ! Most of my skis stay with me 4-6 years since I wax them every ski day and tune them every ski day by hand!

I also check my clothing at end of year! I noticed my 5 year old Spyder Spring gloves are all worn at finger tips! Leather just worn !!! Too much Spring skiing!

I sit down and make a list of material I missed during year !

I never change due to style or "fashion" since I believe form follows "fashion" !

I know I need new socks since they are thin around heels!

My advise,,,,select quality material and get classic designs,,,,not latest looks which die after 2 years !

Boots,,,never never change once they fit you
Skis,,,,why change once you have the best! Just add to inventory !
Jackets,,,,,well if great deals come
etc,,,,,,,,
