I´m heading to San Anton in 2 weeks where I´ve read the rescue service uses the unfortunate skiers for training purposes, no matter the accessibility they always favour the HELICOPTER RESCUE.
I had been to Sölden in 2008(End of seasson) and not seen any Heli rescue frenzy.
I´m thinking about Columbus or Direct Travel ski insurance but Columbus doesn´t explicitly mention PHYSIOTHERAPY expenses whilst Direct Travel does.
On the other hand, Columbus(or UK only Complete Ski subsidiary)says:" Complete Ski's specialist winter sport travel insurance policies include helicopter recovery, mountain rescue and air ambulance as standard as well as comprehensive medical, equipment and cancellation cover"
Until I googled yesterday I had Direct Travel for years and good price.

I went to ZERMATT (FEB 2009) where all this scary fables (American skiers, it seems)about "beware, very difficult, etc..."come from and even on not very good conditions: foggy (hate it as I cannot see the depth) mildly windy and very cold,yet I managed to ski down the slopes. :)
Most of the Rothorn, Sunnega,Gornergrat Areas Reds are narrow and the resort was not crowded but "populated".
I am an Intermediate skier who can manage most Reds(even easy blacks in good wheather/snow conditions) .
Any clues about any Pre-CAUTION needed?
Best skiing areas for an "Experienced Intermediate" :shock:/in the Arlberg Area?
Rather skilft to Stüben and take the free Skibus to Zürs/Lech?

Sadly, I think that is true, Bandit. I bet they know a lot about statistics and charts though.
Yes, I do believe that the bean counters are now in charge under the new regime.I know that you have been with them for some years Dave,however we now lack confidence in them, especially for recovery. We have Air-Glaciers cards in addition, and would use those 1st in case of need, just in case DT want to have a meeting 1st to discuss the "reasonableness" of the local recovery strategy.
Also of concern is their policy of refusing all claims associated with an incident, if they don't approve the initial cover even if they are not paying for it.

The policy is okay, if you never go off piste, and are holidaying wholly in a resort environment. I believe that skilled skiers should not be fooled by the list of included activities in the policy, and study the small print until their eyes water!

I currently have a Direct-Travel Annual Premier Policy. On Page 17 in the Policy Booklet, under Medical Emergency, repatriation and Associated expenses Section 2, Para 1 a) iv) reasonable search, mountain rescue and other costs to transport you to a hospital by land sea or air, using an air or road ambulance if necessary...
I think that means yes.....but the key word here is "reasonable"

I have had some recent dialogue with this company, and I'm sorry to report that they (and their underwriters) don't seem to have much idea about what skiers do. They are under new ownership.

I concur with Bandit, as I have a single trip Direct-Travel Premier policy for my trip 6th Feb and that was my understanding too, but seems I might be wrong.

I have used DT annual insurance for 4/5 years. I made one claim, and they paid without asking for any proof.
In Tirol, any head or back injury, or heart condition, and they call in the hubschrauber. In our area, all such injuries are taken to Kufstein.
One such incident that involved a friend's wife, off piste in Niederau, and out of the designated ski area The claim did take some time to resolve, but the insurers paid.
In another case, last week, also in Niederau, the helicopter was trying to access a deep gorge, surrounded by trees. After tryiing to fly down between the trees, the H/C aborted, flew to worgl to get a rope extension, and back again. As you can imagine, the cost for this may be high, and reasonable.
I think that the use of the term "reasonable" is there to protect the insurers from abuse.
Although St Anton is in Tirol, but packaged with the high cost Arlberg, I would guess that H/C rescue costs would be controlled from Innsbruck.
