New Apple Patented Technology Could See Automatically Enforced Speed Limits On Ski Runs

New patents granted to the Apple Corporation in North America last week include several that have implications for recreational winter sports men and women, as well as professional.

One clever new piece of kits allows for wireless heart rate monitoring and notification to resort medical crews if a skier goes in to cardiac arrest or has other medical events on the slopes.

Another will allow for smart lift tickets to be published that include GPS technology and allow for the live tracking of all ticket holders on the mountain, including the speeds at which they are travelling.

One resulting application of the technology would allow resorts to set speed limits on all or some pistes and to know who transgressors are and fine them are confiscate lift tickets, without needing them, to be seen and physically tracked down by ski patrollers.

It is not clear if the technology will advise skiers how fast they are moving to enable them to avoid breaking speed limits.

Am I alone in feeling some discomfort at the intrusion this technology will make into my life.
Where you ski, what you ski, where you stopped, when you went to the loo etc

Imagine, charging a really steep bump field, being completely wasted at the bottom, and being met by a medical team who have decided that your heart rate is too high.

Hillfrogs, being reprimanded as the monitoring equipment shows that they sat down in the middle of a slope for too long......

If this makes it's way to Europe, I shall be skinning up more often I reckon.

I would feel a bit more than 'some discomfort'

And as for the speed limits, how exactly is the skier supposed to know how fast he or she is travelling? You could not, for example, legally enforce speed limits for cars if they had no speedometer or other way of notifying the driver of the speed. I hope this is one of those 'only in the USA' type things

That won't work, they would put an auto-stop on the pass if they didn't receive the signal. Damn.

You could give your pass to a slower skier, but then you would have to wait at the bottom to get the pass back.

You could buy two lift passes, and....... Ah-ha, so that's why they are introducing this gizmo.

Agreed, this is IN TRUE AMERICAN STYLE taking things one step too far as usual.
Whilst I like the idea of being able to monitor how many miles I covered, what vertical I did etc, the idea of repremanding people for how they have skied offends me. As Bandit said, I like to ski where I want how I want.

As for skinning up, I didnt realise you were into that s**t Bandit.....?
