I'm not sure I agree Ian, especially when a posting is clearly innoffensive. I know that Trencher, TonyH and myself have been downstarred on a number of occasions, and there may well be others.

I don't think it does any harm to highlight idiocy now and again. If it makes the culprits see some sense, well and good.

Ah well, the sun is up, we have fresh snow, gotta think about making tracks.

Dave, this has been going on for has long as I have been posting, I am not surprised you disagree by highlighting idiocy you give the person a reason to continue, only an opinion.
Well,
While we're highlighting this issue, what's wrong with what I said here? I was just trying to be nice to GadgetGirl. And I do think that the issue of ski-ing while pregnant is a very important one, worthy in fact of a whole thread on its own. I mean, we discuss the difficulties involved in ski-ing after a fracture, for example, so what's the difference?

I admit the bit about our dairy herd was a bit wibbly (which was why I flagged it so people could miss it out if they wanted), but it was only a couple of lines, and I haven't had a ski-ing accident whilst I was pregnant to illustrate my point.

If you're reading this, GadgetGirl, I hope you had a great holiday, and you're still needing childcare for next year's ski holiday

I would be more comfortable myself, if they just got rid of the star system altogether. If anyone disagrees with someone's post, on a technical issue for example, they can simply write a reply themselves politely pointing out where and why they disagree with it. And if someone writes a really offensive post we can complain to Admin about it, who can then remove it. If we think a post is really great - helpful, well written, informative etc. then we can write a reply saying so.

I agree Ally why do people worry about stars I really don't need my ego massaged to tell me I am a wonderful poster , , why do people take offence at people's opinions ???
I have not seen too many offensive postings on this site just a lot of ego's.
Its just coming out of summer in New Zealand so here i am checking out what you guys are up t n the other side of the world
It's not the actual rating that ticks me off, but that I am genuinely interested to hear another view, or a different understanding of something. The star system lets one disagree without providing a reason. I can see that it works to highlight something that is not appropriate, or something that is especially well liked. It's when it is used as a counter view, with no need offer an explanation, that it's a little frustrating.

Oh well

Trencher
because I'm so inclined .....

You definately need a sense of humour here
because I'm so inclined .....

Either that or there really are some stupid t**** about.
A couple of things here:

1. People really shouldnt get too hung up about the ratings
2. The person going around one starring posts has clearly had a sense of humour bypass
3. We are wasting a lot of thread time discussing this
4. I have been one starred on several times, usually by a certain person who no longer posts on here, because they don't like my opinions, which is a little sad. If I came on here and said "Skiing is for losers and you are all imbeciles" I would expect to get one star.
5. I get the impression that some people rate one star to people who post stuff they simply don't like or agree with, not because it is incorrect.

I would like to suggest a new system to our Admin man:

Get rid of the rating system, so people cannot rate any more, and introduce a rating based on the number of posts you make.
Someone who posts rarely would therefore be a beginners, whereas someone who has posted 2500 times for example would be a black run skier, etc etc.

I think other websites use something similar?
Tony, I can't quite see the benefit of having a rating system based on the number of posts made

It assigns a value to volume not quality
