Jasper Canada

Anyone been to Jasper. I'm going for 2 weeks in Jan.

I went there about 10 years ago for my Honeymoon. Did a two centre with Lake Louise. Stayed at the Jasper Park lodge which is just outside the town. I really liked the town, it has a sort of wild west feeling. The ski area is Marmot basin which is outside the town of Jasper but most Hotels have buses to it or you need a hire car. The ski resort is well organised. The Car parks are along the edge of the ski slopes so you can park the car and then ski down. When we were there Jasper / Marmot Basin was renowned for power cuts hopefully this has been fixed over the years. Let me know if I can give you anymore imformation..

Never skied there but have visited on a day trip from Banff (amazing journey - a must do).
Nice Town, slopes looked nice but I think you will be bored for 2 weeks and it isn't exactly adjacent to any other ski areas, in fact slopes aren't exactly adjacent to Jasper (but neither are Banff's) nearest resort is Lake Louise and that is about 3 hours by car.
In January I would recommend taking plenty of thermal wear it is unlikely to get above sub zero and can be minus 20deg.

What do you want to know specifically: terrain, accommodation, food. snow, weather,.....?

Let me know and I'll find the answers. I'm there this weekend and the weekend after that. I then have a break and back for the middle of February for the school break for 10 days. The rest of the season is a by- monthly weekend trips to sum up to about 25 or 30 days a season.

The conditions are good with snow to the top of the mountain. I skied twice before Christmas and skied 10 cms fresh snow on good cover even on the steeps that usually have rocks. THe neat thing about pre Christmas is the lack of people not the lack of snow.

It's about four hours by car from my home. On that subject are you renting a car? Travel in the west of Canada can be hard by train and bus.

If any of you can give ne any info i would appreciate it , I am booked for 2 weeks in Feb/March as a first timeer to Jasper/Canada i have always done europe for my skiing before but thought i would try some thing further afield,

Hi,

Compared to Banff, Jasper is quieter and has a more secluded and remote feel to it. There is only realy one skiing resort option nearby, which is Marmot Basin, owned by the same company who own Sunshine Village near Banff. It is a 10 - 20 min ride out of town and has some decent skiing (lots of gladed runs if I remember correctly).

It is well worth hiring a decent car and driving the icefields parkway one day. Probably one of the most spectacular drives in the world. At that time of the year, the parkway will be deserted, so be carefull and watch the weather. It is a 3-4 hr drive to Lake Louise at the southern end with no gas stations open in-between.

Be aware that there is a good handfull of decent places to eat and drink in Jasper. However, the nightlife is very low key. The drive to the west of Jasper towards Mt Robson (Canada's highest) is also spectacular.
