Andy, you've totally lost me there

All I know is that, like Snapzzz, I'm feeling fat and unfit. But I'm going to start by walking. I think running would be totally beyond me at the moment

Fortunately I have several months to get fit before ski-ing

Andy, I think that would be a very good idea. How do you get 8 different levels?

Well there were 7 originally and then, after feedback, another was added making eight.

Simples.

All clear now??

For me, it's an age thing. I could eat and drink what I liked as a teenager and in my 20's. ie a tub of Haagen Dazs or a whole packet of hobnobs as a 'snack' in the evening. Not an ounce of weight gain.

I started to notice a "softening" around the waist in my early 30's. This coincided with the arrival of babies, more responsibility at work and a lack of time to keep fit. I was probably the most unfit I have ever been by the time I got to about 35.

Latterly (last 5 years or so), I've worked very hard to maintain my fitness levels. Sadly this has meant a big reduction in snacking on chocolate/biscuits/crisps, radically cutting down on alcohol consumption , and, most weeks, doing 3 or 4 fitness activities. This includes mountain biking, indoor static biking, indoor rowing, a gym visit each week and, of course, some Ashtanga yoga.

I think it's best to maintain a steady regime rather than specially try to get fit at a certain point in the year or go on a particular diet. I'm now nearer 50 (just!) than 40 and, touch wood, feeling pretty fit and healthy.

I as a builder have always been ok in the fitness dept due to physical hard graft, having said that I do use a stepper for 2 months before I go skiing. At the age I am now I do have to stop for a breather a few times when going down a slope & rest the legs for a minute or two, to my mind skiing is recreational & not out to be the fastest or long distance runner, that's for others with their mindset.

So, how much exercise have you put in today then snapzzz?

You need to get stuck in. With your new fancy bright coloured jacket and pants you don't want to look like a teletubby on your first day in La Plagne in December......
