If people want to wear helmets that is their choice. But for me it is a no-no, unless perhaps skiing in a couloir. Of course I am leaving myself open to scorn should I ever get a head injury but I have no intention of changing my choice.

I would like to hear from any other peeps who have also decided to remain helmetless and why they did so.

Why take the risk?

Oh my god, the old helmet debate once again.

Right.....I am all for personal choice, in fact for years I mocked "lidders" mainly because many of them told me I was wrong not wearing one but also because I thought a lot of them looked stupid.
However, people choose to wear a helmet because of the risk. I always said it was my choice not to wear one, and championed the wearing of bobble hats.

Anyone who wants to wear a hat and not a helmet, thats fine by me.

Then last year I watched a movie that changed my whole outlook on the issue, and I went out and bought a helmet. Not because I felt at risk or because I thought I was going to get hurt, but because I felt it disrespectful to those who had by not wearing one. I have to say after 1 week of wearing it, I didnt find it comfortable or enjoyable to wear, and I was conscious of it all the time. But I will get used to it.

I do however have a problem with anyone who says doing one or the other is wrong. I always respected those who chose to wear a lid, but please dont go around telling me or anyone else what they should do. Its a personal choice. And lets face it, 90% at least of skiers are now wearing lids anyway.

Thanks for you input Buntycake and Tony H.

Buntycake, you say why take the risk and I say why ski? I don't know this for a fact but I would think you have more chance of getting a head injury crossing the road but you don't wear a helmet for that. But listen, I don't want to get into whether you should or shouldn't, my question was asking to hear from people who don't wear a helmet and why they have bucked the trend.

Tony H, this is not intended to be "oh my God, the old helmet debate once again", if you read my original post again you will hopefully realise that. I am not interested in debating it because it is people's choice I just want to hear why people decided not to wear one. However, it is interesting to hear why you have gone over to the far side due to it being disrespectful to other users, can you explain more please?

Ha, ha, well done Ian Wikham. We all know it is freedom of choice but why did you decide not to wear one?

I am not anti helmets but I have never ever been one to jump on the band wagon, it all started with Natasha Richardson's unfortunate death in Tremblant ... Big publicity followed after that, it is just a shame I did not have shares in a helmet company ..... Never worn one since I started skiing and don't feel the need to change that.
