We are going 8th March. Have never been this late before, so forgive me if this seems a stupid question. How different is skiing in spring to freezing conditions in January we are accustomed to? Are we going to need normal ski jacket/ fleeces etc. I have heard people say they've skied in t-shirts. The forecast keeps changing so can't really get an idea of temperature yet. don't want to the expense of buying a lighter weight jacket if it's not necessary. Flying with Austrian airlines so only get a 18kg luggage allowance so will struggle to fit everything in.

My favourite time to ski is the first two weeks of March. But in the last five years, we've only had one 'spring' week! The other trips have coincided with heavy snow, blizzards and white-outs that were more deep winter than spring. Very difficult to predict, really. And obviously the higher you ski, the colder it will be. Perhaps layers, that can be added and discarded as appropriate, are the answer.

Last week, in springlike conditions, I skied in just my base layer top and ski jacket, and was warm enough. It was unusually warm for the time of year, according to the locals.

I would say re-waterproof your jacket and ski trousers. I was ski-ing in Tignes last year at the beginning of March and it was raining, even up at Val Claret!
And I would agree that the weather can be very variable. Another time I was ski-ing at Tignes in April and there was masses of fresh powder!

Depends where you are going I guess, or at what altitude, but this in my opinion is the absolute best week of the season to ski. However, it is no less predictable than any other week. A tad warmer possibly? Check the forecast right up until the last minute would be my advice and pack accordingly.

Ha, I have just re-checked your PM from last week ~ of course I know where you are going!

It's kind of good news. Sunny every day, first four days, daytime temps 15 to 16 degrees, so a light jacket. Best skiing will be until 1.00pm. Then time to sit outside the Kropfraderalm, and commune with nature.

Say hi to Gill from me!
